Report: 265 Trans People Murdered In One Year

A NEW report released Wednesday shows that 265 transgender people became victims of violent killings across the world over the last 12 months. In total, since January 2008 the murders of 1083 trans people have been reported.

A new report released Wednesday shows that 265 transgender people became victims of violent killings across the world over the last 12 months.

The figures were released yesterday by the Trans Murder Monitoring project and they indicated a 20% increase from last year, when 221 trans murders were reported.

In total, since January 2008 the murders of 1083 trans people have been reported.

The Trans Murder Monitoring (TMM) project started in April 2009 and systematically monitors, collects and analyses reports of homicides of trans people worldwide.

Updates of the preliminary results, which have been presented in July 2009 for the first time, are published on the website of the “Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide” project 2 to 3 times a year in form of tables, name lists and maps.

‘We are witnessing a significant increase [of murders], which points to the extreme level of violence many trans people continue to be exposed to,’ said a statement from Transgender Europe.

The update shows reports of murdered or killed trans people in 29 countries in the last 12 months, with the majority from Brazil (126), Mexico (48), and the USA (15), followed by Venezuela (9), Honduras (8), Colombia (6), Uruguay (6) and Guatemala (5). In Asia most reported cases have been found in India (6), Pakistan (5) and the Philippines (4), and in Europe in Turkey (5).

Central and South America accounted for 80 % of the globally reported homicides of trans people since January 2008.

The figures were released for the 14th International Transgender Day of Remembrance, that will be commemorated around the world on Tuesday 20 November.

November 20th, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR)

Even today, a high price is still paid for transgressing the gender that society imposes according to the person’s biological sex and for breaking the rules imposed by the majority.

For a few years now, the Transgender Day of Remembrance has been commemorated on November 20th. In this date, we remember the comrades of all genders who have passed away due to the irrational hatred of those who believe that disruption of gender boundaries must be punished with death.

We have adopted officially this day in order to remember the death of Rita Hester, which led the following year to the creation of the website "Remembering our dead”, a project that also included a candlelight vigil in 1999 in San Francisco, USA. Since then, this event is held in many cities worldwide.

This date is important to give visibility to the consequences that exclusion and discrimination imposed by the social majority can have on a trans person (transgender, transvestites, transsexuals, cross-dressers and other gender dissidents), marking her or him with stigma. The organizations representing these people and asking for respect for their human rights should continue denouncing this situation, benefiting from this Day to express demands to their States, and to increase the visibility of problems affecting trans people. In most cases, these persons are forced to become sex workers, an activity which renders them vulnerable to Hiv/Aids and which exposes them to becoming victims of violence – often resulting in loss of lives as a result of hate crimes.

These hate crimes on the basis of the gender identity assumed by trans people (transgender, transvestites, transsexuals, cross-dressers and other gender dissidents) are happening everywhere in the world. Today, Trans organizations committed to the defense of the rights of their collective, denounce these deaths through alerts and reports. These are collected in the Handbook of Intolerance kept by the ILGA Trans Secretariat and in the "Trans Murder Monitoring Project” of the European Union Trans Conference (TGEU). In such a way we can inform the world about global social practices that must be eradicated everywhere, since they undermine all values and dignity of the person, says Belissa Andía, of Instituto Runa de Desarrollo y Estudios sobre Genero in Peru.

The situation experienced by these persons worldwide is indeed alarming. They are excluded from education, employment, justice, health services, etc. These spaces and services, to which they are entitled as human beings and citizens, are denied to them due to transphobia. Even when they can access them in some cases, they are subject to discrimination, because they are different from the majority, because they allegedly violate the rules established by the rest of the society. This discrimination is often imposed by religious beliefs that condemn diversity.

Nowadays several international groups are advocating for the removal of the term "transsexual" from the next version of the World Health Organization (WHO) catalogue of mental illnesses. They request that this condition be recognized as part of the complex sexual identity of human beings. Any trans person –so as many non-trans persons– can attest that being trans is not something that needs psychiatric treatment: it is the process whereby a person self defines his or her gender.

According to feminist activist Silvia Buendía "Homosexuality is a sexual orientation, a person who is sexually attracted to someone of the same sex. The transsexual or transgender condition is totally different: it concerns a person born with a certain biological sex, but who starts a process of identification to another gender when growing up.

The price that is paid for breaking the barriers of sex and gender is way too high. We must all do something to stop this.

Judge William Thomas

Obama said Judge William Thomas and other nominees “represent my continued commitment to ensure that the judiciary resembles the nation it serves.” Thomas would be the first gay black man on the federal judiciary.

The White House announced on Wednesday that President Obama has nominated Judge William Thomas, an out gay man, to serve on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Thomas would be the first out LGBT black man to serve as a lifetime-tenured federal judge.

In a statement, Obama noted the diversity of Thomas and six other nominees, saying, "They … represent my continued commitment to ensure that the judiciary resembles the nation it serves."

He added, "These individuals have demonstrated the talent, expertise, and fair-mindedness Americans expect and deserve from their judicial system. I am grateful for their willingness to serve and confident that they will apply the law with the utmost impartiality and integrity. Too many of our courtrooms stand empty. I hope the Senate will promptly consider all of my nominees and ensure justice for everyday Americans."

Thomas is the first out LGBT black judge to be nominated by Obama, but, if approved by the Senate, he would be the second out LGBT black judge. The first, Judge Deborah Batts, also was the first out LGBT federal judge. She was nominated by President Clinton and sat on the Southern District of New York bench. She took "senior status," a near retirement, earlier this year.

It is unlikely, due to the time nominations take to proceed in the current Congress, that Thomas, currently a state-court judge in Florida, would see a vote on his nomination in this Congress.

Thomas joins Pamela Ki Mai Chen, an out lesbian nominated this summer to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and Judge Michael McShane, an out judge nominated in September to serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, in the line of judicial nominees waiting for Judiciary Committee action on their nomination and the subsequent Senate votes.

Obama has now nominated seven out lawyers for lifetime-tenured federal judgeships, three of whom already have been approved by the Senate. Judges J. Paul Oetken and Alison Nathan both now sit on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, which is in Manhattan. Judge Michael Fitzgerald sits on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

The final out LGBT Obama judicial nominee, Edward DuMont, eventually had his nomination withdrawn after there was no movement on it over the course of two sessions of Congress. He was nominated for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in the 111th and 112th congresses, but the nomination was later withdrawn. Democrats cited Republican opposition, but Republicans noted that Democrats could have moved forward regardless of the Republicans' views.

Denis Dison of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund told BuzzFeed that Thomas was recommended for a judgeship by the Presidential Appointments Project, which the Victory Fund coordinates.

Having lived in Florida for many years I know that it would have been a fairly easy process to have this man placed under a "Baker Act" that would have involuntarily confined him for 72 hrs for evaluation at least. It would have had the potential for a longer confinement if found to be necessary.

This is truly a sad state of affairs indeed and raises more questions than answers provided thus far.  :cry2:

I would take this problem of yours to heart and make it my job to help you thru this "block". Balls deep penetration can be quite pleasurable for both the Top and Bottom but does not happen instantly or even overnight for most bottoms. In response to these complaints about the new Auto Approval for everyone :

Staff is well aware of the new set up problems this system has caused. It really has not created new problems but has made public the problems that always existed and the Mod's had to deal with under the old Torrent Approval System.

I can assure you all that we are discussing the solutions for these issues and formulating an attack plan to help resolve or at least lessen the issues. I can tell you our best option, with the current tools we have at our disposal, is to verbally warn first and then remove the members Auto Approval Status so that future uploads go thru a Mod Approval Process.

Discovering these issues is a different story.

The best way for members to assist in this new learning curve ~ especially our old AA Group members ~ is to report any and every torrent and /or user that you know or feel is violating our Rules. Literally blow up the "Report Button" so that Staff can deal with the situation thru educating the member about the problem he has created. If he does not learn and correct the situation then we will continue with removing the Auto Approval at the very least. Severity and repeated Rules violations will always carry the worst result possible ~ banning the account.

These changes were deemed necessary for the future of GT.ru and we will and have been working to "Plug the Cracks" and continue to be the Best Gay Torrent Site in the world. This must be a Team Effort between Staff and Members at this point to work on the improvements we need to make under this new Auto Approval for everyone.

I hope no one is angry or insulted by my post ~ I am just stating facts and hoping to clear up confusion.

I took a look at your account and you only have a few torrents that have actual leechers and then there are only 1 or 2 leechers on those torrents. This means you will not show much upload speed unfortunately. Because you are at the mercy of the download speed of the single leecher and the # of seeders on that torrent as well can limit your portion of the uploading swarm. I hope this makes sense to you, it can be very confusing.

You should set your client upload speed to Unlimited as a first step.

Then you should download something you like from the newest torrent posts to the tracker. Torrents that have only 1 seeder and many leechers is best. These torrent will usually seed while leeching as new members join the leeching swarm. They also will continue to seed after the download is completed. Downloading older torrents will not usually help your ratio no matter how badly you may want the torrent.

You have uploaded 1 torrent to the tracker already and if you have more this helps your ratio greatly as well.

I will give you 100 Seed Bonus Points for that upload. This will give you the Seed Bonus Points to fix your ratio but just barely. Then try the above advice for a few days or so and see if this help you build your ratio. It may be slow but gain is gain just be patient with the process. And if you have any more questions just ask. :hug:
