I would say yes-because for some it's just a fantasy- something forbidden that they'd never try in real life but they can get off on by just watching. Although it becomes more hazy once the person begins to exclusively turn to gay porn to get off. Then it might mean something else.

Is it worth it? The base answer is yes- at least to yourself- there's nothing more liberating than accepting who you are as a person and then sharing your truth with the people who matter to you.

BUT- it also depends on your situation. If you are in a country where society is not so accepting, or your life could be endangered, then it might be best to keep it secret or just share with a select few you trust.

Ultimately, only you are in the best position to judge if coming out is worth it. Your situation is unique and others can only share how it was for them when they made that important choice. No matter what you choose though, it is valid and no one can or should force you to come out if you're not ready.

My core group of close friends (most of whom are straight) all know and we are fine. I don't hide it from new friends, but I also don't wave it in their faces. If it comes up then I answer them honestly and if they have a problem with it then I know they aren't really my friend.

Well- there's a whole lot of gay romance fiction that speaks of these things working out. But real life is a different story. I guess it all comes down to just how "straight" the best friend is. We know there's a spectrum and he may even fall into the more Bi side of things in which case you have a fighting chance. 
I haven't seen it work out- but I'd really like to think it's possible. 

This reminds me of an adorable article I read about a guy who realized that his best friend may be his boyfriend. It makes you wish it worked out for them.
