    • RE: Is the Confederate Flag a Symbol of Racism or History?

I hope you realize that whites weren't the only slave owners in the US.   Plenty of blacks also owned slaves.

Chattel slavery came to the new world through Anthony Johnson (former indentured slave himself) when he refused to let go of his indentured slave John Casor.     It was a black man that gave the new world chattel slavery.

In 1705, Virginia declared that any non christian (Protestant) was a slave.   Race wasn't even mentioned.

I'd vote for Ann Richards for President, well before she turned 100.

    • RE: Is the Confederate Flag a Symbol of Racism or History?

I think some people wallow in oppression.

I converted a rapper from doing songs about black are oppressed to doing songs about black empowerment.    He'd never had an actual conversation with a white person who owns a business.    He went from doing songs about whitey refusing to give jobs to blacks to doing songs about staying in school and bettering yourself.

I see this situation being kinda the same.

Rather than focusing on actual oppression, people are getting butt hurt of some historical thing.

Despite what the Nazis did to gays, I don't wallow in oppression every time I see a Nazi symbol.  I don't wallow in the fact that when the Allies freed the concentration camps, gays were left there and later sent to a proper prison, while everyone else was released.  Maybe I should view all the symbols of the allies as oppression too.

    • RE: RULES for this section

      I want to clarify something.

When I post, I am posting as myself.

HOWEVER,  if my post looks like   :police: <insert text="" ""> :police: </insert>  then I am posting as the forum admin.

Of course, all posts in the rules section are forum admin posts

EDIT: This isn't the case anymore since we no longer have this ability in the current forum software.

    • RE: TEXAS: State House Votes To Allow Religious Adoption Agencies To Turn Away Gays

The difference is, a private business has to obey the laws of the land, while religious groups get to ignore them to suit their beliefs.

My dad used my inheritance to start a homeless shelter for men.   He got no tax money for it, but let's assume he did.

He could not discriminate in who he lets in and who he hires, but a religious homeless shelter can discriminate in who they let in and who they hire.   My dad couldn't force people to pray and attend church services, but a religious one can.

      ++++

Correct, there is no codified separation.  HOWEVER, it is clearly established in law through court rulings.

The separation of church and state ends when tax dollars are given to perform actions for the state.

    • RE: Christian Activist Smashes Pie Into Face Of Qantas CEO over Gay Marriage

Brands routinely take a stance on social issues.

Miller Beer (at least back in the 1980s and 1990s) were fully committed to LGBT equality and major sponsor of PRIDE events.

LEAR Industries was the 1st corp in the US to give LGBTs equal rights when it came to work benefits.    The share holders could have held a vote to prevent it, but they didn't.

    • RE: NOLA Mayor: Death Threats Won’t Stop Us From Taking Down Confederate Monuments

Clearly, there are some idiots here who think it's only treason if you lose.

George Washington, et al committed treason against the UK.

Jefferson Davis, et al committed treason against the US.

One is a hero and the other is a traitor.

Using this logic, 45% of voters in Scotland should be in prison for treason for voting for independence in 2014.

    • RE: TEXAS: State House Votes To Allow Religious Adoption Agencies To Turn Away Gays

LOL, you were the one trying to make it into a "christians can discriminate against everyone" type issue and I pointed out that the law was not specific to christians.    It allows ALL religions to discriminate against those they don't like.

Despite your lame attempt to label me as something or other,  I don't like laws like this based on equality.  I can't discriminate against believers (of any faith) but they can discriminate against me.

I also support the concept of "separation of church and state" and that includes NOT giving state funds to religious groups for any reason.

We see through your thinly veiled attempt to claim "muslims will be victimized" in that.  Of course muslims hate gays more than most other groups.

    • RE: TEXAS: State House Votes To Allow Religious Adoption Agencies To Turn Away Gays

Second, this law also applies to religious-based agencies that get state funding. It would also let agencies discriminate against Jews and Muslims, for that matter, as well as LGBT people.

It would allow jewish and muslim agencies to turn away those they don't like too.  So no discrimination there.

Sharia law is against gays and women, despite what SJWs tell you.

I'm still waiting for Higgs to come back and tell me all the muslim countries that are gay utopias.  He ran away from the thread after I asked him to name them.

Private property doesn't have the same rules.

If that preacher was standing on the sidewalk, then he has every right to do it.

If he followed the couple, then that is harassment, which is illegal.

BAMN is also a "progressive" group that advocates for violence.    They also advocate for selectively banning free speech.

    • RE: Liberals love violence, but only as long as it's their side doing it

No one has asked anyone here to apologize for the violence that someone else did.

All that has been asked is that liberals condemn the violence.

Violence is almost always wrong, especially when it's used to prevent the human rights of others, such as free speech.
