Cuervos, I would gladly choose both your THIS and your THAT over the last RE cinema feature film.  Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was yet another franchise that went one film too far for the sake of $$$.  As much as I love the first two RE films, Final Chapter was dreary to look at and very predictable. Imho, of course.

THIS or THAT:  Lunch (and maybe more) with Ben Affleck or Matt Damon?

Smile – Jay-Z ft. Gloria Carter

This is Jay-Z's loving tribute to his mom, Gloria Carter, who came out as lesbian in mid-life.  Even if rap is not your cup of tea, the video is excellent and more like a short film.  Gloria has a spoken-word appearance around the 6:15 mark of the video.

      @DCLXVI:

I hate trivial stuff, graduations, birthday celebrations… but I feel kinda giddy. :cheesy2:

You should feel proud, DCLXVI.  People have "regular birthdays" whether they like them or not.  And in every developed country, you will graduate once, or several times, in the educational system – some of those are obligatory, as well.

But... electing to spend a year on GT in the pursuit of fine cinema, and chit chat with some of the greatest minds to ever tap a keyboard with their one free hand -- now that's something quite special.  Congratulations and many happy returns!

And as long as we're on the road...

      Strange Fruit

      _Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop_

Known by many from Billie Holliday, but my preferred rendition of this wrenching song is by Nina Simone…

How about the U.S. as the only country with an annual horse race where the women spectators traditionally prance around in all manner of eccentric hats while swigging vile mint juleps?

That was the Kentucky Derby, held today!

Bronski Beat by a nose (today was the Kentucky Derby, which I'll be using in your other thread shortly).

For all the bombast of FGTH, I am reminded of the quiet power of certain BB songs like It Ain't Necessarily So:

      _It ain't necessarily so
      It ain't necessarily so
      The things that you're liable
      To read in the Bible
      It ain't necessarily so

David was small but oh my
David was small but oh my
      He shot Goliath
      Who lay down and dieth
Little David was small but oh my

Jonah he lived in a whale
Jonah he lived in a whale
He made his home in that fishes abdomen
Jonah he lived in a whale

Moses was found on a stream
Moses was found on a stream
Floated on water old Pharaoh's daughter
Fished him she says from that stream

      It ain't necessarily so
      It ain't necessarily so
      They tell all your children
      The devil he's a villain
      It ain't necessarily so_

At first my mind went to Bette Davis, and I thought it to be a strange comparison.  :faint:

In any event, I'll take Bette Midler over Babs any day.  To be fair, I have only seen Bette in person (Hello, Dolly! on Broadway last year).  Both ladies absolutely rule the stage with their presence, but I prefer the warmer, bawdier style of the Divine Miss M.

(Not that Bette doesn't have diva moments.  There was no ice allowed in our drinks at the theatre, so as not to distract from her concentration, lol.)

THIS or THAT:  New Wave-era bands ABC, or Depeche Mode?

Fine.  If I can stretch the topic parameters just a bit, I spent a sabbatical in England, and they have Swan Uppers, who I have seen at work and are said to be unique to the country.

With some help from Google, I learned that Middlesex, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire still have this swan upping tradition, although who knows how much longer it will continue to exist.  Simply put, these people count the number of local swans. They report that number, and whether any of the swans have injuries.

      @Cuervos626:

      I demand pic related.

Are you asking that every response have an attached photo?  I have spent a half-hour trying to deliver anything related to the U.S. – pic or no pic -- and I am shooting blanks.  What a pity the donkey pics would be against the site Rules.   :crazy2:

This is a more difficult topic than it first appears.

As a native Floridian I must go with Key Lime Pie, yummy tartness, graham cracker crust, and always a creamy yellow color – if it is green, you're being played.

    • RE: Jesus, Deer, Leather.

You tempt me into one more deer-inclusive joke….

Two lawyers were out hunting when they came upon a pair of tracks.  They stopped and examined the tracks closely.

The first lawyer announced, "Those are deer tracks.  It's deer season, so we should follow the tracks and find our prey."

The second lawyer responded, "Those are clearly elk tracks, and elk are out of season.  If we follow your advice, we'll waste the day."

Each attorney believed himself to be the superior woodsman, and they both held bitterly to their opinions.

They were still arguing when the train hit them.

    • Jesus, Deer, Leather.

I like Jesus but he loves me, so it's awkward.

Two deer walk out of a gay bath house. One of them turns to the other and says, "I can't believe I blew forty bucks in there."

About 90 percent of women say they don't like men who wear leather pants.  This works out perfectly, since 100 percent of men who wear leather pants don't like women.

      @JohnAllenson:

I must have seen Amy Sedaris in SOMETHING but she's left no impression.

I hope you have an opportunity to check Amy out in her earlier, absurd and raunchy Comedy Central work, Strangers with Candy, and that your cable provider carries TruTV, which just finished airing season 1 of her trippy show, At Home with Amy Sedaris.

And I'll pick Maupin on the (I know, expected) strength of Tales of the City.  In truth, I need to access more of Leavitt's work.

    • RE: To Tattoo Asian Guys or Not Tattoo Asian Guys

Some time ago I bought a full-color photo book, The Japanese Tattoo by Sandi Fellman.  Included pictorials of regular Japanese men and women, some Yakuza with full-body work, and if I recall, a few penis tattoos.

So I guess you know where I stand on that topic!
