    • RE: What is with the hideous category icons?

@cuppednoodle I'm not certain the Bear and Twinks image directly relate to the categories they represent?

For some categories I would prefer illustrations than photographs as it's easier to understand universally, eg. a generic book illustration rather than a GT cover since it's not a globally accessible publication. Same idea with images for TV/Episodes and Themed Movies. Using these, we're assuming everyone who accesses the site worldwide intuitively knows what the publication/show is. In addition to the site not having multi-language functionality for these icons, having as universally understood images would be simplest to assist as many users as possible who do not read/speak English fluently.

But they didn't? They went from SFUSD VAPA to SFUSD Arts Department. I'm not sure where you've got the replacement from?

I would argue no, this change cannot be named racist of itself because it doesn't have an effect of any proficient English speakers (proficient here being at least intermediate to high intermediate equivalent in English skill assessments). The change lowers the bar of entry into understanding the terms, and everyone benefits.

Think of it as universal design, such as the large power door button plates for wheelchair users and ramps. It lowers the barrier to access, at very little cost to able-bodied people.

I've outlined what I believe is the underlying connection of this to the paper and institutionalized racism, so I won't delve deeper into it again. I will concede it is purely my speculation, but it works to dismantle at least a small item should new Americans want to understand and participate in the education system.

Off topic: The field of education (and many other professional fields, for that matter) are absolutely TERRIBLE with the amount of jargon used. Pretty frustrating for newbies since one would need a complete separate lexicon to decode what is being discussed!

      Edit: defining proficiency

TBH I thought the intention was to make less jargon and making navigation of the system easier for non-native English speakers. The director clearly indicates this move as making it more accessible while achieving their anti-racist policy.

The origin of said intention is really stemming from the author's quoted words: "our culture perpetuates racism when things continue to be written down in a certain way," which distills the relationship between the use of language (in this case acronym jargon) to enforce barriers (jargon increases difficulty to understand terms to understand and participate in the system, also requiring one to visit a special section for complete definitions, thus adding additional layer of technological barrier), ergo perpetuating institutional racism.

I think the intentions are there to lower barriers, just poorly explained how the connections work.

This is gonna go off topic BUT I need to point out at the inconsistencies of your back story. You claim you relocated to China 6 years ago and is from the United States; you're currently seeking a green card for China. However I see you posting in the Chinese forums and what you say indicates you're a Chinese national.

Your posts are literally what every 50-cent army posts and comes direct from the "wolf warrior" policy playbook.

You have every right to participate in the discussion but I am pretty sure you're posing as an American national and I am absolutely against POSING as such when you are not.

      edit: grammar

@bc22 That is a good question! I have no idea; I don't know their legal system well enough to say.

But I would assume, there could be ramifications if they choose not to pay and get locked out due to non-compliance in Europe. That would certainly hurt their business as there are plenty more alternative platforms.

      @raphjd

bi4smooth has not labelled himself as 'good' as you've mentioned. He merely made his position clear on what he believes, and defining it specifically. He also did not call you a CTer.

Can you define "what the liberals are doing" for me? This is rather ambiguous for such a discussion.

I won't go into the example comparison you've provided as it has been addressed.

I assume "summer of love" you're referring to the BLM movement this past summer? By far the majority of protests across the US were peaceful. I cannot guarantee everyone who attended wanted a peaceful protest, but many were self-policing trying to ensure the peaceful protests were not hijacked by those who wanted violence.

The ones that did turn into a riot and looting occurred? I oppose it as well. Violence is not the answer and it begets more violence. HOWEVER, that being said, you can only peacefully protest for so long before frustration takes over, and I feel this is where MLK was and is truly a beacon. 60 years after, systemic racism continues to permeate society. It's not to say change hasn't happened, but it is a work in progress and progress is slow AF and not as much progress as many would have liked.

I have not come across discussion where some are calling for an end free speech. I don't think anyone is wanting that. However, there is a difference as free speech ends when you threaten harm or your intent is to harm.

@bi4smooth my guess is possibly conspiracy theorist-er?

    • RE: New York undercounted C-19 deaths

@raphjd Yes, I can comfortably stand by what I said in my previous post.

I will have to agree with @bi4smooth's point on anyone disagreeing with you =/= conservative and therefore a 'liberal,' and the way this word has been used.

One has to only take a look at the topic headlines in the Politics forum to get a sense of how much it's an echo chamber.

Side comment: It's baffled me at the way "Conservative" and "Liberal" labels have automatically assumed the worst in the other person during discussion by bundling other types of policy and thought, where "liberal" values are much more found in "Conservative" policies, and vice versa.

I don't believe @bi4smooth's latest post contained any intent of indicating moral superiority?

Merely stating what he believes and does not believe in and defining them clearly/explicitly.

    • RE: How do u make ur milk taste sweeter?

@coolcoolone pineapple and pineapple juice works for me, but it is not a fast process.

I drank 1 glass a day for 2 weeks to have a more noticeably effect. There was some difference after a week but not much.

I've heard spicy foods aren't great if you're wanting to make it sweeter/better tasting.

    • Norway to fine dating app Grindr $11.7M over privacy breach

They are served a draft decision of a fine worth 10% of the company's global annual revenue, totalling to $11.7M USD.

Quoted in the Guardian: "Grindr argued that sexual orientation, a specially protected category of data, was not exposed by selling its users’ data, since some of them may be straight. That argument was rejected by the Norwegian authorities, who noted that the app explicitly markets itself as “exclusively for the gay/bi community”."

      https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/jan/26/grindr-fined-norway-sharing-personal-information

That aside, I wish laws around fining would move and reform to fine people/companies in proportion to their income or net worth/revenue as a serious deterrent for multinationals or the super wealthy.

    • RE: European Countries, Ranked From Worst to First

Ughhhhh I have a love hate relation with these type of list-icles. Love their easy to read, but hate the American-centric criticisms of this article.

TBH, each country deserves 2-6 months of properly slowly discovering and enjoying the time there. Short period stays aren't enough!

I really enjoyed the Vatican, but I also picked to visit in the late afternoon/early evening. No crowds, wide vistas of the entire plaza, and no lines to visit inside!

Monaco was…. severely disappointing. I did a day trip there from Nice during a 3 week solo European tour. Was bored out of my mind after visiting the casino.

Lived in the UK for 2 years in South London. Thankfully food wasn't boring because I hung out in the more immigrant heavy neighbourhoods. Weather is pretty miserable in the winter, that's true, but I did find people friendly, despite the stereotype and the fact of making local friends was a difficult task.

Spent a few days in Malta (read: Valletta), it's absolutely gorgeous and lovely. Being a vegetarian, holidaying on an island nation is not without it's difficulties, but that's on me.

Switzerland was too expensive for my liking. Gorgeous and beautiful, but... oh so effing expensive.

Czechia (really only Prague) was great enough for me, despite the large crowds. Must return to explore more (and maybe meet one of the Bel Ami boys?)

France was fantastic. All the museums, art galleries, and the la belle vie elements I could ask for.

Vienna was probably one of the most breathtaking cities. All that old empire grandeur continues to impress.

Germany was great, and at the time, vegetarianism was picking up so lots of choices were available (albeit more expensive). The guys were hella cute, hella adventurous and keen to have some public fun  >:D

Italy was worth every penny I saved for a separate 3 week trip. Still not enough time!

Amsterdam is fun, but other cities deserve love too!

Barcelona was too overcrowded but I prefer it over Madrid. Missed out on visiting the Southern coast, must return in the future 🙂

Denmark was fantastic. Would for sure visit again. Have a super hot story of my time in Copenhagen.

    • RE: How captivity saved these animals from extinction

Captivity programs to repopulate critically endangered species are absolutely fantastic. Although the main ones we are aware of are all animals. We have no idea of the impact from the possible extinction of numerous other critically endangered plants, insects, and microorganisms that aren't as cute or marketable.

We simply have too much of an impact and effect on our surroundings to the point we're likely going to drive our own extinction.

      Absolutely 🙂

The official stance was that masks be worn at all official events, but no social distancing is required.

It has been 200+ days since the last case of local transmission.

Taking decisive action early on was what saved the island from another epidemic from occurring there.
