Since the point of the padding files is to "shift" the start of each separate file to the beginning of a new "block", it most certainly DOES affect the CRC encoding: the contents of the blocks - even the NUMBER of blocks - is altered.

Let's use a simple example - say I have 3 files, each exactly 1kb in length, and let's suppose our .torrent file has been coded to use 4kb blocks.

• without padding, the FIRST 4kb block would contain ALL THREE FILES - so, no matter what you "selected", you would have to download all 3 files. 1 block total though (and it would be a "short block": only 3kb of the max 4kb block size).
• WITH padding, you would have to download 3 separate 4kb blocks ... 12kb in total, for data that is truly only 3kb in size! (Actually, you would download 3 blocks, but the last one would NOT have any padding - it would be a "short block", with only the 1kb of data - that last block, and ONLY the last block, is allowed to be (expected to be) "short"... so, in FACT, you would download 9kb of data (4k+4k+1k)).

Thus, using padding is a decent idea when you have a torrent with lots of MOVIES (large files), but it is much less so when you have a collection of short (picture) files. In fact, a collection of 1000's of pictures would be absurdly large if used with padding...

Just some thoughts....

There is a concept here that @F46660T seems to be clinging to that I feel is worth addressing: ownership

As I alluded to above, there IS NO ownership here. When you upload a torrent, you are agreeing to share it! Once shared, what those people do with it is up to them! They can re-share it on other sites, they can masturbate to it until their penis falls off, they can delete it as a mistaken download... all their own purview!

As I read through @F46660T 's rantings, I get the notion that he expected that the deletion of his account would also delete all of the torrents he uploaded (I don't know, maybe he even thought it would delete all of the torrents he DOWNLOADED too?) Anyway, that doesn't happen. Once a torrent becomes active on the site, it generally remains active so long as someone actively seeds it. "Ownership" ends as soon as the first leecher completes the first successful snatch and becomes a seeder! It is then "community property" as-it-were.

For the record, some torrents live and die (definition of a dead torrent: 0 seeders, 0 leechers) within weeks (even days!), others seem to go on forever! There are some torrents (live torrents!) on here that date from the 2006 re-boot of the site! It all depends on the tastes and desires of the user community!

Pardon me for having a sleep/work schedule that is not in-line with your expectations. My, but you ARE a self-entitled one, aren't you!

Just a suggestion: we're all volunteers here, give us 24-hours to respond, not 1-hour! Unless, of course, you don't mind paying $50/mo or so for access to the site so that we can PAY for support staff 24/7?

As for taking legal action, go for it. The first thing the lawyers are going to want to know is whether your activities are legal in the jurisdictions of yourself and of the site... good luck learning where that is, and they're probably NOT legal in your own jurisdiction... so yeah, that ain't gonna work.

Just an aside - to provide a level-set here:

We are ALL - staffers & users alike - GUESTS here. Our access - at whatever levels that may be - is granted solely at the site owner's discretion, and can be revoked at the slightest of whims, at any time, for any reason.

BTW: You agreed to these terms when you signed up....

I am not the staffer you asked for, but I want to make a few things clear:

• Padding is not useless - it is used in "collections" (torrents with multiple files) to aid users who want to download only PORTIONS of the torrent.

• Padding (in clients that recognize it for what it is) does not inflate download size. Clients that properly recognize the padding won't actually download the "pad" data. ALSO: when done right, the PAD data is all-zeros... so that when compressed, it has almost no content at all.
• When uploaders supply a torrent to the site, the site DOES validate the torrent - so what you're asking might be possible programmatically, but with so many other things being worked on right now, it might not make it to the "high-priority" list.

So, what's a boy to do?
Well, one of the torrent clients that DOES handle padding properly is qBitTorrent. Also, there is absolutely no reason you can't have TWO torrent clients installed on your system... when your older-but-favored client chokes on a torrent due to padding, use the qBitTorrent client for that torrent, then go back to your normal life.

To be a duplicate (which would warrant the removal of your upload), the existing torrent must still be "live".

As a staffer, it is not uncommon for us to encounter a "Dupe Report" where the original torrent is dead. In those instances, the dead torrent is removed (deleted), and the new torrent is left alone. (For What Its Worth: the reporter does NOT get SBP awarded for finding these instances.)

In this case, I suggest you upload your torrent. If you REALLY want to be safe, reference the old torrent in your description and mention that it was dead on the date you uploaded yours!

The long story-short of which is that, with qBitTorrent, you need to get around the scrape issue @Pawpcorn described above by telling qBitTorrent to re-check your torrents after completing them. That way, the torrent client stops seeding to check the torrent, then starts seeding again when it completes that task (with a re-announce and not a scrape).

Or, you could follow the instructions of @Pawpcorn above and use the older uTorrent client...
