Thanking an uploader by giving points and using the Thank You button DO NOT indicate if the file is good or not, just that people thanked the uploader for posting the file.  99.99999999999% of all that takes place the second they decide to download the file.

I learned THAT the hard way.  I thanked someone and awarded SBP for a torrent that looked like it would interest me.  (I actually commented on it in the "monitoring bad uploaders" thread).  After three whole days, nobody (according to my torrent client) had more than 17% of a 1 GB file.  Coincidentally, I searched the site and found the same movie, but at a size of over 2 GB with 2 seeds.  I killed the earlier download and I took a chance on the newly found torrent and had the entire movie in mere hours.  Due to that happenstance, I've decided to reserve awarding points until I see how quickly traffic is moving and see that it won't take me an entire week to download a 1 GB file.

I'm not sure to whom your post was directed, Uwe, since you didn't quote any post.  My point isn't to argue with you.  In fact, I do applaud your efforts to respond to the point that people feel an uploader should be rewarded for efforts in addition to what they end up seeding to leeches.  My main point is, "what do members really consider to be important factors in deciding to download a torrent?"

Maybe my tastes are simple.  As I stated in the post above, all I really care about are an accurate title, a few pictures to tell me if the guys/scenes are hot enough, and some tags for whichever kinks appeal to me.

Anyway, like I said, I do applaud your efforts to respond to members' wanting rewards for their efforts.

Like I stated in an earlier post, I think what started out as a good intention has become an overly thought and bloated and instead of leading to rewarding, it's leading some to feel like they're being punished for what they feel is hard work, but "not hard enough" according to others.

Do some people care about the codec?  I'm sure some do.  I don't.  I'm not sure a lot of people do.

Care about alt-title?  Maybe some do.  Not sure may, though.

How about:

Is the title correct?  Yay.  Is it in all upper and lower case letters, capitalized correctly?  I don't care.

Is the box cover included?  Yay.  Additional pictures?  Yay.  If not, I'm not gonna lose sleep.

Is there a url included for further info?  Yay!  If not, that's why I always have a tlavideo and aebn.net window open.  I'm capable of searching for myself.

Are there a few tags included?  Yay!  If not, again, tlavideo and aebn.net.

For me, that's all I need to make a decision of whether or not I want to download.

The size of the pictures?  Not a problem.

Bit rate?  Huh?

At the risk of sounding snarky, at this point, I'm thankful for being my auto-approval status.  No expectations…no disappointment.

Is the uploader seeding an obscene amount of torrents in addition to this one?  It just seems an to be an awfully long time for a 1 GB torrent.

Why reward some lazy member who can't create his own uploads. That is what I take offence to….VERY EASILY!

If a user is too f**king dense to upload a torrent themselves then you better believe I will side with an uploader EVERY TIME! Seeding is great  but when it is at the expense of an uploader who cannot even get complete credit for HIS UPLOAD then I have a real problem with that.

In the "thieves" mind he might just be thinking about helping get the torrent out faster so everyone doesn't get blue balls downloading at 2kB for example. Me, I like those people. Lazy, maybe some, but there's also people who are trying to help. Of course they can upload if they can reseed. Whenever I uploaded it was only because I wanted to put a torrent here, and I appreciated everyone who jumped on my torrent to help out. Why should everyone suffer a slow download just because someone doesn't know how to manage their ratio and wants all he can get out of his upload, or is a ratio whore and only wants more more more to inflate their ratio? It's about sharing files, not how high you can inflate your ratio. I care more about receiving Thank You's or some nice torrent comments and knowing people enjoyed my upload. Ratio? I'll earn it by seeding some torrents and not being download happy. Everyone who has a slow connection needs to know how to manage their torrents and ratio a little better than fastliners. Uploaders should get some SBP just for uploading. Maybe 50 SBP (?). That'll help ease this. [/off-topic]

I have to agree with trukr.  I've seen this happen with torrents I've uploaded on here and other trackers, and I've been nothing more than thankful for the help. I don't know…call me crazy, but when I'm downloading, it seems the more seeds the quicker I'll get my 100% and be able to watch it and jump on the seed bandwagon.

Exactly!  I was starting to wonder if we were over thinking the goal.  If people think they're going to be judged on so many technicalities, even if the only negative is not gaining bonus points, it may tend to scare people off..especially newbies.

Once a user asked us if he can donate some SPB directly to another user, without waiting him to upload something. I suggest we make this thing happen. If we have users with a big bank of SPB and a good heart, willing to help others in need, I don't see why it shouldn't be possible. Although this can generate a mass wave of beggary for seed points…

I think you answered your own question.

Why upload?  You're right.  Without uploaders, no torrent site would be any fun.

My confusion is, why does everyone feel entitled to some special glory for uploading?

Instead of looking at ratios, how about comparing the number of torrents you download compared to the number you upload. THAT should be your reward.  And if you're looking to increase your ratio, simply leave your torrents running for as long as possible.  You'll get the seed bonus for the number of hours you're seeding.

Now, if this were a pay-site, I could see some concern about being rewarded to balance any subscription fees, but since it's free, I'm more than happy to give when I can.  When you can, do.  When you can't, don't.

While I was work today I had a thought about this situation and came to a simple conclusion.  Why not just PM the "offending" seeders and explain to them you are working on your ratio.  Then you could politely ask them to throttle their upload speed until you can properly seed the torrent.

ballard1 I am not trying to be combative with you at all.  I actually agree with your idea about rewarding uploaders. Read my previous posts about this already being discussed "at a higher level" in the past.  I just try to give voice to the seeders who are contributing but they just aren't uploading new material, that's all.  Again I apologize if I hurt your feelings.

Woops.  I just realized I didn't give quite a good enough example.  I just checked my Transmission Remote for my other seedbox, and came across this.  (Unfortunately, you can't copy & paste from their screens).  Anyway, this is from a torrent from another site.

I think a seedbox is the way to go.
And just to illustrate my point again:
I just checked out a downloader on my new upload who is blessed with a fast line. I assume that he has never uploaded anything (0 gift seed bonus) but he has a 3.4TB buffer!
He doesn't contribute at all and can download whatever he wants and never has to worry about dropping. His seeding in the first few hours while he downloads make up for 10 times the amount he is downloading.

In the time I have uploaded a little over 500MB he seeded 7.24GB. A ratio of almost 14 on 1/3 of 1.5GB file. It will be much more once the file is fully uploaded.
That's great. It distributes the file quickly. And good for him that he can grab whatever he wants.
A little jealous? Yes, of course. I want more porn too!  

Well, to illustrate MY point, here's the proof.  Someone uploaded a siterip of "Damn, that's big."  The total collection is over 11GB.  Here are my stats of a minute ago.

Another option is subscribing to a seedbox.  This week, seedbox.fr is running a special.  A "mini gaga" seedbox, which gives you 5 slots and 70GB of storage and up to 1GB of bandwidth, is only €6 (about $8.50 USD).  I joined last week (I bought the bronze at €14, cuz they didn't have any more minis left then) and have seen upload speeds of over 4MB/s (That's MB/s, not Mb/s) on several torrents, depending on the number of leeches.  I've seeded 1.5 GB torrents in an hour, and had a 3.0 ratio or better by the time someone has a completed copy.
