    • 'Gay Cure' App Claims To Help Users Find …

'Freedom From The Bondage Of Homosexuality'

      Huffpost Gay Voices

A new app claims to offer a 60-day "gay cure" that will teach users how to finally find "freedom from the bondage of homosexuality."

The app is from Setting Captives Free, a non-denominational ministry that purports to teach the biblical principles of freedom in Jesus Christ. The free app, which has been available on Google Play since the end of March, features ways to combat substance abuse and gambling, and also teaches users how to attain "sexual purity" with a lesson called "Door of Hope."

In the "Door of Hope" section, Setting Captives Free president Mike Cleveland explains:

First, let me just say that despite what you may have heard elsewhere, you do not have a "homosexual gene," nor were you born this way with no hope of freedom. You can be set free from the bondage of homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ and the cross! If you will apply the biblical principles found here, you can walk through the Door of Hope into a new life with Christ, free from sexual impurity and self-gratification.

"Friend, make no mistake about it, God calls homosexuality wicked and evil not an 'alternative lifestyle,'" the Day 5 lesson says. "If you're not there yet in your understanding of homosexuality, you must pray for the day when you see this sin the way God sees it. I would also encourage you to begin using these biblical terms as well, as opposed to 'alternative lifestyle.'"

An AllOut.org petition published on Wednesday calls for the removal of the app from both iTunes and Google Play. More than 60,000 people have signed on, and the app has since been removed from iTunes.

"It's a 60-day course that tells gay people they are not 'born this way' and offers to help them find 'freedom from the bondage of homosexuality,'" the petition says. "These so-called treatments can cause terrible harm to lesbian, gay, bi, and trans people, or anyone forced to try to change who they are or who they love."

A 23-year-old man who says he went through the "Door of Hope" course when he was just 13 told Queerty that the app exposed him to stories of pedophilia, demonic influences and a gay subculture that worships male genitalia. The experience was "very traumatic" for him, he told the site.

The group's board of directors rejects the criticism.

"Setting Captives Free is not against or opposed to any individual or group of people," the board members told The Huffington Post in an email. "We do, however, exist to offer hope and help to those people who want to be free of whatever is troubling their hearts, minds or lives, including homosexuality. Many in the homosexual community are enjoying their lifestyle; we have no issue with them. We do not contact them, malign them or persecute them in any way, nor would we do so."

The "Door of Hope" is supposed to help those "who feel trapped by homosexuality and who want a way out," they added. "We do not offer a cure as if homosexuality were a disease. We present a Way of Life — His name is Jesus. If homosexuals are unhappy with their current way of life; they have the right to pursue happiness and change if they wish."

"Those who oppose us cannot understand because they have not experienced the transforming power of the gospel," they said.

A new survey released Thursday by the support group Beyond Ex-Gay reveals harrowing personal experiences of people who have undergone controversial "conversion therapy." Respondents reported self-hatred, depression and even attempted suicides. In one case, a person described an attempted exorcism.

More than 75 percent of survey respondents said they left the "ex-gay movement" because it didn't make them straight. More than 90 percent said they felt harmed by the experience and 80 percent said they are still negatively affected by it.

    • SKorea's gay film maker in news over wedding plans

In this Wednesday, May 15, 2013 photo, South Korean movie director Kim Jho Gwangsoo, left, kisses with his partner Dave Kim during a news conference for their marriage in Seoul, South Korea.

Yahoo Movies News ~ By HYUNG-JIN KIM

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The first time a South Korean celebrity announced he was gay, in 2000, the reaction was quick and without empathy. Popular actor and entertainer Hong Suk-chon was banished from television and radio programs for three years, and he said in a talk-show interview this year that he regrets coming out.

In a legal sense, not much has changed since then for gays and lesbians in this deeply conservative country. They can't marry or enter into civil unions, and the law cannot effectively protect them from discrimination. But another celebrity's recent wedding announcement suggests they may be slowly winning the fight for public acceptance.

Movie director Kim Jho Gwangsoo surprised many last month by announcing he will symbolically tie the knot with his longtime male partner Sept. 7 in what would be the highest-profile ceremony of its kind in South Korea. He and Dave Kim envision a massive public event in Seoul with guests honoring their relations by donating money to build a center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Later they will try to get their marriage registered, and if they are rejected, as is expected, they intend to file a constitutional appeal.

"Doesn't the constitution stipulate that everybody is equal before it?" Kim Jho said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "We want (South Korea) to enter the stage of starting discussions on" same-sex marriage.

Online news outlets carried photos of the boyish-looking 48-year-old kissing his curly-haired, 28-year-old partner, and their names were among the most popular search words in portal sites for much of the day. Some conservative newspapers ignored the announcement, but there was little criticism of the couple in the media.

Kim Jho said he and his partner have not encountered anyone insulting them with anti-gay slurs, and there have been people on the street who encouraged them. "It's a delightful response," Kim Jho said.

"There was a time when we worried about our wishes to marry being revealed. But we ourselves feel now that times have changed," Kim Jho said.

On Saturday, the couple took center stage at Seoul's annual Korea Queer Festival. As they clasped hands, the crowd showered them with cheers and applause.

Analysts say the couple's announcement is the latest sign of a slow yet substantial change in how South Koreans view sexual minorities.

Several gay-themed movies and TV dramas have become hits and some male-to-female transgender entertainers have risen to stardom. More than 100 gay bars and nightclubs are now openly operating in downtown Seoul, according to a gay rights organization.

"The social exclusion level (on sex minorities) has declined a lot compared with when Hong Suk-chon came out … so chances for our society to embrace them have increased a lot," said Cho Hee-Yeon, a sociology professor at Seoul's Sungkonghoe University. "But South Korea still has a long way to go."

Anti-gay sentiments run deep through South Korean society amid a complex mix of several elements that include a large, vocal conservative Christian community; a deep-rooted Confucian heritage that has long put strains on open talks on sex-related topics; and rapid economic developments under past military-backed dictatorships that ignored the voices of minority groups.

A casebook published by activist groups and a lawyers' organization in 2011 showed dozens of reported cases of anti-gay discrimination, bullying and hate crimes in South Korean schools. In one case, a lesbian student jumped to her death after students poured hot soup on her head. In another, a teacher was accused of saying gays and lesbians should be stoned to death. The casebook also mentioned a questionnaire handed out by a school that was intended to sort out gay and lesbian students.

In April, two lawmakers were forced to withdraw two separate proposed comprehensive legislative bills aimed at preventing discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender and other factors after Christians and conservative activists launched vehement protests. South Korea currently has a broad human rights law that ostensibly protects gays and lesbians, but it has no mechanism to punish those who discriminate.

And while 14 countries and 12 U.S. states allow same-sex marriages, in South Korea that appears to be a distant dream for gay couples.

An April public survey by Gallup Korea showed that only one-fourth of South Koreans support same-sex marriage and 67 percent oppose it. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

"We absolutely oppose a same-sex marriage. ... The Bible describes it as a curse," said the Rev. Hong Jae Chul, president of the Seoul-based Christian Council of Korea, an alliance of conservative churches. "Homosexuality runs counter to the order of the creation."

Gill Wonpyong, a university physics professor who also works for the Seoul-based Coalition for Moral Sexuality, said homosexuality is "abnormal" and raised worries the anti-discrimination laws could allow schools to teach students that homosexual relations are normal and that criticizing them is wrong.

Anti-gay activists and conservative Christian groups said they have no plans to obstruct Kim Jho's September ceremony.

When the anti-discrimination laws were submitted, gay-rights opponent held street rallies, made hundreds of protest phone calls daily to lawmakers' offices and bombarded the website of the National Assembly with about 100,000 anti-legislation messages.

Last week, an alliance of anti-legislation civic groups placed a full-page ad in major newspapers announcing a boycott of the MBC television network over a program the group says supports homosexuality and anti-discrimination laws.

Hong, the formerly blacklisted actor, said in his interview in February that he still regrets coming out because other men are reluctant to get into relationships with him, thinking that they would be outing themselves by appearing in public with him.

A broad anti-discrimination law is a goal of the conservative government of new President Park Geun-hye. Park's Justice Ministry said in emailed answers to questions posed by the AP that it is reviewing such legislation and hasn't determined whether the legislation will include sexual orientation.

Kim Jho and Dave Kim stepped into that political sea with tuxedoes on at their May 15 news conference. It was the first time that Dave Kim, CEO of film company Rainbow Factory, had appeared publicly as Kim Jho's partner, though they've been together for nearly nine years.

"The most important reason why I stood here is because of my infinite love and trust toward director Kim Jho, who was always with me when I had good things and sad things and when I came out over the past nine years. I feel a bit shy to say this," Kim said at the news conference, smiling.

Kim Jho has directed several gay-oriented films that were favorably reviewed though not commercially successful, and more than 10 mainstream movies, including a few box-office hits.

He said that although he realized he was gay when he was 15, it took him another 15 years to accept it. He dated women, went to church and joined a weightlifting club and even a gang, all to try to feel heterosexual, but nothing worked. He considered killing himself many times.

"I told myself, 'You are dirty. You cannot carve your way, you cannot live a normal life and you cannot achieve your dream.'"

Eventually, he met another gay man and learned how to accept himself. His wedding day is intended to make it easier for others to travel the same road.

"I think people with positive views can change the world, not those with negative views," he said.

    • Michele Bachmann Figures Why Not, Introduces Homosexual-Beheading Bill

      ![](https://www.gaytorrent.ru/bitbucket/700 a.jpg)

      The Onion

WASHINGTON—Saying that she’ll be gone soon anyway so she might as well, Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann introduced H.R. 259: The Homosexual Decapitation Act, which would give the United States government legal authority to behead any gay U.S. Citizen. “I figured, eh, why not; I’m not running for reelection in 2014, I have nothing to lose, and I’ve been sitting on this bill for nearly five years, so what’s it going to hurt to finally throw it into the mix,” Bachmann said of the piece of legislation which, if passed, would create Homosexual Decapitation Centers throughout the country where handcuffed gay people would be taken to have their heads chopped off. “I’m also planning on introducing a Hang All The Muslims bill, the Abortion Doctor Castration Act, and H.R. 264, which would allow me to rip the throat out of any citizen who doesn’t believe in creationism. Rip it out with my teeth.” At press time, every new piece of legislation introduced by Bachmann had received more than 10 Republican cosponsors.

Bakery That Refused to Make Gay Couple’s Wedding Cake Speaks Out Amid Threats, Economic Woes

      The Blaze

      Billy Hallowell

In February, Aaron and Melissa Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, an Oregon-based bakery, found themselves at the center of a media firestorm after refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple’s ceremony. Nearly four months later, the small business continues to receive threatening and harassing phone calls and e-mails, as they grapple with the ongoing fall-out from their controversial decision. This week, they spoke with TheBlaze about the ongoing drama.

It was Jan. 17 when a mother and her daughter showed up at the shop and chatted with Aaron about purchasing a cake; their meeting was short-lived, though. Upon learning that the wedding was for two women, the baker purportedly politely declined service to the women, citing his Christian faith. Aaron apologized, but stayed true to his values.

As we previously reported, the mother and daughter became disgusted by the refusal and walked out. Ten minutes later, the baker told TheBlaze that the frustrated mom came back into Sweet Cakes by Melissa and challenged Aaron’s decision not to serve the couple. Again, he maintained his stance and cited the Bible; the mother allegedly disagreed again and stormed out — and a discrimination complaint was later filed against the shop.

“February 1st or 2nd, I got a letter from the Oregon DOJ, saying I was under investigation for a possible discrimination complaint,” he said, noting that the grievance has still, months late, not materialized, as it was apparently improperly filed (it is unclear whether an official investigation will continue or whether a new inquiry will be launched).

When asked why he refused to provide a cake to the couple, Aaron was candid, saying that he and Melissa don’t provide baked goods for same-sex weddings.

“Obviously, with my Christian values, I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,” he said. “I take it to be a religious event. … God ordained it.”

HOW THEIR DECISION HAS IMPACTED BUSINESS

While Aaron and Melissa told TheBlaze that the community initially rallied around them — a collective action that helped spark additional business — that support has since waned. In place of the extra business, the Kleins regularly receive (especially in light of renewed media coverage) virulent e-mails and phone calls.

From claims that Aaron should be shot to one apparent threat that he be raped, the hate and angst being thrown the Klein family’s way is certainly serious in nature. Some have even wished for the couple’s five children to be stricken with illness. Aaron and Melissa shared a number of the e-mails with TheBlaze.

“You stupid bible thumping, hypocritical b**ch.  I hope your kids get really, really, sick and you go out of business,” reads one e-mail.

“Here’s hoping you go out of business, you bigot. Enjoy hell,” reads another.

But it’s not just rhetoric that the husband and wife have encountered as a result of their refusal to provide the cake. They claim that their wedding vendors have been “badgered and harassed” until they refuse to do business with Sweet Cakes by Melissa.

As a result, the business’ wedding cake orders this summer are down dramatically from the past. Plus, some individuals have canceled their previously-planned cakes in the wake of the controversy.

“My attorney likens this — he calls it economic terrorism,” Aaron said. “These people, they have literally tried to cut any business ties off through harassment.”

The impact has even been seen among customers who continue coming to the shop. Some of them, despite still ordering from Sweet Cakes by Melissa, are hesitant to let others know where the delicious baked goods are coming from.

“Another thing lately that we’ve been noticing happening — we’ll have the people who support us,” said Melissa. “They’ve come in and ordered stuff, but they don’t want us to put our sticker on the box. They don’t want people to know they got their stuff with us.”

She went on to say that the situation has been difficult, stressful and perplexing, especially considering that the business may end up shuttering due, in part, to the economic impact that the cake fiasco has had. Melissa said that the family has been working hard to keep negative emotions at bay and she called the challenge a “trial,” but said that, “God has really been helping us through this.”

THEIR MESSAGE FOR GAYS AND LESBIANS

Contrary to the image that has been advanced in media, Aaron and Melisa told TheBlaze that they love everyone and are not out to discriminate or target a specific group of people. Their decision, they argue, was merely one based on their own theological views and their penchant for providing services that coincide with these standards.

Melissa said that she would want gays and lesbians to know that she “loves all people” and that she would do anything for an individual in need.

“I would do anything for a homosexual. I would give the shirt off my back,” she said. “I’ve had gay friends, I’ve had gay people in my life.”

The issue of the cake, she maintains, was one that had to do with her own convictions. And she said that she would have no problem respecting the beliefs of others, particularly those with whom she disagrees, so she seemed perplexed as to why her own views, in this regard, aren’t being given the same credence.

“I’m a Christian. I wish that everyone could be saved — everyone could be a believer. We have a want for everyone to know Christ,” Aaron added. “I did what I did because I would not want to support somebody in something that would be a bad decision.”

THE FAMILY DECRIES THE MOST RECENT MEDIA SCANDAL

An article published this week in the Willamette Week, a local paper in Oregon, has reignited the gay cake controversy for the Klein family. Since it is illegal to refuse service based on sexual orientation in Oregon, the outlet seemingly attempted to trap Sweet Cakes by Melissa in a lie by pretending to order cakes for events that would violate Christian doctrine.

After calling the Klein’s business and one other bakery that is also under fire for refusing to provide a cake for a gay wedding, Willamette Week claims that Aaron and Melissa are guilty of hypocrisy. Here’s a portion of the article:

We wondered what other requests these cakemakers would decline to honor. So last week five WW reporters called these two bakeries anonymously to get price quotes for other occasions frowned upon by some Christians. Surprisingly, the people who answered the phone at each bakery were quite willing to provide baked goods for celebrations of divorces, unmarried parents, stem-cell research, non-kosher barbecues and pagan solstice parties.

We later contacted both bakeries to ask about these inconsistencies. Regentin declined to comment beyond asking whether she had been taped (she had not).

Sweet Cakes owners Melissa and Aaron Klein were upset that we “would even try to entrap a business” and contacted conservative talk-show host Lars Larson.

But the Kleins claim that this simply isn’t the case and that they would not provide cakes for divorces or other related events that would contradict Christian teaching (plus, the stem cell mention is odd, because Christians don’t oppose stem cell research; instead, many oppose embryonic stem cell research — a more specific and controversial form).

When TheBlaze first reached Melissa by phone on Thursday, she was frustrated by the new-found media coverage, claiming that it was rooted in lies and that she was dumbfounded that media outlets could publish things that were overtly untrue.

“I feel like all these media people — they have not gotten our story — our actual story. And what we’re really about and why we said no,” she said. “Everyone is looking at us like we’re these hateful monsters that don’t want to serve gay people.”

In a separate interview on Friday, she made it clear that her shop would not provide cakes for divorces or other related events and that she wouldn’t even be willing to write profanity on a cake.

“For me, personally … It’s my morals, it’s my beliefs it’s my convictions,” she added.

As for Aaron’s take on the matter, he said that neither he nor Melissa answered the calls that were reportedly taken from Willamette Week reporters. And he believes that there may be more strategic reasons behind the publication of the article.

“As far as this whole issue … the only thing I can figure, the idea behind running an article in that way is not only to rally these activists … but also to try to isolate us from the people who support us,” Aaron said. “It seems like it’s definitely trying to push an agenda and put us out of business.”

This prospect, of course, is entirely possible, as the bakery is struggling following the cake debacle.

It’s unclear what will happen next, as the lesbian couple is reportedly still considering its legal options. Regardless of what the government decides, though, Aaron says that he and his wife will stick by their convictions and that their religious freedom is protected under both Oregon and federal constitutions.

“I can say I don’t want to take part in something that violates my religious beliefs. If they want to shut me down because of it, then they could shut me down,” he told TheBlaze.

    • Obama Proclaims June As LGBT Pride Month

      TPMLivewire

Perry Stein 5:58 PM EDT, Friday May 31, 2013

President Barack Obama officially proclaimed the month of June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month.

In his proclamation, the president wrote:

"This year, we celebrate LGBT Pride Month at a moment of great hope and progress, recognizing that more needs to be done. Support for LGBT equality is growing, led by a generation which understands that, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." In the past year, for the first time, voters in multiple States affirmed marriage equality for same-sex couples. State and local governments have taken important steps to provide much-needed protections for transgender Americans.

My Administration is a proud partner in the journey toward LGBT equality. We extended hate crimes protections to include attacks based on sexual orientation or gender identity and repealed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." We lifted the HIV entry ban and ensured hospital visitation rights for LGBT patients. Together, we have investigated and addressed pervasive bullying faced by LGBT students, prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Federal housing, and extended benefits for same-sex domestic partners. Earlier this year, I signed a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in the implementation of any VAWA-funded program. And because LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration is implementing the first-ever Federal strategy to advance equality for LGBT people around the world.

We have witnessed real and lasting change, but our work is not complete. I continue to support a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, as well as the Respect for Marriage Act. My Administration continues to implement the Affordable Care Act, which beginning in 2014, prohibits insurers from denying coverage to consumers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which addresses the disparate impact of the HIV epidemic among certain LGBT sub-communities. We have a long way to go, but if we continue on this path together, I am confident that one day soon, from coast to coast, all of our young people will look to the future with the same sense of promise and possibility. I am confident because I have seen the talent, passion, and commitment of LGBT advocates and their allies, and I know that when voices are joined in common purpose, they cannot be stopped."
