To note: This is my personal view and not a GayTorrent.ru official view.
The opening topic got two aspects:
First, banning torrents for low definition video content. Similar to cannonmc, I think that would make many classic and vintage movies unavailable. Something which should be avoided.
What disturbs me more than classic or vintage low definition tape to digital file transfers, where I know as a collector not to get DVD quality, are uploads of recent HD productions in low (and macro blocked) definition from tube site downloads!
Second, to make it mandatory to indicate the definition in the description. Here personally I'd like to get the definition indicate. However, seeing the difficulties to get better descriptions on uploads made on moderators requests by the uploaders, trying to get them added after upload seems fruitless efforts. Deleting uploads without the information isn't an option either.
Then GayTorrent.ru tries to encourage sharing. This starts from the minimum share ratio requirements, the additional daily .torrent file permissions for uploads, the bonus points attributed to the uploader when voting additional categories for his torrents to the huge bonus points award for getting successfully through the difficulties of uploading a first own torrent.
Making strict mandatory minimum description would only be contra productive. For example common movie consumers don't know (to use) MediaInfo to reveal information about definition, codec and profile, bit and frame rates. Those users, which I believe are the majority of members here, will then be excluded from sharing own torrent's content.
Therefore I work rather into the direction of description guidelines (i.e. not mandatory rules), giving to uploaders a framework of what should be done. Our upload guide gives already quite a number of hints:
5. TheTorrent Name should be given a title that reflects the content of the torrent. This might include title, studio, actors, movie number, format and/or resolution. The title inserted here will appear in the Browse Page and on the top of the torrent's description page. Themed Movie torrent names should contain the title and the production year in parentheses ( ). If you are uploading a collection, please follow upload collection rules to clearly define the theme and the degree of completeness.
Note: Do not use comment expressions in the title, such as "hot" or "must see."
and
8. Description: Please provide as much information as possible about the torrent's data files and their content.
Title & Studio
Cast
Release Date or Year
Runtime (e.g., 01:19:01)
Content synopsis - self made or search the internet to find something
Technical Information about Video File(s): Resolution (720p), Codec (.MP4, .AVI, .MKV, etc. . )
For Gay Themed Movies & TV Episodes, indicate the spoken and subtitle languages
For Collections, list the files included as "File List"
Search Tags to better define genres of special interest: ~comedy , ~dildo, ~gloryhole, ~smoker, ~tatoos, ~outdoors, ~huge dicks
Personal comments or seed bonus point requests should be added at the bottom, after the main information above.
Note: Given our international membership, GayTorrent.ru makes an effort to support multiple languages. Please at least contain some English so all members may understand the general content of your upload.
(Remark: the term resolution is wrong, it is Definition for the given example and same for Codec, it is Format (digital file container format) for the given examples. Something to be corrected.)
This is a recurrent request and there are continued internal discussions of what can be done to improve the situation, without the negative effects to the sharing of (gay) culture and knowledge. Some ideas are:
- Adding field to the upload form and QTM, so that have a better probability the uploader adds the information
- User contribution to descriptions to improve them with point rewards, quite similar to additional picture upload. Already today members having downloaded the torrent's content files can give additional information by making comments
Unfortunately, in difference to tube sites, we don't have the movie files and therefore can't automatically inspect the movie files to reveal the technical information.
My personal conclusion is that for the near future we have to life with the status quo.
