    • GOP Rep. Darryl Issa Flees To His Roof Rather Than Face Angry Constituents

      Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) stood on the roof of his district office in California on Tuesday as his protesting constituents gathered outside the building. Per Politico’s Jake Sherman, Issa was reportedly filming the protesters below as he looked on from his rooftop perch.

      Mike Levin, Issa’s Democratic opponent in the 2018 congressional race, tweeted both the rooftop picture and a photo of Issa talking to the “several hundred” gathered in front of his office. Levin claimed Issa “came out for 5 minutes but refused to engage with those across the street.” It wasn’t clear whether this happened before or after Issa decided to retreat to the roof.

    • Trump campaign likely didn't save documents

      The Trump campaign likely did not preserve documents and communications key to the law enforcement investigation into possible collusion between President Trump's associates and the Kremlin, Politico reported Saturday.

      Political campaigns, Politico noted, are typically not required to preserve emails on their private server for long windows of time, and most messages are deleted within 30 to 90 days, unless steps are taken to preserve them.

      What's more, the Trump campaign did not do much to establish a plan to maintain those communications, according to a former campaign aide.

      "You’d be giving us too much credit,” the former aide told Politico. "The idea of document retention did not come up. The idea of some formal structure did not come up."

      The White House itself is subject to more rigorous recordkeeping rules, and White House counsel Don McGahn directed staffers in February to preserve documents and other records that could be requested or used in ongoing federal investigations into Russian election meddling.

      But at issue for some White House staffers is the existence of encrypted apps, such as Signal and Confide, that automatically delete messages. Failure to maintain certain records, according to Politico, could potentially lead to legal trouble.

      U.S. law requires individuals to preserve documents, emails and other records once they become aware that such material could be pertinent to an investigation, regardless of whether they are formally notified by investigators.

    • Hastert facing new sexual abuse allegations

      A new accuser is alleging sexual assault in a lawsuit filed against former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), The Chicago Tribune reported.

      The accuser, known in the lawsuit as “Richard Doe,” reportedly claims that Hastert sodomized him in the 1970s. The victim was approximately 9 or 10 years old at the time, the Tribune adds.

      The accuser is pursuing $50,000 in damages, charging negligent infliction of emotional distress, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and battery from the Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 and the former Speaker, according to the report.

      The new lawsuit comes several years after a hush money case revealed allegations of sexual abuse against Hastert from his days working as a high school wrestling and football coach in Illinois.

      Hastert is currently serving a 15-month sentence in a Minnesota federal prison for unlawfully arranging bank withdrawals to cover up sexual abuse allegations.

    • Grassley calls for investigation into Chinese promotion of Kushner company deal

      Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is calling for an investigation into “potentially fraudulent statements and misrepresentations” made by a Chinese company promoting investments in property partly managed by White House adviser Jared Kushner's family's company.

      Reuters noted that Grassley cited one of its reports in a May 25 letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the Securities and Exchange Commission calling for the probe.

      The Republican senator is requesting a review of claims made by Chinese firm Qiaowai in the marketing of the One Journal Square project in Jersey City, N.J. to potential Chinese investors.

      “Given all of these concerns, a closer look at Qiaowai Group and the U.S. Immigration Fund are clearly warranted, as reports suggest both companies have long employed questionable practices,” Grassley wrote.

      Qiaowai and Kushner Companies are looking for investors to help finance a pair of luxury apartment buildings as part of the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program. That program offers visas in exchange for a $500,000 investment in a U.S. business.

    • Windows shot out at Lexington KY newspaper offices

      Several windows were shattered at the main office of the Lexington Herald-Leader in downtown Lexington, amid suspected signs of small-caliber bullet damage to the building.

      The Herald-Leader filed a report on the damage with Lexington Police, who were at the building investigating early Monday morning.

      Exterior windows were damaged on the first-, second- and third-level banks of windows of the press room on the Midland Avenue side of the building. Three exterior windows were shattered, leaving broken glass on the sidewalk outside. Two windows on the upper level of the press room were damaged, but did not shatter. Those windows show small holes and cracks that appear consistent with small-caliber bullet damage.

      Lexington Police on Monday confirmed that they are investigating the incident as criminal mischief, and that investigators believe the damage is consistent with small-caliber bullet damage.

    • McCain: Kushner’s Reported Push For Russia Backchannel Not 'Standard'

      In an interview with an Australian media outlet published Monday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that he does not believe Jared Kushner’s reported suggestion that the Trump transition team establish a secret backchannel to the Russian government followed typical procedures.

      “I don’t like it, I just don’t,” McCain told Australian outlet ABC regarding the Washington Post report that Kushner asked the Russian ambassador to set up a secret communications channel between the Trump team and the Kremlin using Russia’s embassy in the U.S.

      “I know some administration officials are saying this is standard procedure. I don’t think it’s standard procedure prior to the inauguration of the President of the United States by someone who is not in an appointed position,” McCain told ABC.

      McCain also told ABC that he sees Russian President Vladimir Putin as a greater threat than the Islamic State.

      How can anyone support this pervert?

      ===============================================================

      “Donald, what does Tiffany have of yours, and what does Tiffany have of Marla’s?” host Robin Leach asked.

      Trump answered instantly — and he did not bring up his daughter’s eyes, nose or smile.

      “Well, I think that she's got a lot of Marla,” he said.”She's a really beautiful baby, and she's got Marla's legs. We don't know whether she's got this part yet (gestures toward his chest), but time will tell.”

    • RE: Kushner Discussed Setting Up Secret Communication Channel With Moscow

      @mhorndisk:

      ALL past Presidents have had back channel communications. So what? Especially when privacy is needed amidst all these leaks. Keep DREAMING, we all know you want SO BAD to believe Trump will be impeached. It's called PROPAGANDA, and you're the victim!!!  :blownose:

      Joy-Ann Reid talked about this on "Meet the Press" just this morning

      "So in December, the now president-elect decides that he is going to name Jim Mattis to be his Secretary of Defense," Reid said. "But he doesn't open a back channel. He [the president-elect] sends his real estate developer son-in-law, supposedly, decides to open this back channel, not just – and it isn't a back channel by the way because this isn't how it works -- you don't go to the adversary country and say let's set something up inside of your secure facility, in your embassy, so that we evade our intelligence services, sorry, set it up in your secure facility, which even takes them aback. Because that's bizarre, the idea that we are going to do this on your facility. And you send them to do that without Jim Mattis, the real estate developer who has no foreign policy experience whatsoever. And then, if it is a channel about opening up negotiations to do something with foreign policy, why are they also back channeling with a bank, a Kremlin-connected Russian bank. And why is the Reuters report saying that part of the discussion was the possibility of opening opportunities for financing for Trump-related ..."

      @flozen:

      The story about Kushner is certainly worth a look.  It concerns Jared, the political neophyte, taking a meeting with a Russian banker who, coincidentally, graduated from a Russian school for spies.

      But this thread has grown to be much more – essentially, a permanent tribute to the intellectual acuity of not one, but TWO, of our most prolific contributors.

      Briefly, enter their world -- if you dare! -- where understanding a comment is secondary to answering a comment, and where anger reigns supreme over accuracy.  Enjoy.

    • Suit against Hillary Clinton over Benghazi deaths and emails is dismissed

      A federal judge in Washington has dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Hillary Clinton's lax security surrounding her emails led to the deaths of two of the Americans killed in the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.

      In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson tossed out the wrongful death claims as well as allegations that Clinton essentially slandered the parents of the deceased by contradicting accounts the parents gave of events related to their children's deaths.

      The suit was filed last August by Patricia Smith, the mother of State Department information officer Sean Smith, and Charles Woods, the father of CIA operative Tyrone Woods.

    • White House photo caption omits husband of Luxembourg's gay PM

      The Trump White House on Saturday omitted Gauthier Destenay, the husband of Luxembourg prime minister Xavier Bettel, from the caption to an official photograph of the spouses of Nato leaders, taken at this week’s summit in Brussels. Destenay, a Belgian architect, married Bettel in 2015, becoming the first same-sex spouse of a leader of a European Union member state.

      American first lady Melania Trump was identified twice in the caption to the official White House photograph, which was taken by Andrea Hanks and posted to Facebook in a collection of pictures from Trump’s nine-day international tour.

      The caption read: “First Lady Melania Trump poses with Belgium’s Queen Mathilde, center, and other spouses of Nato leaders: First Lady Emine Erdoğan of Turkey; Iceland’s Thora Margret Baldvinsdottir; the First Lady of France Brigitte Trogneux; First Lady Melania Trump; Slovenia’s Mojca Stropnik; Bulgaria’s Desislava Radeva; Belgium’s Amélie Derbaudrenghien, and Norway’s Ingrid Schulerud, during their visit Thursday 25 May 2917 [sic], at the Royal Palace in Brussels.”
