BBC bans "Are You Being Served" because Mr Humphreys was "too camp".

Apparently, they got complaints from liberals saying they are offended.

We live in an age where you can do and say anything you want, as long as it's liberal, but you can't be gay and play a camp fag on TV.

The internet and entertainment is full of camp fags, including on the BBC, but they are ok.

Speaking of English sitcoms.. I just found out that Baldrick on "Blackadder" was portrayed by a real Knight of the Realm! Sir Anthony Robinson.

I wonder if Dame Edna Everidge will be banned.

OMG - that's awful (and cancel culture at its worst!)...

I LOVE "Are You Being Served!" (I've watched a lot of old British comedy: Faulty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served... just to name a very few)... and I'm a big Dr. Who fan as well (tho I've fallen behind... WAY behind! But my favorite Dr is David Tennant - I know I'm a minority there 😉 )

Fortunately, there is the Internet... nothing dies on the Internet anymore! 🙂
I did a quick search - at least the first 10 seasons or "Are You Being Served" are easily available on public torrent sites...

Mine too! Matt Smith was OK (especially when he shared the screen with Arthur Darvill), but after that it was downhill. There's a great video on YouTube showing the Tenth Doctor's regeneration, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs_isWP71FE . The notes used to describe the choral text, Vale decim (Farewell tenth!), with vale repeated ten times. Don't feel embarrassed if a tear forms...

And I have them all. BTW, The BBC suspension of Are You Being Served was five years ago--they tried a remake of it with a new cast, and its ratings were terrible. (See https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/1690113/furious-viewers-demand-licence-fee-refunds-from-the-bbc-as-are-you-being-served-remake-is-branded-truly-ghastly/ or https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/news/are-you-being-served-remake-panned-by-viewers-35003503.html for details.)

Remakes often fall short--can you imagine anyone other than Patricia Routledge playing Mrs. Bucket (it's boo-KAY)? The AYBS remake was sacked not because of Mr. Humphries' character--it was just bad television.

(Note aside: David Tennant and Arthur Darvill appeared together in all three seasons of the mini-series Broadchurch, also available from torrent sites. I think the first season was the best..)

If "Are You Being Served" is too "out there" - what's to become of the likes of Monty Python?

Irreverence and borderline offensiveness is the backbone of British comedy! 🙂

I have both box sets; AYBS and Grace and Favour aka AYBS Again.

Note: I edited my post above, as I found a better YouTube link to the "tenth Doctor regeneration" sequence. The new one has an English translation of the sung Latin text, and while my inner language geek would quibble with a few bits of it, it conveys the emotion.

As an aside, Russell T Davies, who spearheaded the revival of Doctor Who in 2005 and was producer for several seasons, is an out gay man. He was producer and head writer for six years, and I believe he retired from the series when David Tennant left as Tenth Doctor (although a fact check on that would be helpful.) If so, it makes the farewell theme even more poignant.

@raphjd I haven't seen any of the Grace and Favour episodes. Do you recommend them?

I like the show. If you can find it, it would be worth the grab.

I'm putting everything on my NAS so I'll probably post that here.

Russell T Davies created and owns the right to The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, as well as Queer as Folk.

He has, in the past, that he won't work with the BBC again.
