Friedrich Merz, the [CDU] chancellor-in-waiting, negotiated the biggest debt package in modern German history to fund the expansion of the country’s military.
The AfD has called it “the biggest deception in post-war history”.
While the military spending has been praised abroad, it has proved highly controversial inside Germany due to it breaching repeated promises by Mr Merz not to take on new debt.
In the build up to the German election in February, Mr Merz’s CDU repeatedly assured the German public that it would defend the country’s “debt brake”...Mr Merz had promised that he would fund an increase in military spending by cutting welfare payments and reducing the number of staff elsewhere in Germany’s large federal bureaucracy.
...the conservative press, which had been expecting Mr Merz to announce spending cuts, described the debt package as “a betrayal”.
The German public agreed, with a recent poll showing that three quarters of them thought that Mr Merz had deceived them ahead of the election, which the CDU won with 29 per cent of the vote.
