Upscaling - WHY?
-
I wish someone would explain to me the purpose of upscaling.
-
@lololulu19 i dont get it either

The purpose is, for movies/videos for which no actual HD resolution exists, to enhance the image into a higher quality and size. If done properly, it can actually look quite good.
Quite frankly, if you never thought of it this way, many/most DVD and Blu-ray players and televisions will do upscaling of an SD signal into 1080p HD, or on a 4k television like I have, it can also upscale (and usually these devices do it automatically with an SD signal) to a near-HD look.
Since your disc players, tv's, and sometimes also your media players on your computer all can do the same thing, I don't understand why people question an upscaled upload here. Some people actually have bitched about upscaling in some torrent comments.
Even some cable tv and streaming signals online are actually upscaled to 1080p HD if the studio owning the movie/show hasn't done its own HD master from original elements.

@cinemacapman i understand when its done good. but most of them just make the cute guys look like dolls

@lololulu19 you've demonstrated many times in these forums that you do not get a great number of things.. so I guess add this one to the list.

Exactly--and a TV or computer monitor does this very accurately, because it knows the target resolution of the display screen. There's no need to upscale a lower-resolution video and make a new file from it, which is going to be considerably larger that the original.
The exception would be if someone is using some AI software that actually sharpens things up using a complex algorithm that analyses each frame and then produces a clearer result. Some uploaders here have tried to do this (with mixed results), and this can be an improvement. But simply stretching each frame and quadrupling file size offers no benefit.

Upscaled video's will only hurt your computer resources/performance ...
It may cause CPU overheating and will damage video card due to excessive and forcing display functuon ...Your product : TV, PC, Players are already built with best customized settings from the manufacturer ...
Most players are already equipped with high advance auto detection settings w/c suites it's performance ... -
@eobox91103 I agree .. some out there just 'push the button' to move some low quality 240p/480p direct to 1080p or higher then post it like they did something good lol.. then there are others who take the time to try to get an output that's better. There are a lot of very poor quality low rez and color mapped vids out there that AI won't fix, but can make it look better - TV/media players can't really do a good job of dynamically correct vids that have issues bad blocking, halos, ringing, banding, aliasing, and color corrections..
I've 'upscaled' several videos that did not focus on the resolution at all (you can only do so much with crappy input video quality).. Instead I focused on the quality of the picture itself, color graded or in some cases audio corrections with vocal isolation to undo the background music drowning out the verbal. All of thise can be done by hand but AI can make it dead simple to get a clean result in a fraction of the time.

- In addtion all original textures from the video source origin disappears
and the character generated by this AI upscaled software turns into 3D or anime ...

@jrewingwanna Actually, I usually am EXPLAINING something. Not asking. When I do ask, it is virtually always something that is wrong that NEEDS to be looked into.
This is one of those cases. I have found that the only difference between an original video and an upscaled video is the SIZE of the file. There is no improvement in color, contrast, brightness, audio, nothing.
The changes made to adjust color, brightness, contrast, etc. have very little effect on the file size.
There HAVE been some videos fixed to correct color, brightness, audio, etc. One thing that I have done sometimes is to take videos in which the sound track is not in sync with the video - where hear what is going on in the video a few seconds before or after you see it. It takes a lot of work to get them in sync.
Re-encoding is a great thing - especially when done on vintage videos which are stored on VHS and slowly fading away.
When someone uploads an UPSCALED video, they should mention what IMPROVEMENT there is in the video. In fact, since their upscaled video is much larger, they should also include the ORIGINAL video. -
