    • RE: New user inquiry on seeding and when to delete seeded torrents

      @dggalindez:

      Hi! As a very new uploader, I have already uploaded files here. I wanna when to continue seeding and when to stop seeding torrents that have been uploaded already.

      Any comments or replies are very much appreciated.

      Thanks!

      Hi, and welcome to the world of uploading.  Other members here appreciate what you're sharing.

      The uploading rules say that we should continue seeding a torrent until "three or four" people have downloaded it.  Depending on the size of the torrent, your connection speed, and other mysterious factors, that could happen in less than an hour.  I consider the following factors when deciding how long to keep seeding:
      Is it seeded enough that other people will be able to download it?  While the rules say to keep seeding until three or four users have the material, those users could stop seeding, and the torrent would die if I'm not there.  I tend to keep seeding for at least a week or so to make sure that somebody's there to seed the material.

      How many users are leeching the material?  If there are still several people downloading through my torrent, I keep the torrent active so they can get the files, and I can get some upload credit.  If the number of leechers falls to zero (which happens to almost every torrent after a month or so), and it stays at zero for a long time, then nobody wants the material and there's no need to keep seeding it.

      Do I need to free up space on my computer?  If I'm running low on space, I might delete a torrent sooner (but only after three or four users have it).  If I have plenty of space, it doesn't hurt to keep seeding.
      Am I proud of my torrent upload?  This is vanity…but if I really like my torrent, perhaps because it's my own rip of a DVD, or because of my carefully chosen screen shots, or because the description I wrote is worthy of a Nobel prize for literature, I will probably keep seeding the torrent longer.  This doesn't hurt anyone.

      Ultimately you will figure out what works for you, but perhaps these things will help you decide.  I didn't mean to write a novel, but with cornoavirus quarantine, it's not like I have lots of places to go.  Thanks again for your uploads.

      That's what treason is… just FYI

      No.  Read the legal definition.

      As a point of order, treason as a federal offence in the US can be defined in one of two ways:

      US Constitution Art. 3, Sect. 3:

      Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.

      United States Code 18 USC 115:2831

      Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason.

      If someone is said to have committed treason, then one of these situations would need to apply.  The prevailing interpretation is that "enemy" refers to an entity against which a war is declared.  This has not been the case in the US since August 1945.

    • RE: Republican-Led Senate Panel Details Ties Between 2016 Trump Campaign and Russia

      @ManHandler:

      There was no collusion with Trump and Russia. You guys had your chance and for over two years you wasted millions of dollars investigating Trump on information that they now admit was a total lie. Clinesmith is the first domino to fall. He ADMITTED that they lied. Let it go. There's nothing there. The only collusion was Hillary and the DNC paying Russian agents for a fake dossier to interfere in the election. It was the DNC that interfered, and that's the only fact in the case. I don't care if you like Trump or not, the Democrats literally and factually committed TREASON. Sore losers need to talk about their plan rather than just Orange Man Bad all the time. You aren't swaying ANYONE with rehashed false crap.

      Productive forum comments stick to issues and facts.  References to other people suggest that the only tactic one has is name-calling, and that's rarely persuasive.

      As for facts…it is helpful to know the definition of the word "treason" before using it.

      Trudeau is going to have to build a wall to protect Canada's southern border and make the U.S. pay for it!

      Snow is a great construction material, and we have lots of it.  Also, you have to admit that Mr Trudeau is easier on the eyes than some other world leaders.

      …a mixture of ideologies aligned with white supremacists, neo-Nazis and anarchists. They share the same dislike of government and the police...

      It would be tragic if this disease spread from our southern neighbour.  There's overlap/underlap with Trump-style neo-fascism:  Both promote white supremacy, but while the militia folk are anti-police, Mr Trump styles himself as pro-police…due to his misunderstanding of some who use the phrase "defund the police."

      I don't think Mr Trump will be pro-police when they come to arrest him after he leaves office this coming January.

      @raphjd:

      Leftist media claiming Russian collusion.

      It's important to distinguish between "interference" and "collusion."  All of the US intelligence agencies have evidence that Russian entities interfered with the 2016 election in the US.  The Mueller investigation, and the cited article, say that there isn't sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Mr Trump for actively conspiring with the interfering Russian entities.

      Sarah Jeong isn't a racist according to the NYT.

      How is that relevant to this topic?

      @raphjd:

      I can't read the article without creating an account.   Supposedly you only get 1 article a wee without an account.

      If you leave the NYTimes site and then delete any cookies from NYTimes.com, it puts the article counter back to zero and you'll be able to read another piece.

      Anyway, as we have seen over the last 4 years is activist liberal judges such as the ones who claimed that non-citizens outside the US have US constitutional protections.

      Umm, that doesn't have anything to do with the OP's topic, which regarded rights of transgender people.

    • RE: Seeding a torrent that has no demand

      Hi–

      First off, it's very refreshing to hear questions about "how am I a good contributor to the site?" rather than "how can I get as much out of this as I can?"  Ultimately, of course, you get as much out as you put in, but I digress.

      Here's what I do for "no leecher" torrents, and why:  If a torrent has nobody leeching it, I'll keep it for a few days because someone might come along who hasn't checked into the site recently and want the material.  If there are still a large number of other seeders, I might delete it earlier.

      If I'm the only person seeding it, I tend to hang on a bit longer, because it I delete the torrent, then it's "dead" on the system and nobody can get it.

      As for taxing resources, I don't think having a "no leecher" torrent staying active is a drain on the gt.ru site, but a moderator can weigh in here and correct me as appropriate.  As for whether it's taxing your computer, I tend to think not.  With a Windows machine you can go to the task manager and see how much memory and processor is being used by your torrent client...most likely, it's not very much, and you have  plenty of resources left for other applications.  It might be interesting to do a test, and compare the resources before and after deleting a bunch of unused torrents.

      One other consideration is whether a torrent is consuming one of your allocated/limited-by-the-system download slots:  If you have selected only some of the files in a torrent to download (not all of them), even after those files complete and your torrent client shows 100% completed, the system will still show you as downloading this torrent, because you haven't captured all of it.  If you find that you can't start downloading from a new torrent because you've reached your cap, you can fix this by deleting torrents where you've only snatched some of the files.  Note that it can take the tracker up to 30 minutes (I think) to recognise that you've deleted the partial torrent and then let you start the new one.

      I hope this helps.  Welcome to the site, and happy viewing  ;D

    • RE: Trump's no dummy….

      @ManHandler:

      I have some big problems with Trump, but if you voted for Hillary, than you're just a stupid piece of shit. Sorry. In Haiti she raised a billion dollars in charity and promised to build a hospital and then she kept 90% for administrative fees, fucking over all the Haitian people, who now hate her guts. If you think that's ok, there's something seriously wrong with you. And as far as your Putin puppet bullshit, guess what? Mueller did two years and said there was no evidence, whatsoever. In fact, they literally manufactured evidence, it wasn't even an investigation. That's now the facts. In fact, the only Russia collusion was Hillary and the DNC paying for a fake dossier from Russian Intel Operatives who admitted it was just a conversation in a bar… that Trump had Russian hookers pee on him. You should be ashamed of yourself for being a total idiot.

      I'm not going to take a position on the political issues here…but I'm disappointed to see a forum comment that has so many references back to a person, rather than to the issues.  A post that makes ad hominem references to another poster is better left off the board.

    • RE: This Is Extremely Dangerous To Our Democracy

      It might be well to recall a precept followed by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda from 1933 to 1945:

      “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

      @bearbearbear:

      More alarming, some media outlets publish the same fake stories without checking facts first.

      Much of this is, of course, politically motivated:  Someone hears a story that aligns with their worldview, and they regurgitate it.

      Another troubling factor, though, is that small news outlets in small media markets find it much easier to broadcast someone else's work rather than doing their own.  These people aren't journalists or reporters; they're simply echo chambers.  As you say, though, they have an obligation to check the truth of what they're saying.  But since the process is motivated by a combination of laziness and comfort with the original message, they aren't doing this.

      Perhaps there should be a rule that if you broadcast someone else's copy, one must cite the source.

      I notice that I can edit comments I make on torrents uploaded by other people, but I don't seem to have the edit option if I add a comment to one of my own torrents.  It would be nice to have this option, as one who commits an occasional tyop.  Could this be added to the system?  Perhaps there's a reason for this "feature" that I'm not aware of.
