Why do torrents that have already been taken down still affect my ratio?
-
I started downloading a torrent that was flagged as a duplicate sometime later but it still counts toward my ratio.

The data transferred has already been counted. You're "charged" for what you download before it was taken down, and you're also "credited" for what you uploaded before it was taken down.
Always check in on your torrents so you can stop any that have been taken down that you're still seeding. You won't be credited for anything you upload after it has been removed.

...as it's not being reported to the tracker any longer.

The site admins try to strike a balance:
- We (users) don't want the site stuffed with copies of the same old stuff
- We (users) don't want to LOSE our downloads just because the uploader posted a duplicate!
So: when a torrent is flagged as a duplicate, it is removed from the website (I think hidden is a better term in this case), it is STILL a valid torrent (I know because it shows, at least for a time, as a duplicate torrent in my list or uploaded torrents!)
Also, when (as the uploader) I am notified that my upload was a duplicate, I am instructed to continue seeding until the last leecher completes.
Since it's still a torrent on the site (even if hidden) leechers still get charged and I still get SBP and upload credits for my torrent.
This is different than a DMCA take-down, where the torrent is actually DELETED (that is, it disappears completely from my list of uploaded torrents). In that case, any leecher who already has my information (IP Address, namely) can continue to download the torrent, but because said torrent is no longer a part of the site, I get no upload credit (or SBP) for it, and they do not get "charged" for it.

@bi4smooth Their topic and message are two different things. A torrent taken down, I read that as removed, would error in your client as "unregistered" in which case you should absolutely stop seeding if you want credit for any data that you're uploading.
The first part of my response though answered their question as to why removed/duplicate torrents affect ratio, that data sent/received has already been transferred and reported to their account. The removal of a torrent doesn't remove the fact that data has been downloaded and uploaded.

Agreed that once data is transmitted and reported to the tracker, it's "part of the record" - my point was more to the idea that, just because its become unregistered on the tracker, doesn't mean the torrent is dead! The tracker is NOT INVOLVED in the actual transmission of data from the seeder to the leecher.
To my point: If I start leeching a torrent, and half-way through...
- the torrent is removed for being a duplicate, but I continue leeching (and the seeder continues seeding), I will get my torrent (all of it), and my ratio will be affected according to ALL of the data transferred.
- the torrent is removed for a DMCA complaint, but I continue leeching (and the seeder continues seeding), I will get my torrent (all of it), but my ratio will only be affected by the data transferred and reported BEFORE the torrent was deleted in the tracker.
This whole thing is a "how the sausage is made" kind of discussion: keep seeding, play fair, keep your ratios up, and none of this matters!

I'm not sure I would say "absolutely stop seeding." It's true that one won't get credit for anything seeded after a torrent is deleted from the site, but one can still share data with a leecher that was connected prior to the deletion. This upload from my client doesn't hurt/cost me anything, and it benefits the leecher--which is probably a Good Thing.
If I have a deleted torrent in my client and no leechers are connected to it, then no new ones will be and I can delete the torrent, saving any downloaded material that might have come through.

Don't misquote me. I said "...absolutely stop seeding if you want credit for any data that you're uploading."
