The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is warning of an increasingly drug-resistant emerging fungus that the health agency says presents a “serious global health threat.”

Candida auris is a rare fungal disease that is easily spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or from person-to-person and can cause severe illness in hospitalized patients and those with weakened immune systems, according to health officials.

@raphjd There is some fungus among us

Actually, that is not a new fungus, it's one that has existed for a long time that typically shows up in people whose bodies are shutting down and have compromised immune systems - which is why it is usually found in hospitals.

          Definitely an old story.
Strange post from one who does not ordinarily promote the views of the CDC.
Though who could disagree that "there is some fungus amongst us".

A while back I had jock friend name Gus (short for Agostino) who was a lot of fun, so one time I called him FunGus. He looked at me with a wry frown, and said, "would you like me to kick you with my athlete's foot?"

              @nix54 Definitely a new story.
Previous fungi species, ok "old story". But first case of candida auris was diagnosed only in something like 2009 or 2013 (accounts vary) in Japan. In USA there were only a few cases in Chicago and New York, until the recent outbreak which is more broad.

Problem with candida auris is that it resists everyday bleach & alcohol disinfection, as well as the usual drugs. It may have evolved from their use.

Also, like most fungi, it colonizes healthy people's skin without causing a symptomatic infection, making it easy to spread to the immune-compromised by skin contact.

The original post is brief, but it is conveying that there is a fungus (yes, among us), that may have been around for some time, but now it is really taking off in hospitals and worst of all, in ICUs.

Candida auris is often multi-drug resistant and has had time to spread in recent years while attention was drawn to Covid. Yes, its fatality rate is highest on the immunocompromised or with other comorbidities. As for relevance in 2023:

                https://fortune.com/well/2023/03/21/candida-auris-fungal-infection-what-to-know/ from which:

"Earlier this year, it was named on the WHO’s first-ever list of fungal “priority pathogens.” Candida auris was named as one of four “critical” threats—the highest risk category—on the list of 19 fungal diseases.

"...the fungus can be carried on people’s skin without them knowing it, allowing it to spread to others."

A medical issue to keep an eye on, imho.

Strange only if you like to swallow things on faith, not checking them.

A bit's "source" will affect how hard you check it - but not the final answer ie. whether it is true.

Even Hitler was often right about time & weather, and even liars need credibility ie. to be mostly honest.

@blablarg18 Good grief -- conflating the CDC with Hitler. Your first post was factual and even helpful. What a quick way to go from winner to whiner.

@flozen Nope. Not even close to what I said.

@raphjd Since this thread has reached the stage where pissy people misrepresent fellow commentors, perhaps time to lock it? I mean, if that's the usual practice (as one suggested to me in another thread - i don't really care tho).
