Nice of you to say that in Private conversations you'd refrain from using the word. However when you read it in magazines and newspapers, hear it on the radio and on TV and in film, the offence taken by many is not assuaged. If fact because of the lack of self censorship, the offence is compounded.

As to LGBT, I'd separate L and G from the Band T. I have no problem with my lesbian sisters being associated with me as a gay man. It is basically two people of the same sex wanting to be recognised as such.

Thanks for your intervention. As the OP, please do remember the hurt and distress that older gays have when they hear the word used. As I said originally, it'll never be a word that can be associated with pride by us. Sometimes when I hear it being used it's like having the term rammed down my throat violently.

Ok, I am of an age, an age for who the word Queer is totally offensive.

It was used as a derogatory term against gay men and women.

To walk down the street and have the word directly shouted at you, and the times when gay men and women were hassled, bullied, pushed about, pushed to the ground, kicked, and beaten up, bruised and bloodied whilst having the word Queer shouted at you.

I am of an age when we fought for the term "gay" to be accepted for homosexual men and women, and it has done so.

I cannot accept that the word queer is a badge of honour. It seems that there are some who use it as a form of radical political lifestyle. Usually of the Political left. ( I am quite prepared to accept that may not be totally correct).

When I read the term queer in an article in a newspaper, or on an on-line forum, I stop reading. It is offensive to me. when I hear it used to describe a gay lifestyle on the radio or on television, I switch off. I honestly become quite upset. I am sure that there are many, especially of my age and maybe younger who also hate the use of the word.

I would be very interested to read of others views.

By the way: The term LGBT is something else I reject. I am gay. My lesbian sisters I embrace. I feel no identity with Bi-sexuals or Transexuals. I fail to understand why I have to be grouped with them. Land G is perfectly OK by me. It's even got to the ridiculous state that I read somewhere LGBTQI+! God knows who dreamt up that one.
