Hall Monitor syndrome......... a self-appointed censor or two

This could explain some of it. There are some "activists" around who like to impose their preferences on others. (The "one star rating troll" comes to mind.)

There are probably many pieces to the DMCA takedown/vanishing torrent puzzle, and as users we're pretty much left to speculate on our own, perhaps discovering patterns here and there. The owner/operators of the site quite understandably can't/won't comment on this, for everyone's protection.

While it's disappointing to see things go away, there's still lots of good stuff to be found. If one searches for torrents tagged "Bareback," the search engine maxes out at 20,000. Even something specialised like oral sex with hairy guys:

      30488944-6710-4919-a88f-c65280e1a2d4-image.png
gets 151 hits for active torrents.

Some clever searching will turn up a wealth of material to keep our internet connections frying like bacon.

    • RE: Dead Torrent

@ikpooo When the torrent file is downloaded and running in your client (such as uTorrent or whatever you use), you can select some or all of the files that you want to download--just make sure it's in your torrent list, and it will probably say something like "connecting to peers" and show zero seeders.

It will not affect your ratio until someone responds to your reseed request. Once they do, the system will record how much you've downloaded from them. You won't get any upload credit, though, because those people who connected already have the files and it's unlikely that other people will hook up to an old torrent.

Downloading the torrent file and loading in your client will count against your limit for how many torrents you can download in a given day, as well as how many torrents you can have downloading at a time. (It counts as "downloading" even if there's nobody sending you data.) You can find the limits that apply to your account by going to https://www.gaytor.rent/rationator.php

Don't be discouraged: People do sometimes respond to reseed requests. If you're not having luck, though, I recommend against sending additional requests. If somebody got a request once and didn't respond, getting another one likely won't work.

      Good luck!

By all means use the "request reseed" button,
      37da0075-cf33-46aa-8989-76243ca3c090-image.png
but also download the torrent, where it will sit idle on your machine until someone reseeds it.

Will someone in fact reseed the torrent? That depends on how many people snatched the material, and how long ago it was active. In my experience, about one-third of such requests are fruitful, so it's worth a try. If you haven't had luck finding a seeder within a week, it's probably not going to happen and you can delete the torrent from your client.

      This gets stranger and stranger...

I recently freeleeched an old torrent that I uploaded a long time ago--it was dead, and I thought it was a good one, so I wanted to give it some new life.

It was not promoted to the top of the search list with a recycle icon, which I thought was SOP for freeleech torrents...and I was concerned that it wouldn't have any visibility. Nevertheless, very soon quite a few users found it and successfully downloaded it. And, it hasn't been deleted...so freeleeching is not always the kiss of death.

I am reminded of what Nobel winning physicist Richard Feynman once said: "The Universe is not as strange as we imagine; it's stranger than we can imagine."

torrent sites are only able to operate based on the fact that they don't host any copyrighted material.

      This is absolutely on target.

      Case closed.

@kalayaan said in Recycle Icon ♺:

Only mods can recycle (bumping at the top of the list) a torrent
Once an original torrent got duplicated and was reported, mod will then remove the dupe and "bumped" the original torrent with the recycle icon before the title.

I understand that process. There are also some oldies but goodies that are active on the system that newer members might enjoy seeing. I could post a new torrent of them by re-encoding in a different format, but that sounds like a "duplicate in drag" and against the spirit of the rules. Is there a way to promote older material, or do we wait for them to die a natural death?

I think you're probably referring to the fantasy world of other posters in this thread; I'm very aware that everything is copyrighted.

The only stuff I own the copyright to are "home movies" I've made with my boyfriend. If I ever posted those, the consequences to me would make capital punishment look like a parking fine.

This is one of the reasons why i don't use password managers aside from my own mental one.

Ditto...and I use a different password for every site (be it torrent, bank, brokerage, airline, etc.).

I don't know how password managers work (and I have no interest in learning), but they might be helpful for those people who use the same username and password for every online log-in. A former colleague at my firm did that, and got massively screwed over as a result.

    • RE: is it ok to fall for an escort i found online??

      A few thoughts here:

When you say "escort I found online," I presume that you have actually met this person in the flesh. Falling for pictures and text on a computer screen is a ticket to disaster.

Also, be sure that the escort's feelings for you are reciprocated and genuine. Escorts are in the business of making their clients happy, and will lavish compliments about one's body, personality, sex technique, choice of cologne, etc. This is theatre, not reality. It's pleasant in the moment, but it's not real.

Finally, one cannot expect exclusivity. If you "fall for" the guy and start dating him, know that he's still going to be having sex with other people. If that triggers jealousy on your part, this is a situation to be avoided.

On a personal note, a couple of years ago I started dating a guy I met at the gym. I soon found out that he moonlighted with an escort agency that provided companionship for women. Most of his appointments were as arm candy for dinner, theatre, etc., but some of the time it would include sex. He was indeed quite gay, and very much a bottom, but in his own words, "I have to pay the rent." I suspect that I would have been jealous had his clients been men...but instead I only asked that he wash up thoroughly after his appointments.

To borrow a line from The King and I, Is a puzzlement.

I got a notice yesterday that a torrent I posted was taken down...but I built that torrent by taking three "parts" of a story that were downloaded through three separate torrents, and then merging them into a single file as it was much better to view that way. (I gave credit to the three other torrents.)

Those other three torrents are still live on the system, which is a good thing. But it's very strange.

    • RE: Vanishing torrents ...

@krad3434 One way to help a ratio is to download a new torrent and then select only a few (maybe 10% by volume) of the files to actually be downloaded to your computer. (This is easy to do with uTorrent by unticking boxes; it's probably similar with other clients.)

This way you'll be among the first to get that material, and then be a "source" for other downloaders who are likely trying to grab all the files. It also increases the probability that you'll be left with something playable if the torrent is taken down quickly.

The only disadvantage to this strategy is that a torrent for which you haven't downloaded all the files will still take up one of your download slots, even if you have all the stuff that you selected. After the initial surge of people downloading from that torrent, you might want to delete it if you have a small number of allowable slots.
