    • US: Pastor arrested,…..

accused of sexually assaulting subjects of ‘gay cure’ counselling

      From Pink News

      by Joseph Patrick McCormick
      11 November 2012, 12:32am

A Minnesota pastor was arrested, and appeared in court, after two men who were receiving counselling as “treatment” for their “homosexual tendencies,” reported sexual assault.

Reverend Ryan J Muehlhauser, 55, appeared in court on Tuesday, charged with eight felony counts of forth degree criminal sexual conduct on two men whilst helping them “escape the gay lifestyle,” reported KARE.

The accused was a pastor at Lakeside Christian Church in Cambridge, Minnesota, however he met the two men through Outpost Ministries, an organisation which aims to “meet the needs of men and women making the decision to break away from gay life,” according to their website.

The first of the two victims told the police that Muehlhauser ”blessed” him by cupping his genitals. He said that the pastor said he was required to arouse himself in order to find “spiritual strength” and that in an act of “spiritual guidance,” Muehlhauser told him to strip naked, and masturbate in front of him.

The second victim accused Muehlhauser of saying that he would “lose everything” if details of the assault became public.

The abuse allegedly began as early as 31 December 2010, and continued until at least 31 October 2012.

During proceedings, Isanti County Attorney Jeffrey Edblad said:

“To seek comfort and advice and to help address the pain they were experiencing only to have them experience a more horrific type of pain, sadness.”

Sherwood McKinnis, defending Reverend Muehlhauser, suggested that it may not be necessary for the defendant to receive criminal punishment for his actions. He said:

“Mr. Muehlhauser has made significant contributions to the community, he’s married and has a good and solid clergial support,”

“We can certainly expect that group of people to hold Mr. Muehlhauser accountable for his actions.”

Lakeside Christian Church also released a statement:

“As a church, we are deeply saddened by the report by certain inappropriate behaviors during counseling sessions by one of our pastors, Ryan Muehlhauser,”

“At this point we do not believe that there has been any involvement with minors. We ask that if you are aware of any others that may have been abused, you immediately report that to the Isanti County Sheriff’s Department at 763-689-2141.”

A statement also appeared on the Outpost Ministries website, looking to distance the organisation from the accusations against Reverend Muehlhauser. It read:

“Outpost Ministries is deeply grieved over the allegations regarding Ryan Muehlhauser. Outpost fundamentally stands against sexual abuse and exists, in part, to minister to those who have been wounded by such violence. Ryan is not and has never been a member of Outpost staff nor was he a pastor to whom we referred clients.

“We continue to stand with the two young men who experienced this atrocity and we desire to help them in any way we are able. Our sorrow and our prayers go out to all who have been sexually violated.”

Reverend Muehlhauser has been released, pending a second hearing next month.

      The case continues.

    • Hillary Clinton supports London LGBT corporate summit

      From Pink News

      by Scott Roberts
      12 November 2012, 11:41am

Chief executives from some of the world’s largest companies will come together to discuss how the financial services industry can advance LGBT equality in a move which has the backing of Hillary Clinton.

The Out on the Street summit will be held in London on Tuesday 13 November 2012, at the global headquarters of the law firm Clifford Chance and has the support of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In a letter to the organisers, Mrs Clinton writes: “The inaugural Out on the Street summit in Europe is an exciting opportunity to connect with one another and share strategies on how to advance the rights of LGBT individuals in the workplace and beyond, and to underscore why this issue matters for the industry”.

Todd Sears, the founder of Out on the Street, said: “When I created Out on the Street two years ago my primary objective was to leverage the collective power of the titans of financial services as an agent of change.

“To date, we have already made an unprecedented impact by bringing together more than 600 senior business leaders – 70% of whom are managing-director level or higher – and eleven member companies with more than $630 billion (£385 billion) in market capitalisation, in support of LGBT equality.”

Lord Browne, former group chief executive of BP, will moderate a panel comprised of Paul Reed, CEO Integrated Supply Trading, BP; James Leigh-Pemberton, CEO United Kingdom, Credit Suisse; Simon Collins, United Kingdom chairman, senior partner, KPMG; and John Haley, CEO, Towers Watson.

They will speak about their companies’ support for LGBT equality and their personal commitment to advancing LGBT rights.

Lord Browne, who also has been talking about his own experience of being gay and a corporate leader to the Sunday Telegraph, said: “It is essential that business leaders make sure that LGBT people feel included in the workplace and not inadvertently excluded by thoughtless acts big and small.

“We do need more role models. No one should underestimate the impact of having successful and openly gay people working at companies, particularly at a senior level.”

Antony Jenkins, chief executive of Barclays, said: “Equality is critically important to Barclays because it helps to ensure that we provide our customers and clients with the best possible service.

“That’s why we support events such as Out on the Street. By using the collective power of the financial services industry, we can accelerate the pace of change across the LGBT community.”

    • Uganda to pass anti-gay law before 2013, says Kadaga

      From Pink News

      by Scott Roberts
      12 November 2012, 12:40pm

The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament says the country’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill will be passed by lawmakers before the end of this year.

In the past few weeks, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has repeatedly suggested that Uganda’s MPs will finally get a chance to vote on the legislation.

The bill was first introduced in 2009 by MP David Bahati, but has yet to gain parliamentary approval.

On Monday, Speaker Kadaga told the Associated Press that the bill, which originally mandated death for some gay sexual acts, will become law before the end of Christmas.

Ugandans “are demanding it,” she said, reiterating a promise she made after returning from a conference in Canada last month.

Last Friday, an anti-gay protest took place outside a school in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, with parents and schoolchildren holding up signs saying homosexuality is “an abomination.”

Speaker Kadaga then promised to consider the bill within two weeks, declaring that “the power is in our hands.”

At the start of last week, Speaker Kadaga attended a human rights conference in London at Westminster’s Portcullis House.

Conservative MP Margot James urged for the world’s politicians to promote gay rights and alluded to the situation in Uganda.

While the bill appears to be popular in Uganda, it has attracted widespread criticism abroad.

US President Barack Obama has described it as “odious,” while some European countries have threatened to cut aid to Uganda if the bill becomes law.

    • 'Second Skin' Video…......

Highlights Ongoing Discrimination Against Gay And Lesbian Soldiers

A poignant new video which aims to draw attention to how gay and lesbian soldiers continue to face discrimination even after the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is making the blogosphere rounds.

Titled "Second Skin," the clip honors "all who have served our nation so honorably; but we reserve a special remembrance for all those who have provided the same service, taken the same risks, and made the same sacrifices to keep us safe, yet are treated as second-class citizens by the country they are sworn to protect," according to veteran and OutServe-SLDN executive director Allyson Robinson.

More specifically, "Second Skin" – which was produced by Freedom to Marry and OutServe-SLDN -- hopes to show how LGBT soldiers are treated differently because of the Defense of Marriage Act.

    • Obama On Historic Gay Marriage Wins:

      President Is 'So Absolutely Delighted'

In addition to his own election victory, President Barack Obama is reportedly "so absolutely delighted" by the four historic same-sex marriage wins across the country.

Buzzfeed's Chris Gelder reports that Obama Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett spoke to supporters of the Human Rights Campaign on Nov. 8, and said the president believes voters in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington "all came down on the right side of history."

Jarrett also took time to clarify the Obama administration's stance on another benchmark win: "We couldn't be more thrilled that Wisconsin is sending Tammy Baldwin to the Senate," she said.

Baldwin will become the country's first openly gay senator.

Take a look at other openly LGBT candidates who were victorious on Election Night below:

    • Coming Out and Fighting for LGBT Rights as a Gay Iraq War Veteran

      By Rob Smith

I'm a decorated Iraq War veteran and LGBT activist, and this past Spirit Day I had the opportunity to speak about my experiences to college students attending a conference in upstate Pennsylvania.

I'm choosing to share this small portion of my talk in the days before Veterans Day because as we celebrate this national holiday, it's important that we don't forget the contributions of LGBT people who have served our country throughout history and have been invisible – until now. With the historic repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) now firmly etched in the history books, we opened the door to a generation of service members who will no longer have to hide their sexual orientation.

However, they still face roadblocks to full equality both in the U.S. Armed Forces and elsewhere. Gay and lesbian soldiers are still fighting for equal partner benefits, the addition of sexual orientation to the military's nondiscrimination policy, and open service for their transgender brothers and sisters.

As we celebrate this Veterans Day and our historic wins for equality all around, it's important for us to use our voices and speak out in the name of full equality for the LGBT community.

The military builds leaders and commands respect, and it is my hope that the many military men and women who were involved in the hard-won fight to repeal DADT will use those skills to help the LGBT community in all future fights for our civil rights.

We will never be silenced again, we will never be invisible again, and my voice is just one of many that will bring full LGBT equality to this great nation I once wore a uniform to protect.

    • HuffPost GayVoices Readers Share What Is Next For Them In the Fight For Equality

This week has been a pretty huge week for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights and for LGBT people in politics. Tuesday night brought us a number of openly gay members of the House of Representatives and Congress and the reelection of the first President to openly support gay rights.

We even saw a lesbian couple get engaged at President Obama's reelection party! So understandably, emotions are high and many of us let out a huge sigh of relief on Wednesday morning.

Just the same, that doesn't mean we're where we need to be yet. We still have a lot of work to do. So, we turned to our Twitter family to ask what we should focus on next (after we're done celebrating).

Below we rounded up a few of the responses we got. We want to hear from you! What's next for us? What should we be focusing on? How can we take advantage of this momentum?

    • Denmark's Gay Penguins Become Fathers

In what the Toronto Star describes as an "apparent world first," a Danish zoo's King penguin chick has two "adoptive" fathers.

After a female penguin abandoned one of her eggs, zoologists at the Odense Zoo decided to see how two male penguins would handle the egg. As it turns out, they were "natural parents."

"With King penguins, they mix it between the male and female. One stands with the egg while the other goes to feed and then they shift," zoologist Nina Christensen is quoted as saying. "It was the same with this pair. They both incubated the egg.”

Odense Zoo's penguins aren't the first "gay" couple to become parents, even though they are a first as far as King penguins are concerned. Two male Chinstrap penguins at New York's Central Park 'adopted" and then reared an egg, as depicted in the controversial children's book "And Tango Makes Three." Meanwhile, zoologists at Germany's Bremerhaven Zoo helped two "gay" Humbolt penguins hatch and nurture an egg in 2009.

Take a look at the gay penguins with their new chick below:
