When I was 18 or 19 I'd think nothing of driving from the northeast to Florida to visit family here and there. I'd usually drive straight through, pulling over to nap when needed. A few times when I wanted to make it further without napping I'd open up my shorts and jack off for a good while. I was maybe 12 when I had feelings for other boys. I don't know that I recognized those feelings as sexual for another couple years. Growing up in the rural south of the US I had zero exposure or information on sexuality (aside from friends misinformation and a few magazines) much less gay sexuality. I recall seeing drag queens on tv for a gay event as a teen and thinking that wasn't me. Again, that attitude was a vestige of being raised in a conservative area that demonized other and was openly racist, sexist and homophobic. By the time I was 16, I knew exactly what I was and was starting to understand that: I wasn't alone, it was likely just an uncommon expression of nature, and it was a crappy unfair situation to be in. A counselor was the first person I came out to that year. Lucky for me they were cool. I told my family in the next year or two. By that time I had GTFO and moved to a big city 1200 miles north. I was quite angry about all this for many years, which was my coping mechanism. Eventually I got tired of being angry and chilled out. I hope anyone else who has experienced violence and/or oppression over sexuality can make the connections between their experiences and those of other oppressed peoples. It mystifies me that gay Republicans exist.

@raphjd I hadn't seen this news. Thanks for sharing. It's been troubling to me to see Poland, a country with its own big fascism problem, lauded as a hero for supporting Ukraine. My hope is that their responsibilities to the EU will at least force them to make equitable policy, even if they keep electing right wing fucks.

@raphjd Please queen. Do you realize how angry and ignorant you sound? New here but see you posting lots of good things. This thread, not so much. You can't imagine attacking a movement of people of color seeking to redress and ameliorate the residue of millenia of oppression will go over well. Boston will be fine. Philadelphia Pride had been widely unliked for many years, primarily due to a complete lack of transparency and coziness with police. They finally let it go, and the mantle has been picked up by a wonderful coalition of folks from many backgrounds determined to be open, transparent and inclusive. Those are good things. Pride activities this year have been amazing. I bet the same will happen in Boston.
