    • RE: What happens to seed bonus awarded in certain situations?

To make it simple: The system and the moderators got no means at the moment to take away seed bonus points or to transfer other than our own.

Normally we try to follow up not completely seed torrents closely and our action can be very severe (it depends on the reaction of the member, no reaction is the worst), however as we can't take away and give back seed bonus points they remain with the uploader.

It is not more complicated than opening a Paypal account (here open an account at a bitcoin exchange) and sending money from there.

You've got plenty of Seed Bonus Points, which should keep your account in a good standing for a while, if you exchange them for upload.

You are right. As of this night, it isn't possible to see from the torrent page link which is the earlier. the torrent iD aren't simple increments know.

It needs to be looked at the description (for the original upload date and time) and comments may give hints, too. We moderators see a little more, but that causes for us as well difficulties in handling duplicate reports  :afr:

Actually that smaller less quality VHSrip in the example should die a natural death …

I know there are sites that don't allow to upload torrents for lower quality versions of something existing already in better quality, but then, you need to know the source media, format and quality (definition, bit rates, codecs) and all uploaded versions details about format and quality. Such detailed information requirements are missing for the existing torrents and asking for them for new would be a major obstacle for uploads.

In practice that would be possible only by starting a new site from scratch: good luck ...

and in most cases it will save optical disc space, i.e. allow multiple movies on a DVD. You should as well keep in mind that each re-encoding reduces the quality. All common video codec in use are lossy.

    • Bitcoin Mining

When you read about bitcoins, you'll stumble over the possibility to "mine" them. This consists in participation in the bitcoin exchanges by helping with the calculations.

As a low level technology enthusiast, I couldn't resist to give it a trial. Here my experience and view:

      • CPU based bitcoin mining isn't efficient, even using a rather highend multicore processor. The power bill will be much higher than the value of the bitcoins earned (besides the environmental side effects). I've just tested the calculation rate and dropped immediately.

      • GPU (Graphic Cards used as Processor Unit) based mining seems to be able to reach break even, if you run it while running the computer anyway. However, earnings will be very slow, unless you got one or multiple top notch graphic cards. As an example; with my lowend Radeon HD5450 graphics card (thermal design power 20 W), I've mined in 3 days 0.003 bitcoins (3 mBTC), worth right now a little less than 0.5 USD. With a Radeon HD 7970 about 40 times that result can be expected, without being much more efficient. Nevertheless you might want to give it a trail, if you got a highend graphics card anyway.

Then there is bitcoin mining using specific hardware made ONLY for bitcoin mining. Something I haven't tried out, as it requires an important upfront investment:

      • FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) seems to be the current way of bitcoin mining. However their obsolescence is announced with the arrival of ASIC based bitcoin miners. It doesn't make sense to invest into this now, it is too late.

      • ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) based mining is announced as the ultimate (hardware) evolution in bitcoin mining. I didn't find any consumer priced solutions shipping right now, though.

Read more for example there > https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining, there about hardware > https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_Hardware_Comparison

Finally, solo mining is something like a big lottery with a very low chance to be the lucky winner, means you might mine for years without any reward. Therefore it is recommendable to join a mining pool (or create your own pool, if you got knowledge, money and time) where the efforts of thousands of miners are joint and the rewards are dropping in more steadily and are redistributed following different schemes. That is where my 3 mBTC are accounted at the moment.

      Read more there >  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Pooled_mining and > https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Comparison_of_mining_pools

I guess deeper discussions about bitcoin mining belong into the "Technology Stuff" section of our forum 😉

      @Speedmaster8:

I only wanted to make clear, tom, that bitcoins are pretty useless, when it comes to payments and/or donations. I am aware that you certainly may buy percentages of a bitcoin, but after all recalculations, the bitcoin-buyer always looses, when we talk about "real money".  😉

That depends on how you look at it. Bitcoins have advantages:

      • Low to no fees (wallet to wallet) if transferred on bitcoin basis, therefore well adapted for micro payments
      • Increased privacy if for each transaction a new address is created and used

I'd remind that for example Paypal and Banks take fees to withdraw or exchange currencies, too.

Seen the current fluctuations of value, I'd rather prefer not to get my salary in bitcoins, though (even if after the "crash" beginning April, it is climbing in value rather steadily like after the previous crashes).

Vielleicht get GT Guard doch. Am besten schreibst Du die mal an. die haben auch Mitarbeiter die Deutsch sprechen.

You mean movies downloaded here by torrents from here?

If yes, which format are those and can you give a link to an example torrent?

BTW: Why are you converting them to DVD Video format, doesn't your DVD player play AVIs?

    • RE: Bitcoin donation goes live

If you read through my experience, it comes out that the "bitcoin mess", as you call it, is rather simple.

There were two complicated parts in my experience:

      • Trying to understand what bitcoins are, how they work, the risks and the terminology associated. My conclusion is, that for the purpose of small amounts of money transfers, bitcoins can be understand just as a currency.

In opposite to real money, bitcoins are transferred between "addresses", which is a long series of numbers and letters, not bank account numbers (IBAN/BIC) or e-mail addresses (Paypal).

As for any currency, there is speculation on its value ongoing (see Speedmaster8's messages). It being a young, small currency, fluctuations can be high, so I won't use it for savings …, but that isn't the use here for donations.

      • Selecting the service to get some bitcoins for money. There are many, see the lists of them which can be found online, for example there:

How do you buy bitcoins? > http://howdoyoubuybitcoins.com/
Bitcoin Wiki (Buying bitcoins, major exchanges) > https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Buying_bitcoins#Major_Exchanges

Then there is the need to visit a few pre-selected, read there conditions, contact and company information to select one or two you think to trust and being competitive. Here come in many personal factors and therefore a choice which can be good for one, may be bad for another and vice versa.

I've created an own "bitcoin" support section in the forum with a board where members can post there experience with different services, hoping to there will be provided a help for this choice.

Once you have made the choice of your exchange service(s), things are rather straight forward:

      • Registering an account with an exchange service and confirming it

        • Fund the account (or register a bank account for withdrawals)
        • Buy bitcoins, respectively rather a fraction of a bitcoin
        • Sending it to the address shown on the "Donate" page
        • Wait the transfer is confirmed, then validate the donation transfer with the button on the "Donate" page

I am planning to make a pictured guide for the last two bullet's steps, which are common and specific GayTorrent.ru.

We've got automatic redirection over a link anonymity service for the torrent descriptions (and it works for torrent comments and PMs, too), but not for the Forum. Therefore off site live links are not allowed in the forum.[/off-topic]

    • Bitcoin-Central.net

This is the site I've selected to buy my first bitcoins in order to test the bitcoin donations on GayTorrent.ru.

Why did I select this site?

      • Accepts SEPA ( Single Euro Payments Area ) Euro wire transfers

      • No need to leave my bank details, so they withdraw money

      • Low fees: Euro to bitcoins = zero, bitcoin sending 0.5%, Euro funds withdraw by SEPA wire transfer 1 Euro

      • Displays company real address and register number, financial partner is controlled by the French regulator

      • Simple functional site (English and French)

      My experience:

      • Easy inscription on the site, just like on any forum with just the e-mail to confirm. No need to verify identity if low exchange volume.

      • Getting the Euro funds sent being credited there took quite long (likely because it was over the weekend)

      • Fast exchange Euros to BTC

      • Fast transfer of BTC to "my" donator address shown on GayTorrent.ru

Remark: If you are not in the SEPA, forget this site. The fees to send or withdraw Euro funds become prohibitive with 29.95 Euros.
