    • RE: Scotland officially bans free speech

      @homppeliboy

      Yes, the new law could easily be used to restrict speech, it includes the new offence of "stirring up hatred," which is an incredibly broad and undefined term to use.

      The Scottish Police Federation said the bill would result in officers "policing what people think or feel"

      The only Nazis I'm aware of in Scotland are the members of the SNP, luckily I'm not in Scotland or saying this would probably count as a hate crime under the new bill.

      It's amazing. Yesterday is the first time I even heard of this incident. Not only was he let off w/ just a fine, prior to the trial he was free on bail, as opposed to being forced into solitary confinement for months. And the FBI were kind enough to give him back his axe....we live in clown world.

    • RE: Florida to Enact "Don't Say Gay" Bill

      @flozen I don't see how it's transphobic to believe someone should not be taught about transitioning in grades k-3, I don't believe it has any place there. Sexual matters of any sort really have no place being taught in the elementary schools.

      When I was young I used to play with an easy bake oven, may have been slightly effeminate and didn't mind girls kissing me while other boys ran. I am happy now to be a gay man and have never had any desire to ever be a woman, but when I was an impressionable 6 year old I could've perhaps been convinced I did.

      Growing up gay, trans, even str8 can be hard enough as it is; we don't need severely misguided teachers messing up their heads further, the teachers may have the best of intentions but are not qualified to deal with issues such as these, raising the child is responsibility of the parents and the community- the school is there solely to educate.

      The truth is this bill shouldn't be necessary, because these issues should never be brought up in elementary school to begin with. However there are teachers out there who seem to believe they're on some type of woke mission- teachers need to teach, not preach or play therapist.

      @NF16 When you take into account the numbers on Florida you have to include the demographics of the population. You also have to take into account the economic impact; I'm in California and it has been devastating.

      The grooming I believe refers more to grooming them into transitioning rather than being gay.

      @gerggently He never covered up any deaths, unlike New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. No state has fared better during the pandemic than Florida, despite what you see on the news, look into the actual data rather than believing the mindless talking heads you see on tv.

      In addition, re: this bill

      Read it, it's not very long. It essentially protects parent's rights and does prohibit discussion of gender identity, but only for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

    • RE: Breonna Taylor | Just The Facts and Law

      I agree completely, Nate the Lawyer does a fantastic job laying out the facts and destroying the media narrative.

      In addition to being black, he's also a liberal, a lawyer, and a former police officer; his only agenda is the truth.

    • RE: The Associated Press (AP) is racist

      I agree with Raphjd on this one.  Discrimination of any kind based on race, even with good intentions at heart (not that I believe the AP has good intentions), is harmful and eventually leads to resentment and racism.

      If you read the article, many people take issue with it:
      "Some proponents believe that keeping white lowercase is actually anti-Black, saying it perpetuates the idea that whites are the default race"

      'Kwame Anthony Appiah, a philosophy professor at New York University, wrote in the Atlantic that capitalizing white would take power away from racists, since their similar use “would no longer be a provocative defiance of the norm.”'

      While capitalization, or non-capitalization, of any word is not the biggest problem right now- it can lead to it.  Many American's apparently feel racism is the biggest problem in the US/world today.  While it might not be the biggest issue, it's certainly high ranking.  Why add fuel to the fire?

      @ocpete:

      Who arrived in what became the United States in 1492?????  I know about the Mayflower and Jamestown, but both were significantly later.

      The Native Americans were obviously here before 1492 … Reread what you wrote...

      It was in response to this:

      The most dangerous immigrants arrived here in 1492.

      Of course the Native Americans were here thousands of years before.

      @royalcrown89:

      @ocpete:

      Nobody arrived here, in the United States in 1492.  People should be judged in the context of their own times.  Most native Americans were unfortunately killed by disease, diseases from the new world were also spread to Europe at the same time.  Christopher Columbus himself succumbed to syphilis.  The lack of any scientific understanding of the diseases on both sides of the Atlantic unfortunately enable this suffering.  Don't forget, the Europeans built their presence resistance to many of these diseases during the black plagues, when their population was decimated multiple times. The settlers who originally arrived in the United States were in territory claimed by the British crown and seeking greater freedoms and opportunities than they did at home.  They did so with charters from the crown and legally (internationally during the time period) emigrated to the what became the colonies and later the United States.

      "People should be judged in the context of their own times" is the biggest cop out EVER! Seriously? There was no atonement for the downright genocide and brutality committed by those savages who immorally came to this land and claimed it as their own. No atonement whatsoever. The descendants of that trash have no right to do what they are currently doing. This land is your land, right? You just don't know what Pandora's box has been opened in this country by electing that orange piece of crap as president and letting him put a white nationalist in charge of things in the White House. It's about to get very, very real here in terms of protesting and resistance. This has been a long time coming.

      Absolutely an idiotic argument.  The Americas would not have remained isolated for long.  Any contact with outsiders, whether it be Europeans, Africans, Asians, etc would have caused the same number of people killed due to disease.  The people who were born in this country have EVERY RIGHT TO BE HERE.  The people who came before us settled and created the United States into the greatest country in modern times.  We have absolutely made many mistakes, but I challenge you to name one country who has contributed as much to humanity as we have.

      What the F does any of this have to do w/ the election, you're all over the place.
