President Bingu is aware of the laws, but like most people in Malawi, he's not aware that there is an LGBT segment of his population.  The few senior officials/lawmakers with whom I spoke on this topic said, "it's not an issue here–perhaps in prisons or in military barracks--but not in the general population."  That is, of course, incorrect, confusing behaviour with orientation.  Change will only come when sexual minorities become more visible, and the courageous gay couple announcing their engagement is part of that movement.  It is not unlike the way things were in Europe or the Americas 100 years ago.

Please don't misunderstand me--I want to see full equality for LGBT people in Malawi (and everywhere else), but it's unfortunately going to be a while before that happens.

As for the Malawi people being cut off from the rest of the world, I would suggest that it might be the other way 'round:  The rest of the world is cut off from Malawi.  It would be interesting to query people in major cities in the Americas and Europe, showing them an otherwise blank outline map of Africa, and ask them "which of these countries is Malawi?"  I think less than 1% could answer correctly.

As an aside, I really appreciate the respectful, illuminating online forum discussions that we have at gt.ru.  They are, in general, so much more civilised than what one finds on most blogs or other electronic graffiti walls.

The situation is more complex than this.  I used to work for a non-governmental organisation that had operations in Malawi, and I've spent a lot of time there.  The founding president of modern independent Malawi, Hastings Kamuzu Banda, was a very repressive leader (for some 30 years) of a single-part state that censored books, newspapers, films, and even had a national dress code–if the police thought your hair was too long, they would cut it themselves.  People linked this conservatism with independence from colonial rule and, in some ways, became comfortable with it as the price one pays for self-determination.

Bingu's agenda has been primarily one of eliminating corruption and stabilising the food supply for his country.  GLBT issues aren't on his radar scope, nor those of most Malawi politicians or social leaders  The Malawi people (who are among the kindest, warmest, and most hospitable in the world), for the most part, wouldn't know the terms "gay" or "lesbian" even if they're fluent in English.  They are simply not aware of the phenomenon.  There is, though, a small, but growing, pro-equality movement.

Given all this, I commend Bingu for essentially threading a needle:  If he became a public supporter of GLBT rights, that would be so anathema to the people that his government could collapse, and its replacement could be a return to the Banda era.  But by acting as he did, he gently opens the door to a little bit more acceptance and tolerance.  GLBT rights there will come by evolution, not revolution.

Yes, it took international press and attention to stimulate the president's actions, but I don't think it's accurate to say that without this attention he would have been "happy with the situation."  Instead, I think he would have been completely unaware of it.

There's certainly a long, long way to go before LGBT people have equal rights in Malawi (or lots of other countries).  But I think branding Bingu as a homophobe is too simplistic.  He is president of deeply conservative country that faces significant problems--such as preventing its population from dying of hunger, malaria, and AIDS.  I can understand that he and his government would not pay much attention to LGBT rights.  I am confident, though, that eventually the good people of Malawi will join the growing international equality movement.  It won't be this year, or next, but it will happen.

I'd like to reinforce what LB is saying here:  Good sex requires communication, even if he's your BF/partner and you've done it together a thousand times.  Although I like porn (don't we all, or we wouldn't be here!), I think it's unreal to have guys screwing away with no communication about what they like/want/don't like/don't want/etc.

You can't tell how old a guy is by looking at him.  I've taught in middle schools, high (prep) schools, and universities.  I remember two 13-year-old guys who looked old enough that they had no trouble buying alcohol in the states (where the drinking age is 21).  I've also met juniors/seniors in university (likely 20 or 21) who looked five years younger.

Bear in mind also that mainstream media (i.e., Hollywood movies and TV) usually casts five or more years over the age of the character–characters who are supposed to be 18 are played by guys 23 or older; university students who are supposed to be 21 are usually played by actors 26-28 years old.  So a "real" 18 year old will often appear to be a lot younger than he is.

I believe Jay is saying, "if an actor looks under-age, then the material is inappropriate for this site, even if there is a compliance statement."  To be safe, I think this is a good approach, but we have to acknowledge that there's a lot of uncertainty here.  While a 10-year-old is clearly a 10-year-old, it's a lot less clear when guys are older.  I've taught at the junior/senior high and university levels, and I've seen lots of guys who were 20 and looked 16, as well  a few who were 16 who looked 20.  Mass media tends to distort our concept of age, because high school students are often played by actors who are 20, and college students are played by actors who are 25-30.

If this were a court of law, we could presume that a file is appropriate unless proven guilty.  Unfortunately, we don't have any means of getting proof here–so the real question is, "how do we decide if something is inappropriate?"  It comes back to instinct and subjective evaluation, which will never be perfect.  If we err on the safe side (which I think is a good idea), we have to accept that some torrents with entirely legal content are going to be deleted or excluded.  That's just the cost of doing business on a site like this.  I think it's a small price to pay--and there's no shortage of other content available through this site.

On a related note, I would suggest that we use judgment in how we deal with people who upload considered-to-be-inappropriate content:  It's one thing if the material is explicitly banned from this site or contains unquestionably underage actors--those people should probably be banned.  But in the case of the video that started this thread--from a now-defunct website that claimed to be compliant with US age limits--I think the user seeding that material can be counseled about the site's policies and permitted to stay.  I think we can be quick to condemn material, but we should be more cautious about condemning members.

All this discussion of disk images and iso files is interesting…but I keep thinking back to the question that kicked off this thread:

"Should I continue posting in ISO format only for porn ... or should I ... switch to clips and rips?"

If one looks at the statistics for items seeded in the last month, rips in .avi format often get snatched hundreds of times, while DVD's in ISO format seem to get snatched maybe 50-70 times.  (This is from a casual inspection, not a detailed analysis.)  So, it would seem that most people, including myself, prefer .avi format.

Of course, we're a community that honors diversity and difference in opinion, so I'm not saying that the majority has ruled and therefore people "should" seed only .avi format.  Maybe one solution is to seed both--upload a torrent with full DVD, whether native or ISO or split ISO or whatever--and then do a high quality rip and seed that, too.  This way everybody can enjoy the film.
