And making visible staff rating on the torrent's page does make sense, since it shows the rating of the torrent, not of the video inside. I like the current rating system. Lets keep it and think of a way to get people to use it more often, whether we make use ballard1's idea or not.

I was thinking that the difference between a good download page and a bad one is pretty darn obvious, and the majority of users here know the difference.  My guess is that in most cases a poor torrent page just comes down to laziness, I bet that's the case more often than not. A simple 2 pic guide can work too if people really don't get it and need us to instruct them (lol).
Adding incentive to build more attractive torrent pages is a good idea though and I'm all for it.
What do you think about adding a simple line "Download Page Reputation Points" (or something like that) and of course show the points earned. The words "Reputation Points" can link to the FAQ or forum thread we develop later explaining it all. As with the Seed Bonus points being visible on the torrent search page, "Rep Points" can be visible too. Just a suggestion. This way there wouldn't be 2 sets of stars anywhere in the torrent section. I don't know if that would confuse anyone or not…wait, after working the helpdesk for so long, it doesn't seem so far fetched. :)...

I don't think two rating systems is a good idea. The current one is broken. Too many people give bad ratings without even having seen the video or based on personal taste.
On the other hand: maybe it's possible that only people who actually have downloaded a video can rate? That would make a lot of sense. That would minimize the abuse of the rating system.

Maybe I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the "staff rating" wouldn't be visible and is only used to award/rate the uploaders download page.

I like the idea of only allowing people who've downloaded the torrent to rate it. I agree, of course that would make more sense.

At the moment the only technical way we got as moderators to punish and avoid jump-on during initial upload seeding would be to reset the passkey. That will stop the seeding after one hour latest, but as well all other seeding and downloading. I feel that being a little disproportional. There is the possibility to give a system warning if a moderator PM request is ignored (that fits to our set of rules), but such action is rather symbolic.

Some people might not login in time to respond to the PM request but would be happy to comply if they did (e.g. on vacation, at work, illness, etc).

Personally I wouldn't, and will not,  punish anyone for seeding.

I agree.  Didn't check if I posted in that particular thread. I remember making some posts on this topic somewhere tho. Some slowliners who know how to manage their torrents get by just fine and are even Power Users, it's all about torrent management.

Maybe I don't get it :), but it wouldn't make sense to me if the staff rating was visible to users since we don't know anything about the actual video or whatever file. All we know is what's on the download page.

Well, I can't imagine how else would a user acquire that many points, unless he uploads a torrent and waits for 500 Thank You's

Oh, I see now (hehe, posting at bedtime doesn't always work out :)), I think… ONLY 5 star torrents get 50 rep points and all the other rep points are earned 1 point at a time?    Or how many for an upload?

If a user is too f**king dense to upload a torrent themselves then you better believe I will side with an uploader EVERY TIME! Seeding is great  but when it is at the expense of an uploader who cannot even get complete credit for HIS UPLOAD then I have a real problem with that.

In the "thieves" mind he might just be thinking about helping get the torrent out faster so everyone doesn't get blue balls downloading at 2kB for example. Me, I like those people. Lazy, maybe some, but there's also people who are trying to help. Of course they can upload if they can reseed. Whenever I uploaded it was only because I wanted to put a torrent here, and I appreciated everyone who jumped on my torrent to help out. Why should everyone suffer a slow download just because someone doesn't know how to manage their ratio and wants all he can get out of his upload, or is a ratio whore and only wants more more more to inflate their ratio? It's about sharing files, not how high you can inflate your ratio. I care more about receiving Thank You's or some nice torrent comments and knowing people enjoyed my upload. Ratio? I'll earn it by seeding some torrents and not being download happy. Everyone who has a slow connection needs to know how to manage their torrents and ratio a little better than fastliners. Uploaders should get some SBP just for uploading. Maybe 50 SBP (?). That'll help ease this. [/off-topic]

Why not 2 rating systems? Keep the current one and have a staff rating system. This way each rating system can be used for their intended purpose, and Auto Approval users can benefit from the new rating system too. Staff can rate a torrent on it's download page rather than the approval list.

Granting, of course, will still be done by the staff and will require other factors, but at least this will give the user a sort of aim to reach if they want to become Auto Approval users. I don't think that would be a reliable indicator. While we can subtract points when we have to send out a message asking the user to fix something, stop seeding/leeching too many torrents, start seeding, etc, a user would be able to easily reach 500 via the other avenues rep points can be gained. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but it seems users can even easily surpass 500 without uploading 10 clean torrents. ???

Several VPNs do work with torrents.  Read what they offer and the privacy statements.
As amice said, be sure that you set µTorrent to use the VPN.

Some VPNs offer dedicated IPs too, no sharing the external IP. That will get you around the 5 connections from 1 IP limit on the tracker, that is, if you ever encounter that problem -I doubt you will.

There is an old problem with the "Max entries" setting and selecting [all], don't do it.
Browsers don't like all that.

Use one of the other options or edit the url to receive a little more feeds than 100 if you'd like.

Some users don't finish seeding their torrents, or don't seed straight on through at least until they've distributed 3-4 copies.
Jumping on such torrents ensures their availability. Just another example of where jumping on a torrent can help.
Of course no one can predict what the uploader will do.

I think that the people who jump on torrents mean well in most cases.

I'd like to see evidence that this is some sort of crisis before we work on making more rules. We have plenty enough rules already.
I'm not against forming a guideline or rule for this if there is a true need for it.

IMO people who jump on torrents help everyone out way more often than they hurt an uploader, and I have my doubts as to how often uploaders are really hurt by people jumping on their torrent.

I'd like to have time to be here more, for months I haven't been able to. There were times where I haven't been here in over a month. My BF had some serious health problems (and still has some), it's busy season on my real job, and I had some nasty problems at work too. I hope to be here regularly again soon. Well it's sure that having an avg upload speed of 214Kb/s (as shown under your avatar in the left column, also it's probably a bit greater while you upload a fresh torrent) can't compare to my 28Kb/s maximum (same for MrMazda I guess, and many others)

So "turtle speed" is sure very relative, depending on each user's avg ul/dl speeds.
That's why each user should know what is the maximum size of any fresh torrent he should be allowed to upload, so other users won't have to wait indefinitely. I remember having asked this to a Mod who told me 1Gb should be my max (i.e 28Kb/s => 100Mb/h => 1Gb/10h)

And in fact I stick to this rule : if you search for "blackdid" (unquoted) in the torrent search window, sorted by torrent size descending, I never uploaded anything bigger than 600Mb in my 31 uploads…because I don't want downloaders to wait too long before they got a full copy of the torrent.

I remember too that a new discussion in another topic showed that Uwe, Mgr etc... hadn't a problem while waiting many hours / days during a single download, in case they wanted the torrent really bad ("torrent = patience" they said lol)

So it's a real difficult question , but if guys who have a "slow" upload connection (like mine, constant 28Kb/s) know that they shouldn't upload BIG torrents of 2 or 3GB (not talking about full DVD's) then there's no reason for us to accept that a "jump on" seeder appears too early (i.e. until 3-4 leechers snatched my fresh torrent) , not talking about all the torrent preparation done by the original uploader.

Your upload speed isn't as slow as what I had in mind for a turtle…or crippled turtle. I was thinking about people who upload at -2kB to 5kB max.
In that situation I think leechers would love people jumping on the torrent to help them out (file sharing isn't ALL about the uploader ;)).

I don't agree with you having any upload restrictions being placed on you concerning the file size. It would be OK if you uploaded much larger files such as full DVD for example, or even a site rip of several GB. Getting stuff slowly, eventually, one day, is better than never at all.

Seriously tho, I don't agree with that, and there is no rule or guideline even. Most of all, it doesn't make sense. Anyone can upload what they want size-wise (as long as no rules are broken such as the collection rules), and leechers can be patient and hope other seeders join in if it's slow going.

IMO the programming part wouldn't be beneficial overall for the reasons I've already given throughout my posts. It would hurt the community while maybe helping only a few.

They deserve more than a £500,000 fine, a class action lawsuit would go nicely with the fine.

It is bad practice to cut in front of people who are trying to fix their ratio, I agree. I don't think this should be added to the rules tho.

What if the uploader already has a decent enough ratio and someone jumped on the torrent who has a very poor ratio and is trying to repair it?

I'd prefer to develop a guideline rather than enforce a rule.

No need to wait IMO. Odds are it's bound to happen anyhow, and the majority time the "original" uploader got it from somewhere else himself instead of ripping it. People should upload here first anyways, right? ;D

I don't think she would come out if she's Lesbian or Bi, at least not while she has plans to continue her show.

That sad fact is, her show would most likely be boycotted by droves of nuts so her ratings would plummet. The audience she attracts is primarily family orientated, and we all know what "Family Values" means to most people. It usually goes hand in hand with being anti-gay.

I haven't had a smoke in 2.5 months now. At my peak I was a pack a day smoker.

Nicotine lozenges helped me quit using my own quitting program. I went as long as I could stand without a lozenge, then eventually stopped them completely when I only "needed" 1 a day.

The directions on those lozenges appear to be designed to get people addicted to them :-, at least it seems like that to me.
