OMG - my Gaydar is non-existent! I'm generally clueless about other people in groups.
Case in point:
In 2014, I attended a party - a mixed party: gay/straight, male/female, old/young - and there were about 50-70 people there. I was still at the end of a 4-year marathon divorce process, but i was "livin the single life" and made it clear to several people at the party that I was "available"... Nonetheless, I went home alone 
2 days later, I got a text from an unknown number. This guy says we met at the party, and that another person there gave him my number. He wanted to have dinner. I wasn't sure WHO this guy was, but there was this dreamy 55 y/o guy there I had had my eye on. He too had kids, but he was financially well off and retired... (I was struggling financially because of the divorce). He was looking forward to traveling and "enjoying his life to the fullest"! Anyway, we had chatted briefly, but he had "moved on" and started chatting up a group of very young guys... message received.
But, now I wasn't so sure! The thing was: I was certain his name was Richard, and the caller's name was David. But, I'm awful with names, so I went on the date.
Instead of 55 y/o Richard, this beautiful 26 y/o ebony God sits down at the table, says HE is David, and he was so glad I agreed to see him. Well, I did NOT go home alone that night...
David, being much younger, was still a very active "socialite" in the scene of Tampa Bay's Gay Life... we were invited to parties, and David liked to go out dancing (I'm an absolutely horrid dancer!)... On MOST nights, David would point out guys who HE SAID were checking me out...
The romantic thing would be to say "I only had eyes for David", and while that is true, the fact is: I was as oblivious to their presence or interest in me as I was to David at that first party!
Hence: I HAVE NO GAYDAR! 
PS: Sadly, David passed away in 2017 as a result of a medical missed diagnosis. My heart remains, to this day, broken...

I don't know - I'm not really following that story closely, for reasons at the END of this posting...
What I do know is that the organization stands for Conservative Ideals - many of which I agree with - but didn't "sell their soul" to authoritarianism or turn a blind eye to essentially treason in exchange for a Supreme Court judge or two (or three!).
I also know that I'm not one to throw around guilt by association claims or accusations.
If I did, most of the largest Evangelical Christian organizations in the US (not to mention the Catholic Church) would have been burned to the ground by now for the sins of their past leaders... Sins also against children

That is somewhat less true than you know. We were just individuals - and sometimes the cops came calling... different sysops handled things differently.
I actually helped organize other local sysops (gay, straight, non-sexual BBSes all together) to help standardize how we did things (learn from each other). Many of us (BBS Owners) would get requests by police from time to time! They were NOT oblivious!
Brevard County Sheriffs knew me and knew I was happy to help when it was a case of violence, or theft, or the like... but NOT willing to help in (the thankfully rare) case of "outing someone" (mostly they didn't care if you were gay, but sometimes I'd get subpoenaed in a divorce case (trying to prove infidelity, esp same-sex infidelity) or some lame indecency suit... we did NOT comply with those, and I had some limited ACLU support in that.)
Honestly, the only cases where we (BCSD and I) truly butted heads were the prostitution cases... I wouldn't support giving up data for that.
So, by way of examples:
The point is, though, some SysOps would comply completely with the police, and in some jurisdictions, those were fishing expeditions - trying to "out the queers" and charge them with indecency for posting nude pictures!

I used to run/host a 6-line BBS system for LGBTQ (just "gays and lesbians" back then!) on the Space Coast of Florida.

Come now - do you really think George Floyd is the first black man killed at the hands of police? What made that case blow up was solely the fact that it was captured - in its entirety - on video, and then made public. Plus the fact that it took over 8-minutes for the man to die - slowly - as the policeman showed complete indifference.

IMHO, we need to re-think what we want out of our Police force... Do we want Robo-Cop (who shoots first and asks questions later)? Or, do we want Adam-12: (Reference to a 1960's and 70's police drama about 2 LA police officers who routinely went out of their way to help people, catch the really bad guys, and sometimes give people who need it a break.)??
