    • Vincent and Bruno got married, the first in France

      By Catherine Bremer

MONTPELLIER, France (Reuters) - Not even France's biggest street protests in years - or a smoke bomb lobbed toward the city hall - could stop Vincent and Bruno getting married.

The first gay couple to wed since France became the 14th country to permit same-sex marriage, Vincent Autin, 40, and Bruno Boileau, 29, exchanged vows and rings on Wednesday to cheers and applause at a city hall ringed by riot police.

"I pronounce you joined in matrimony in the name of the law," said Helene Mandroux, mayor of the southern of city of Montpellier, which styles itself France's most "gay-friendly".

The two men, in matching tuxedos, embraced to Frank Sinatra singing "Love and Marriage" and spoke of how it would help them start a family - new legal rights that hundreds of thousands protested against, some violently, right up until this week.

"Love each other, love us, love one another, because it's important," said gay rights activist Autin, choking with emotion and adding that the couple hoped now to apply to adopt a child.

"This protects the family we want to build."

Minutes earlier, as the pair had prepared to make their entrance in front of 500 invited guests, journalists and well-wishers inside the futuristic, blue-glass city hall, someone had tossed a smoke bomb into the building's grounds.

The law granting gay men and lesbians equality in marriage and adoption has been among the most divisive of President Francois Hollande's first year in office, tapping a groundswell of liberal opinion in predominantly Roman Catholic France but enraging traditionalists, the far-right and many churchgoers.

Mayor Mandroux, from Hollande's Socialist party, scrapped plans for the ceremony to be shown on a giant TV screen outside city hall, fearing trouble of the kind seen at the last protest march in Paris on Sunday that drew hundreds of thousands.

      BROADCAST ONLINE

It was broadcast instead online and in the end the dozens of riot police who ringed the building had little to do. Leading opponents of the marriage law had called publicly for restraint.

After the couple and their guests had gone, an anonymous bomb threat called in to the authorities prompted police to evacuate the building, but no device was found.

"We're rather relieved it's all over," Boileau told reporters after waving to a whistling crowd of well-wishers, some dressed in drag as carnival nuns, from a city hall balcony - an experience he said gave him goosebumps.

Boileau's tearful mother Dominique, dressed in a short white dress and coral jacket, said: "I cried when Hollande passed the law and I am still crying. I am proud of them."

"It's a fantastic day for us, for our generation and for the kids that will have proper homes because of this," said student Lucile Dampierre, 24, a lesbian activist among the crowd.

The happy couple, who have been together since they hit it off six years ago discussing music in an online forum, planned a private wedding party and then some quiet time together.

Since Autin proposed in September - in a public occasion with city hall officials - protest rallies partly fuelled by anger with Hollande over other issues like the economy appear to have eroded support for the gay marriage law; it now stands at 53 percent, with 47 percent opposed, reflecting deep division, particularly over the adoption rights it includes.

On Wednesday, the interior minister said there had been a rise in threatening behavior against gay people and said France may well toughen penalties for homophobic acts and speech.

Last week, one opponent of gay marriage shot himself dead at the altar of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral and there was some violence during Sunday's anti-gay marriage march in the capital.

That evening, the jury at the Cannes Film Festival, along France's Mediterranean coast from Montpellier, handed top prize to an explicit, taboo-shattering love story between two women.

    • Angry about immigration plan, some gay donors cut off Democrats

      By Rachelle Younglai

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Some disappointed activists say they are yanking their support for the Democratic Party after Senate Democrats opposed a proposal in an immigration bill that would have allowed citizens to bring their foreign-born, same-sex spouses to the United States.

Jonathan Lewis, a Miami philanthropist who donated more than $35,000 in 2012, has stopped giving and is urging others to do the same until President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats stop breaking promises to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

"Now is the time to stop investing in Democratic cowardice and stand proud by withholding donations until we see our friends' actions and deeds align with their rhetoric," Lewis said in an email to Reuters.

"Pretty words about fairness and equality under the law from the president and Democrats in Congress do not absolve them from their moral duty to act," he said.

Obama won points with activists when he endorsed same-sex marriage while running for re-election last year and then referred to it in his inauguration speech in January. Now almost every Democrat in the Senate and a few Republicans have come out supporting same-sex marriage.

But Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee helped keep a proposal out of a sweeping immigration overhaul that would have allowed citizens to petition for their same-sex spouses to immigrate to the United States - the same way that heterosexuals can be reunited with their spouses.

      WAVERING SUPPORT

This comes as Obama has so far declined to sign an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.

Shortly before voting to pass the bill out of committee on May 21, several committee Democrats said they could not support the amendment offered by Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy. They said they feared it would kill the entire immigration legislation and not get any Republican support.

"The issue of marriage is a fundamental right," said Juan Ahonen-Jover, a Florida-based entrepreneur and philanthropist who spends his time promoting equal rights for the LGBT community. "Even prisoners on death row have the right to marry."

Ahonen-Jover said he and his husband contributed $10,000 to Obama after the president announced his support for same-sex marriage in May 2012. He estimates that they have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to the Democratic Party in the past.

Now, he said, they are not planning on giving until "the Democratic Party starts acting like Democrats and show some spine." Ahonen-Jover and his partner have created a website, www.equalitygiving.org, that serves as a forum for other LGBT donors who want to make a difference politically.

Rachel Tiven, the executive director of the gay rights group Immigration Equality, said numerous donors she has spoken to are "very, very angry" and want Democrats to pay a price financially.

"They don't expect that the support for gay rights is theoretical," she said.

A spokesman for another gay rights group, Human Rights Campaign, stressed that Republicans also were to blame but said, "The betrayal the community feels is especially palpable toward the Democratic senators because they've been our traditional allies."

The Senate immigration bill, which proposes sweeping changes to the current system and would give millions of undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship, is headed to the Senate floor in June where it is expected to undergo hundreds of amendments.

Although the Supreme Court could soon strike down a federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, activists are not counting on a ruling in their favor. Currently there are 12 states that allow same-sex couples to marry.

      DISSATISFIED WITH SCHUMER

A number of LGBT activists say the immigration shift marks the third time that immigration bill sponsor New York Senator Charles Schumer, who opposed the Leahy amendment in committee, has let them down.

They said Schumer told them he was hoping to include the same-sex provisions also known as the Uniting American Families Act, or UAFA, in the immigration legislation he was crafting with seven other Democratic and Republican senators.

When the bill was introduced in April, Schumer called leaders in the LGBT community to say the equal marriage measure was not included, but told them not to worry because Democrats would vote in favor of the provision in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But on May 21, Schumer and other Democrats on the committee said they could not support the provision if it meant killing the entire immigration bill.

"Senator Schumer is and has always been a strong supporter of UAFA," said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Schumer. "However, Republicans said they would walk away from the whole bill over this issue, which would have resulted in no immigration reform, as well as no UAFA."

A Schumer aide said the senator would spend the next couple of weeks focused on getting the seven or eight Republicans needed to pass the same-sex provision in hopes that bipartisan support would help ensure passage of the entire bill.

"I was in total shock as the whole thing was happening," said Ness Madeiros, whose visa expires in July and who could have to return to her home country Bermuda despite living with her wife and child in Minnesota.

Madeiros, who married an American, Ginger Madeiros, in Massachusetts, said she was bitterly disappointed by the Democrats.

"I thought they were in our corner," she said.

    • Most Gay-Friendly Cities in America

by Divya on May 28, 2013

Happy Pride Month!  To celebrate, NerdWallet crunched the numbers to put together a list of the most gay-friendly cities based on municipal laws, community and peer support, and safety and tolerance.  The cities listed fulfill the following three requirements:

Do the laws support gay residents?  We used the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index to assess the municipal laws affecting LGBT residents.  The index measures the equality of each city’s non-discrimination laws, relationship recognition, employment practices, city services, law enforcement and municipality leadership.
Is there a LGBT community and can you find peer support?  We included the percentage of same-sex households in the region from the U.S. Census.
Is the community safe and tolerant toward gays?  We included the number of hate crimes for sexual orientation per 100,000 residents in our overall score.

      Most Gay-Friendly Cities

      1.    Palm Springs, CA

Palm Springs is known as a hotspot for gay tourism, but the city has a thriving year-round LGBT culture for residents as well.  A whopping 8.6% of households consist of same-sex partners. The city’s yearly Pride festival is one of the community’s most popular events, and this two-day festival celebrates the gay rights movement’s history of activism.

      2.    San Francisco, CA

Known for its diversity and tolerance, the Bay Area is home to a large gay population and a thriving gay culture.  San Francisco’s historic Castro District has a strong history in the gay rights movement, and the area maintains several historical landmarks, such as the Castro Theater and Harvey Milk Square, a tribute to the influential activist and hate crime victim.  San Francisco is the birthplace of many celebrated gay activists and comedians, including Margaret Cho and B.D. Wong, as well as home to gay rights activist and mayor Gavin Newsom.

      3.    Seattle, WA

Seattle’s LGBT hub, Capitol Hill, is the center of the city’s gay culture, housing many gay bars and businesses.  In Seattle, gay marriage is legal, and the city has experience rapid growth in the population of LGBT families.  Organizations like Families Like Ours help Washington couples adopt and foster children.

      4.    Long Beach, CA

Businesspeople will find ample support with the Long Beach Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which offers networking events and collaborative communities.  Additionally, The Long Beach Pride Parade is an incredibly popular community event, attracting 80,000 participants each year.

      5.    Cambridge, MA

The People’s Republic of Cambridge has zero sexual orientation-related hate crimes in 2011, making this a safe and tolerant area for gay residents.  Cambridge is the residence of gay rights activist and Senator Elizabeth Warren, and the state was the first to legalize same-sex marriage.

      6.    Los Angeles, CA

West Hollywood is the area’s premiere gay neighborhood, with plenty of restaurants and bars.  LGBT residents can check out the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center for resources.  The LA Pride Parade attracts 400,000 attendees every year.

      7.    Portland, OR

Portland’s large gay population has led to a plethora of annual LGBT festivals, including the Portland Queer Music Festival, the Portland Latino Gay Pride Parade, and the Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.  Portland has special historic significance as well.  The city was the first in Oregon to adopt civil rights protections for gay residents

      8.    Philadelphia, PA

The City of Brotherly Love lives up to its name.  This tolerant, gay-friendly city is supportive of the gay community.  To supplement Philadelphia’s gay tourism industry, Temple University has partnered with the Gay Tourism Caucus to create a Gay Sensitivity Training for professionals in the tourism industry.

      9.    San Diego, CA

Hillcrest, San Diego’s biggest gay neighborhood, boasts plenty of local-owned cafes, bars and independent stores.  Plus, LGBT residents can find resources and support at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, the nation’s second oldest and third largest LGBT community center.  The Greater San Diego Business Association, the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce provides support and community for gay entrepreneurs and small business owners as well.

      10.  New York, NY

New York City is a well-known epicenter of gay culture, with plenty of gay bars, gay theater and a rich and diverse arts culture.  West Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen and East Village all have thriving gay communities.  The Center, a LGBT community center, is an incredible resource for LGBT residents as well as an advocacy center.  New York City has allowed same-sex marriage since the summer of 2011.  New York was the birthplace of gay actors Cynthia Nixon and Anthony Perkins as well as singer and gay rights activist Cyndi Lauper.

      Methodology:

The overall score was compiled from the following data:

Municipal Equality Index from the Human Rights Campaign
Percent unmarried same-sex households from the Census (dataset S1101)
Number of sexual orientation-related hate crimes divided by the population from the FBI Crime Statistics

88 cities were included in this analysis

Some Churches Say They'll Cut Ties to Boy Scouts Following Its Lifting Ban on Gay Scouts

      By CHRISTINA NG

A number of churches that previously sponsored Boy Scout troops have said they plan to sever ties to the organization following its decision to lift a longtime national ban on admitting openly gay Scouts. Openly gay adults will still be barred from leadership roles in the organization.

"I think I can say with pretty strong accuracy that the vast majority of Southern Baptists are very disappointed in the latest change in policy … deeply disappointed," Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee, told ABCNews.com.

Page said that the Southern Baptist Convention -- the largest Protestant denomination in the United States -- would be holding its national meeting in two weeks, after which it would likely recommend that its 47,000 U.S. churches pull away from the Boy Scouts of America. From there, it is up to each individual church to decide what to do, said Page.

About 70 percent of all local Boy Scout troops are supported by religious groups, according to the Boy Scouts of America, and the Southern Baptist Convention currently sponsors "hundreds of troops, probably thousands," Page said.

"We don't hate people," said Page. "We don't hate anybody, but we just felt like there's got to be some objective standard, and we felt they were maintaining that until recently."

The Mormon church, which sponsors most of the troops, has endorsed allowing gay Scouts. The Roman Catholic Church, the second-largest troop sponsor, has said it was going to use the time before the new policy takes effect on Jan. 1 to think about how and if it would affect the church.

The National Jewish Committee on Scouting, the Episcopal Church, the United Church of Christ, the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Metropolitan Community Church all urged full repeal of the longtime ban.

But many other Christian groups continue to protest, citing religious freedom and the 2000 U.S. Supreme Court decision that gave the Boy Scouts the constitutional right to keep out gay members.

The Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky., which has about 300 families who participate in Scouting, also announced its plan to break its Boy Scout ties.

"Truly, for us it's a logical decision," Tim Hester, the church's executive pastor, told the Courier-Journal newspaper. "We cannot be distracted from the mission God has called us to."

Last week's decision to lift the ban was a "catalyst" in breaking away from the Boy Scouts but was not the church's only reason for doing so, Hester said, citing directional differences between the organization and the church.

"We want everyone, including ourselves, to live by biblical standards," Hester told the newspaper.

Hester did not immediately respond to ABCNews.com's request for comment.

One of the first religious organizations to denounce the Boy Scout's new policy on allowing gay members was the Assemblies of God, the world's largest Pentecostal group, saying in a statement, "We believe that the BSA policy change will lead to a mass exodus from the Boy Scout program, as Assemblies of God and many other churches can no longer support groups that are part of an organization allowing members who are openly homosexual."

Page, of the Southern Baptist Convention, echoed that sentiment. "I warned Scouting executives that this would happen, and they supposedly realized it would happen, but they thought they would gain more," Page said. "I assured them that if your goal is to minister to the largest number of youth, those were their words, then changing this is going to be a detriment to your goal."

The Boy Scouts said in a statement that it respected the "deeply held" religious beliefs of its members but encouraged them to read the resolution about the new policy. "We believe this policy is reflective of the beliefs of most of Scouting's major religious chartered organizations and are unaware of any that believe a youth member simply stating he or she is attracted to the same sex, but not engaging in sexual activity, should make him or her unwelcome in their congregation. While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting."

Gay rights advocates believe the Boy Scouts' new policy may actually attract new organizations and members who may have been put off by its former practices.

    • Cardinal George Pell Admits Abuse Cover-Up To Protect Australian Catholic Church

Fear of scandal prompted the cover-up of child sex abuse allegations within the Catholic Church, Australia's top-ranking Cardinal George Pell admitted Monday.

Pell, speaking at an inquiry by Victoria's parliament into child sex abuse in the state, denied being personally involved in the cover-up of paedophile priests, but said it was clear it happened.

"The primary motivation would have been to respect the reputation of the church," he told the inquiry into the abuse of children by religious and non-government bodies.

"There was a fear of scandal."

Pell, one of eight cardinals selected by Pope Francis to advise him on reforming the Catholic Church's opaque administration, was speaking on the final day of the probe.

It has already heard that about 620 children were criminally abused by Catholic clergy from the 1930s onwards.

Victims, including children as young as seven or eight who were raped by priests, have told of their experiences at the hearing, which comes ahead of a national royal commission into institutional responses to child sex abuse.

"I am fully apologetic and absolutely sorry," Pell, who is Archbishop of Sydney and formerly archbishop of Melbourne, said at the start of his evidence.

"That is the basis for everything which I'll say now."

Last week Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart told the inquiry the church had been slow to act against paedophile priests and Pell admitted it had dealt with child sex abuse "very imperfectly".

"I would agree that we've been slow to address the anguish of the victims and dealt with it very imperfectly," he said.

The Catholic Church in Australia, as in other parts of the world, has endured a long-running controversy over its response to past abuses by priests.

Pell said the church had been aware of the emerging issue of sex abuse from the late 1980s, but had failed to comprehend the scale of the problem.

"If we'd been gossips, which we weren't… we would have realised earlier just how widespread this business was," he said.

"I don't think many, if any, persons in the leadership of the Catholic Church knew what a horrendous widespread mess we were sitting on."

Pell said the fact that paedophile priests had been moved to other parishes had had disastrous consequences.

"There's no doubt about it that lives have been blighted," he said. "There's no doubt about it that these crimes have contributed to too many suicides."

As well as the Victoria and national investigations, there is also a special commission of inquiry in New South Wales into similar allegations of abuse in the Hunter Valley north of Sydney.

    • Robbie Rogers, Openly Gay Soccer Player, Makes Historic L.A. Galaxy Debut

Robbie Rogers #14 of Los Angeles Galaxy takes the field.

      By Chris Greenberg

In the 77th minute of a regular-season Major League Soccer match between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening, Robbie Rogers made history.

The 26-year-old midfielder entered the game as a substitute for the Galaxy, becoming the first active openly gay male athlete to compete in a U.S. professional team sport.

Rogers came out in February in an emotional note on his personal website. In that same post, he also announced his decision to "step away" from the game. With a smile on his face and the No. 14 on his back, he stepped back on to the field on Sunday evening. The crowd at the Home Depot Center welcomed him with a loud cheer.

The reaction on social media among fellow players, fans and media was similarly positive.

Thanks to a first-half hat trick by Robbie Keane, the Galaxy were in total control of the game before Rogers took the field. The reigning MLS champions would roll to a 4-0 win, with Rogers completing all three of his passes. After the win, Rogers' focus appeared to be on his team's performance rather than his historic appearance.

"The most important thing is today we got three points," Rogers told ESPN during a postgame interview. "This was a huge game for us. It's a Western Conference game. The guys just played amazing. Robbie was clinical in front of goal and it was a pleasure to watch. They made it easy for me."

    • Scott Thorson: How Liberace Protected His 'Big Secret' in the Homophobic '50s

By Scott Thorson | The Wrap

The '50s, like the decades leading up to them, were an intensely homophobic period. Muscle cars and macho men were the order of the day. Although Lee knew that many of Hollywood's most famous and desirable men were gay or bisexual, none of them dared reveal the truth.

Lee confessed to me that he began dating women to suppress the growing rumors about his own sexuality. If anyone dared to question his masculinity, he needed to be able to flaunt pictures of his latest girlfriend.

He had no trouble getting all the dates he wanted and he gloried in escorting well-known entertainers to parties, getting his picture taken with Susan Hayward, Gale Storm, Rosemary Clooney, Mae West, and Judy Garland. Mae was the only one of his so-called lady friends I actually met. As they say in Texas, Mae was a hoot! She and Lee were an unpredictable twosome who enjoyed trying to outdo each other's outrageousness.

The girl he almost married didn't compare to Mae when it came to nerve. JoAnn Del Rio, a Las Vegas dancer, had good looks and a sweet personality. Undoubtedly the entire Liberace family heaved a sigh of relief as they watched her relationship with Lee progress. For a while, it must have seemed as if Lee would finally settle down to a "normal" life and have a family.

Lee and JoAnn became engaged in 1953 and even set a date for a wedding – a year away. From all reports, Lee liked JoAnn a lot, a first for him when it came to women. He courted her with gifts of flowers and perfume, gifts that foreshadowed the truly extravagant presents he would later give his male lovers.

When it came to JoAnn, the problem was not that he didn't like her; it was that he still loved men. After Lee's death, JoAnn's father was reported to have claimed responsibility for ending the engagement because he knew Lee was gay. But Lee told me he never planned to walk down the aisle, with JoAnn or anyone else. His engagement served to squelch the rumors about his sexuality --period!

Many homosexual men enjoy relationships with women. There are a few who even come to love them, as friends or as temporary sexual partners. Not Lee! He had to forcibly control his dislike and distrust of most of the women he dated. He complained that all of them were too demanding, an opinion of females that he'd formed in childhood.

When I asked if he'd ever had sexual relations with a woman he told me he'd had a couple of experiences, but complained that the way women smelled revolted him. While dating JoAnn publicly, he confessed that he continued to have secret dates with young men. By the end of 1955, JoAnn Del Rio was just a footnote to Liberace's history.

The older Lee got, the more younger men appealed to him. In that regard, he was a Dracula who never wearied of the taste and touch of youth. By his 50s he preferred dating boys in their teens.

There have been rumors that Lee had an affair with Rock Hudson early in their careers. But Rock wasn't any more Lee's type than Lee was Rock's. The supposed affair never happened. In the years we were together, Lee never mentioned knowing Rock. Although hundreds of celebrities came to Lee's shows, Rock never made an appearance. The two men moved in completely different circles, socially and professionally.

However, the books I've read about Hudson's life reveal startling parallels to Lee's. Both men had been abandoned by their fathers and dominated by their mothers. As adults the two of them devoted a great deal of time and energy to creating a fictional personal history for public consumption.

Neither man could deal with anything distasteful -- an argument, the illness of a parent, getting rid of a lover -- and both used others to do their dirty work.

Lee never used male prostitutes. He was an intensely romantic man who preferred the thrill of the chase rather than the cold reality of a cash transaction. Young men eager to make a connection with a big show-business personality usually jumped at the chance for a date with him. He used his success, his fame as foreplay. If they pleased him he would keep them around for a while -- a week, a month, a year or two. If not, he would send them on their way with a gift, generous to friends who granted him favors.

During those first years of fame, he became even more skilled at leading a double life. Onstage he smiled sweetly and flirted with his fans. In private he built an enormous and expensive collection of pornography that he shared at all-male parties. Although the family never discussed Lee's sexual identity, they had to know he was gay. His mother may have known, too. But she undoubtedly thought there was nothing wrong with her son that the right woman couldn't cure.

Touring abroad gave him an occasional break from his problems. He said he felt safer, more free to be himself in countries where his name was not yet a household word. In the mid-'50s he was invited to play the famed London Palladium and he jumped at the offer. To be asked to perform there signaled Lee's arrival as a star of international magnitude. He would have other, greater thrills, but that first show at the Palladium ranked right up there with his first appearance in the Hollywood Bowl. London, he said, sounded like heaven. Before he returned to the States it was to feel more like hell.

Lee's enthusiastic British audiences were very much like the ones he attracted in the States -- mostly middle-aged, working- class housewives. He enjoyed a huge box-office success in Britain, but the critics united in attacking him. One columnist for the London Daily Press launched an all-out war, describing Lee as a "deadly, sniggering, snuggling, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love."

For the first time in his career Lee was publicly branded as gay, and it devastated him. He imagined himself stripped of his fame, success, wealth, and power -- all the things he'd worked so hard to achieve. He burned with impotent rage for days. In Vegas, where he had connections, he'd have known exactly how to handle the situation. He'd have used his influence, his power, or his dangerous friends. But in London he felt helpless. So he struck back in the only way he could. He sued.

Lee didn't care what the lawsuit cost in time, effort, or money. Money was surely no obstacle to the highest paid performer in the world. In the past he'd used his wealth to attract friendship and love. In England he used it as a tool to buy vindication and revenge.

Lee made up his mind to prove, for all time, that he wasn't gay, even if it meant bringing another woman into his life. This time she would be far better known than JoAnn Del Rio.

Sonja Henie  had been the world's premiere figure skater in the 1920s and '30s. She'd parlayed 10 world championships and three Olympic gold medals into an enormously successful show-business career. Blonde, blue-eyed, she had an attractive figure and, more important, a celebrity name.

Sonja was seven years older than Lee and her fame was waning when they met. I think mutual need drew them to each other. Together, they generated more publicity than either one could separately. The aging skater merited a lot of space in movie magazines and tabloids when she became the woman Liberace spent his evenings with.

Lee's acquaintances describe Sonja as a motherly type; but Lee told me they had an affair. If he was being honest -- and with Lee you could never be sure -- it would be his last relationship with a woman. After the London court case came to an end, Lee never again felt the need to camouflage his true nature by dating ladies.

In 1959 Lee was completely vindicated and his name cleared. On June 9, the New York Daily News ran an article under the headline, "I'm No Homo, Says Suing Liberace." Before the year ended he was completely vindicated; his name and reputation were freed of any blemish.

Lee's lawyers had managed a miracle. They'd actually convinced a judge and jury that black was white. Lee was awarded a $22,500 settlement. He gave every penny of it to charity.

From 1959 on Lee turned to the courts whenever he failed to get his way by other means. His lawyer soon found that handling Liberace's considerable legal affairs provided a lucrative livelihood. Given Lee's stubbornness, his power, and his money, he usually got what he wanted by simply wearing his opponents down. When Lee and I finally confronted each other in a court of law, the bitterly contested case dragged on for five years.

In the coming years Lee's vindication in the British courts would have one penalty. As America's social climate became increasingly liberal, other gays came out of the closet. Lee felt compelled to keep his silence.

"I can't admit a thing," he said, "unless I want to be known as the world's biggest liar."
