Why is this interesting?
First - under Geneva convention, he has no rights. He figures he could be shot on the spot - which he isn't.
In his mind, Russians will be nicer if he's American. So, he tells them he is.
Think about that. He denies what he is - he tries to exploit virtue (as perceived or imagined, by him) of being American. Wow, dude. OK.
As mercenary invader of Russia territory, he goes on to Russia prison.
