    • RE: New Jersey Gay Marriage: Voters Favor Referendum According To New Poll

Gay marriage is not likely to survive the popular referendum in New Jersey.

54% of the people may support it. But the people who respond to such surveys are not the same people who vote in elections.

Civil rights issues are not appropriately decided at the ballot box. Oppressed minorities would not be experiencing oppression in the first place if their cause was a popular one.

Gay marriage has never passed anywhere in the USA when it has been put to a popular vote.

      Not once, not ever.

If NJ has a recall provision, we ought to petition for a recall of Gov. Christie.

Mr. Christie is certainly aware that gay marriage has never passed anywhere in the USA when it has been put to a public vote.

      Not once, not ever.

      You might try Avidemux.

      hXXp://avidemux.berlios.de/

Avidemux is cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux), FREE, open source, and powerful. It is not particularly user-friendly (IMHO). But, if you are willing to invest a little time learning the interface, it can give you good results.

And it is completely FREE and legal!

    • RE: White House Will Not Support SOPA, PIPA

Today was the day of SOPA/PIPA protest, and apparently it DID have an effect.

13 Republican and 1 Democratic senator switched sides, and now oppose PIPA rather than support it. It now has only about 35 supporters in the Senate.

SOPA support in the House also dropped today. But it was already dead, as the president indicated he would veto SOPA if the bill passed Congress.

Inevitable some time in the next 100 years?

Cool as the demonstration was, I doubt that Benedict even noticed.

He lives in his own little world, behind that bulletproof glass and within the confines of his tightly closed mind.

    • RE: Bush: Kanye West Katrina Comment 'Disgusting'

It fascinates me that the low point of the Bush presidency was a derogatory comment by Kanye West.

Not starting two wars (one without reason or provocation), not torturing people, not wiretapping without a court order, not starting secret prisons in various countries which were not subject to the rule of law, not holding prisoners indefinitely without trial, not killing thousands of American soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, not failing to intervene adequately to relieve a major natural disaster, not placing incompetents in important offices for political reasons, not starting a war of hatred against gays (including outlawing gay marriage in nearly every American state), and not completely destroying the world economy.

The low point was being accused of racism by Kanye West.

    • RE: Rutgers University student kills self after sex tape airs online

      @uwsguy102:

What disgusted me, however, was the 'Comments' section. I know the anonymity of the internet generally brings out the worst in people, but I could only stomach about 10-15 comments before I had to turn the computer off and walk away. I used to think I would live abroad for about 2 more years and then eventually move back to the United States, but more and more I think that I just don't have a home there. I know you can find bigotry and hatred in many places, but it seems like persecuting gays/lesbians/queers is becoming more and more accepted in America.

      I feel… terrible.

      So do I.

I am so fed up with the intolerance and bigotry of this country that I'm considering moving out of it myself.

So much hatred. So much hurt. It's not going to change any time in the next hundred years, I'm afraid.

    • RE: What sort of virus and malware protection do you use?

      May I recommend Ubuntu?

Install it alongside Windows in a dual boot (or into a virtual machine, if you have a multicore processor).

When you want to surf, just boot into Ubuntu and use Firefox or Chrome or any number of other browsers.

Surf anywhere you want. They can't hurt you. No malware, no viruses, no anti-virus software, and no problems.

    • RE: Boy Tested for STDs After Finding Condom in Hotel Room

I guess I am a cynic. Some things about this story just don't ring true for me. Here is the original article from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:

      hXXp://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/4-year-old-allegedly-597904.html

First problem: The kid was playing with the condom in the morning, then developed symptoms (herpes-like blisters) just a few hours later. That's too soon.

Second problem: The family says the room was not clean, and had no soap, cups, or towels. But they were "too tired" to request another room. Instead, they requested soap, cups and towels.

The kid found the condom "between the sheets." They slept in unmade beds?

Third problem: The kid's mom took the kid to a doctor the next day. Apparently not satisfied with the diagnosis, she brought him to a hospital the day after that. Then, she says, she brought him to the hospital "almost daily" for some time after that.

Daily? Why? Did she think the diagnosis was going to change? What diagnosis? She says they were still awaiting test results, three weeks later.

Third problem: The family is negotiating "a settlement" with the hotel and are threatening to sue if it does not pay them something.
