    • Ken Mehlman: 'I Am Sorry' For Role In 2004 Anti-Gay Marriage Push

The Huffington Post  |  By Luke Johnson

Ken Mehlman, the former Republican National Committee chairman and President George W. Bush re-election campaign manager who came out as gay in August 2010, said that he regrets his role in the campaign's anti-gay marriage push 2004.

"At a personal level, I wish I had spoken out against the effort," he told Salon in an interview published Friday, referring to the campaign's attempt to draw out the conservative base by attacking same-sex marriage.

"As I’ve been involved in the fight for marriage equality, one of the things I’ve learned is how many people were harmed by the campaigns in which I was involved," he continued. "I apologize to them and tell them I am sorry. While there have been recent victories, this could still be a long struggle in which there will be setbacks, and I’ll do my part to be helpful."

In 2004, 11 states resoundingly passed gay marriage bans, and Bush publicly supported a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. However, some political scientists have doubted that the gay marriage referenda had much effect on re-electing Bush – a view that Mehlman shares.

Since coming out, Mehlman pushed for gay marriage in New York, Maryland and New Hampshire. He has also raised money for the effort to support a legal challenge against California's gay marriage ban, Proposition 8. He serves on the board of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which is the sole sponsor to the Prop. 8 federal court challenge.

In the Atlantic interview where he acknowledged his sexuality, Mehlman said that if he had come out sooner, he might have been able to play a role in opposing the gay marriage bans.

"I can't change the fact that I wasn't in this place personally when I was in politics, and I genuinely regret that. It was very hard, personally," he said.

    • RE: Maryland Priest, Denies Communion To Lesbian Parishioner At Her Mother's Funeral

Barbara Johnson, Maryland Lesbian Denied Communion At Mother's Funeral, Speaks About Incident

A Maryland lesbian who was denied Communion by a Catholic priest while attending her mother's funeral is speaking out about her experience.

CNN's Brooke Baldwin spoke to Barbara Johnson, who confirmed previously reported details of the incident. "I approached [Father Marcel Guarnizo of Gaithersburg's Saint John Neumann Catholic Church] to receive communion, and at that moment, he placed his hand over the bowl containing the Eucharist and looked into my eyes and said, 'I cannot give you Communion because you live with a woman, and in the eyes of the church, that is a sin.'"

Johnson, 51, now says that Father Marcel also left the altar as she was delivering her eulogy. Though Johnson has reached out via an email, the priest has yet to apologize.

Meanwhile, as The Washington Post is reporting, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington has since apologized in a statement, noting that the priest has an obligation to "handle such a situation pastorally by discussing the consequences of such sin with the person privately before actually denying them Communion."

As Johnson noted, "My family are very appreciate of all of the outreach we've received. However, we believe the only reason to be talking about this still is because we would not want any other family to go through what was the worst experience on the very worst day of all of our lives…we feel that it is important that Father Marcel is removed from parish life."

    • Maryland Priest, Denies Communion To Lesbian Parishioner At Her Mother's Funeral

A Maryland-based priest is garnering heat in the blogosphere today after allegedly denying communion to a lesbian parishioner attending her mother's funeral.

As The New Civil Rights Movement blogger David Badash is reporting, Father Marcel Guarnizo of Gaithersburg's Saint John Neumann Catholic Church reportedly covered the bowl containing the Eucharist as the woman, who is identified only as Barbara, approached him.

“I cannot give you communion because you live with a woman and that is a sin according to the church," he is quoted as saying.

Badash quotes from an Addicting Info blog written by Ann Werner, who also notes, "To add insult to injury, Fr. Guarnizo left the altar when she delivered her eulogy to her mother. When the funeral was finished he informed the funeral director that he could not go to the gravesite to deliver the final blessing because he was sick."

Werner also notes, "I will tell you a little about the woman who drove that priest from the altar. She is kind, she is smart, she is funny and she works hard promoting the arts. She pays her bills, she cares deeply for her family and she loved her mother and her mother loved her right back. And now she will never set foot in a Catholic church again and who can blame her?"

Other bloggers seem to agree with Badash's assessment of Guarnizo. On Restore DC Catholicism, one reader notes, "We need to have a mass protest against this HYPOCRITE! He is one of these reactionary evangelical zealots who believe the pulpit is a place to condemn others and control public policy."

    • Governor Martin O'Malley Signs Bill Allowing Same-Sex Couples To Wed

      By SARAH BREITENBACH
      Associated Press

BELTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — With Maryland legalizing gay marriage, some conservative opponents and religious leaders are counting on members of their congregations, especially in black churches, to upend the legislation at the polls this fall.

Many African American church leaders oppose gay marriage in the liberal-leaning state that's nearly one-third black, and President Barack Obama's re-election campaign is expected to drive many of their congregants to the polls. Opponents submitted draft language for a ballot referendum to overturn the measure just after it passed the Legislature last week.

Gov. Martin O'Malley signed the bill into law Thursday, and it takes effect in January 2013.

Over the weekend, some pastors at predominantly black churches were already using their sermons to shop the referendum effort to their congregations, asking members to sign up for email alerts, put their name on petitions and overturn the law come November. The Catholic Church, which has 1.2 million parishioners in Maryland, has also openly opposed the bill.

A Sunday service at the Hope Christian Church in Beltsville was filled with murmurs of agreement as a spokeswoman for the Maryland Marriage Alliance rallied the mostly black congregation against the law.

"We will have the last say on how marriage will be defined in Maryland," spokeswoman Dee Powell shouted repeatedly to the audience of several hundred.

Some churchgoers said they are bound by their faith to vote against gay marriage.

"It's a personal value and opinion. It has nothing to do with President Barack Obama," said 54-year-old DeBorah Martinez, who has attended Hope Christian for three years.

When a gay marriage bill fell short in the legislature last year, black pastors were given much of the credit for pressuring lawmakers to oppose it. The measure was pulled from the floor of the House as leaders realized if fell short of the needed votes.

Opposition from black pastors in Maryland belies an overall political stance that routinely includes their endorsement of Democratic candidates and support for their agendas.

Opponents will need to collect nearly 56,000 valid voter signatures, equivalent to 3 percent of the people who cast ballots in the 2010 gubernatorial election, to put the measure on the November ballot. Even gay marriage advocates expect the referendum to end up on the ballot.

Six states and the District of Columbia currently recognize gay marriages. The state of Washington has also legalized gay marriage, and its law takes effect in June. Voters there are expected to petition the measure to referendum this fall.

Maine legalized the unions for same-sex couples in 2009, but later that year became the only state overturn a such a law passed by a legislature.

Meanwhile, about 30 states have constitutional amendments that seek to prohibit gay marriage, most by defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Donald Norris, chairman of the department of public policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said black churches could heavily influence the referendum, but liberal voters who come out to support Obama could offset the votes against same-sex marriage.

A number of factors could tip the vote on a referendum, Norris said. For example, a weak Republican presidential candidate could mean conservative voters stay home and don't cast ballots against the law.

"It's going to really depend upon a variety of things that are going to happen between now and November," Norris said.

Gay marriage advocates are hoping that young voters — whom they expect to support their cause — will turn out for Obama as they did in 2008.

"I think Obama's election turns out a number of different people," said Sultan Shakir, campaign manager for Marylanders for Marriage Equality, a coalition of gay rights groups that worked to get the bill passed. "(There is) a lot of attention around people who attend church, but there are plenty of other demographics who are going to be turned out."

The advocates also think it is inappropriate to leave what they consider a civil rights issue to the discretion of voters.

"It's sad to me that anyone would think that it's OK to put up the rights of a minority to a popular vote," said Lisa Polyak, chairwoman of the board of directors for the gay rights organization Equality Maryland. "We have children, we have lives, we have jobs and we just want to go about them with integrity."

Proponents of gay marriage are also counting on religious leaders who support of the bill to influence their congregations and for labor unions to urge their members to vote to keep gay marriage legal. Some black pastors who supported the measure as a matter of civil rights appeared publicly with O'Malley, a Democrat, during the legislative debate.

Babatunde Adedayo, a 29-year-old from Upper Marlboro, said the president and his stance on gay marriage will likely influence his peers in November. Obama supports civil unions, but has not endorsed marriage for same-sex couples

"I think this affects every facet of our culture," Adedayo said after the service at Hope Christian. "As a black African American in America, it is something the black church takes seriously and depending on Barack Obama's stance on this, it will affect a lot of people."

    • St Petersburg passes 'anti-gay' law despite outrage

The local parliament in Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg on Wednesday passed a controversial law banning "homosexual propaganda", in defiance of protests by gay rights groups.

The law – passed in a third and final reading with 29 parliamentarians in favour and five against -- makes it illegal to spread "propaganda" among minors aged under 18 in favour of homosexuality and paedophilia.

But gay rights groups have said the law is dangerous as it will be left up to the whim of the authorities to decide what constitutes propaganda, meaning gays could risk being punished simply for their lifestyle.

"This law is shameful for the Saint Petersburg parliament," said Olga Galkina of the Yabloko (Apple) liberal party, whose deputies with one exception voted against the law.

"The authorities cannot make up divisions between people. How will citizens protect their rights? The authorities will hardly be competent to determine whether this is propaganda or lifestyle," she told Agence France-Presse.

But the law was strongly supported by Saint Petersburg's governor Georgy Poltavchenko and its authors have also vowed to bring a similar initiative to the federal State Duma Parliament for adoption nationwide.

"I have not heard a single word in this law that is not in line with Russian laws," one of the initiators of the new law, Vitaly Milonov of the ruling United Russia party, told AFP.

"Homophobia is a term thought up by people of untraditional sexual orientation about people who do not understand the way in which they live," he added.

Offenders risk being punished with a fine of up to 50 000 rubles ($1 700) if found guilty of promoting homosexuality.

The fines for promoting paedophilia -- whose distinction from homosexuality is not made explicitly clear in the law -- rise to one million rubles ($35 000).

The law forbids "making propaganda through public acts for homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality and trans-genderism among minors".

According to the law, this would mean spreading information "harmful to the health and moral and spiritual development of minors, including the formation within them of a distorted idea of the social balance between traditional and untraditional married relationships". -- AFP

      (Mail & Guardian online Feb 29 2012 20:33)

It’s Official: “Gay Propaganda” To Be Illegal in Russia’s Second Biggest City

Saint Petersburg, long considered Russia’s most beautiful, artistic, and Western-leaning city, took a giant leap backward toward the Stone Age today with the passage of a bill that imposes fines of up to 500,000 rubles (about $17,200) for the “promotion of homosexuality.”

Russia’s second biggest city follow three others in the passage of the outrageously archaic legislation, which effectively makes it illegal to write books, publish articles, or speak in public about being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

The Saint Petersburg City Council voted overwhelmingly in favor of the bill in its third and final reading, with 29 yays, five nays, and one abstention.

Before becoming law in the city, the bill must now be signed by regional governor Georgy Poltavchenko — but since Poltavchenko has previously expressed his view that the legislation would “serve for the good of public morals,” his signature is all but a given.

Proponents of the bill have already said that if they were successful in Saint Petersburg, their next step will be to take it to the national stage.
Flash mobs took to the streets outside Russian embassies across the world earlier this week in efforts to stop the bill’s passage.

Two AllOut.org petitions—one directed to world leaders, the other to Poltavchenko himself and promising a global travel boycott of the city—have also sought to stop the legislation.

      (Queerty, Dan Allen, 29.02.2012)

St. Petersburg bans gay propaganda and promises to punish Rammstein

As St. Petersburg city legislature approved the bill banning the promotion of homosexuality and pedophilia, its initiator promised that when the bill comes to force he will personally seek to have the German rock group Rammstein penalized.

The bill was approved at its third reading on Wednesday by 29 votes to five with one abstention. Those who voted against the bill said it was poorly written and that the penalties were too light. When the bill is signed into force, promotion of homosexuality will be punished by a fine of 5,000 roubles ($166) for private individuals. However if a person found guilty occupies a public post the fine would be increased to 50,000 roubles ($1,600), and legal entities must pay from 250-500,000 rubles ($8,300 to $16,600). The promotion of pedophilia will cost legal entities even more, with fines between 500,000 and 1.5 million roubles ($16,600 to $50,000).

The bill was initiated and promoted by United Russia deputy Vitaliy Milonov who is also the chairman of the lawmaking committee of the legislative assembly. He has said that once the law comes into force he would immediately address the city prosecutor concerning the recent concert of the German industrial metal group Rammstein. Milonov claimed that during the show the rockers performed “insulting scenes of sexual character” and described the whole show as “undisguised and rude pornography “. The lawmaker promised to find the ways to bring both the organizers of the concert and the group itself to responsibility.

The bill has already drawn criticism from the LGBT community in Russia and from Russian and international rights groups. The head of the Vykhod (Way Out) gay rights organization said it would lodge a request with the city governor to veto the bill. Under Russian law the governor can issue a veto up to 10 days after a bill is approved by the legislature.

Milonov said, however, that the bill had been discussed at public hearings and there were no well-founded objections to it. The lawmaker once again stressed that the bill was not aimed at limiting the rights of citizens, but rather at improving of the moral image of St. Petersburg which, according to Milonov, must become “the moral face of Europe”.

Russia decriminalized homosexuality in 1993, and removed it from a list of mental illnesses in 1999. However, Russian LGBT activists claim that the public’s attitude to homosexuality remains negative, with gay marriages and the adoption of children by same-sex couples outlawed in the country.

Sex with persons under the age of consent (16 years) is a criminal offence in Russia and can carry a prison sentence of up to four years. “Corruption of minors” – sexual activities without the actual sex act – is punishable by up to three years in prison.

    • UFC Ultimate Fighter Dakota Cochrane admits gay porn past

The FX reality show The Ultimate Fighter Live released its list of 32 finalists earlier this week, and it didn’t take people long to notice that one of the contestants, Dakota Cochrane, had a rather interesting former career. At one time the Fairbury, Neb., native was known as Danny, and he did gay pornography. This was really no secret, according to MMA Fighting.com, as Cochrane has mentioned his past before. But now that he’s in the spotlight — the winner of The Ultimate Fighter gets a UFC contract — the news is all over MMA message boards. And it’s causing quite the stir. According to several sources, Cochrane performed in 16 gay pornographic films for Sean Cody Films while he was in college. Cochrane addressed the issue with MMA Fighting.com:

“It’s definitely a decision I regret,” he told MMA Fighting. “If I would have known what would happen I definitely wouldn’t have done it. But I had money issues and I needed help. I went there to do pictures, and they started throwing pretty high numbers in front of me. I didn’t really think. It was a big mistake.”

But no matter the size of the mistake, it was one he made no effort to escape on the eve of his biggest opportunity. On his audition tape for TUF, he included an introduction that mentioned all about his past. Everything.

Leave it to UFC — they do everything bigger. While other sports tremble at the very thought of having an athlete come out as gay, UFC hits you with a guy who did gay porn. Cochrane, by the way, says he isn’t gay. In fact it was his girlfriend who convinced him to quit the industry.

“I think it’s a little bit courageous for both of us,” Cochrane said of the UFC’s decision to include him on the show. “I could just hide in a hole and no one would know except for the people close to me. And to them, I was up front. I let them know right away so it wasn’t anything that could come back and bite them in the butt. I think maybe they respected that a little bit. I think some people judge against it, some people will be OK with it. Some people will want me to get my butt kicked, and hopefully others will respect what I’m trying to do.”

Cochrane, 25, was attending the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where he was on the track team (pole vault and 4×100 meter relay), at the time he did the videos. “Every time I was down there, I hated it,” he said to MMAFighting.com.

Cochrane earned a spot on the FX show after beating World Extreme Cagefighting champion Jamie Varner at Titan Fighting Championship 20 last year. Cochrane has an 11-2 overall MMA record, including 7-2 as a professional. His latest bout was a loss by decision in December to former NCAA wrestler Ramico Blackmon at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 1.

There’s no guarantee that Cochrane will last past the first episode of The Ultimate Fighter, but if he does, he should be good for ratings. The new season debuts March 9.

    • Roman Ragazzi, Gay Porn Star And Israeli Military Trainer, Commits Suicide

Dror Barak, a 38-year-old former gay-porn star who performed under the name Roman Ragazzi, took his own life this past Saturday.

Back in 2007, the New York Post outed Barak for leading a double life as an employee of the Israeli consulate and as a gay porn star. He was subsequently fired from the consulate.

Later in the year, Barak/Ragazzi seemed to come to terms with his new life as a gay man, starting a personal training company called Freedom Fitness.
GayPornBlog.com broke the story yesterday, confirming with multiple industry insiders.

The blog also spoke with Raging Stallion head Chris Ward, who had some kind words and high praise for Barak:
“He was probably the hottest man I have ever filmed,” eulogized Ward. “A massive man of pure beauty, intelligence and kindness. He was perfect in every possible way.”

The musclebound hunk was recently featured in an Out magazine photo shoot alongside Calvin Klein beau Nick Gruber and Marc Jacobs’ ad-exec ex-boy Lorenzo Martone.

      Rest in peace, Dror.

    • RE: What is that black bottle porn actors smell?

They are called Poppers. Below is the wikipedia info in part….....

      Poppers
      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses, see Popper (disambiguation).
      Variety of popper brands

Poppers is a slang term for various alkyl nitrites inhaled for recreational purposes, particularly isopropyl nitrite (2-propyl nitrite) and isobutyl nitrite (2-methylpropyl nitrite), and now more rarely, butyl nitrite and amyl nitrite (isoamyl nitrite, isopentyl nitrite).[1] Amyl nitrite is used medically as an antidote to cyanide poisoning,[2] but the term "poppers" refers specifically to recreational use. Amyl nitrite and several other alkyl nitrites, which are present in products such as air freshener, video head cleaner [3] and finger nail polish remover[4], are often inhaled with the goal of enhancing sexual pleasure.[5] These products have also been part of the club culture from the 1970s disco scene to the 1980s and 1990s rave scene.[6] Poppers have a long history of use due to the rush of warm sensations and dizziness experienced when the vapours are inhaled.

Although, according to at least one analysis, poppers have a lower risk of harm to society and the individual than do certain other recreational drugs,[7] other cases have shown that serious adverse effects can occur. In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, an ophthalmologist described four cases in which recreational users of poppers experienced temporary changes in vision.[8] There is some evidence to indicate that even occasional use of poppers may affect vision.[9] Accidentally swallowing or aspirating the liquid, rather than inhaling the vapours, is certainly dangerous and can prove fatal.[10][11]

      Effects

Inhaling nitrites relaxes smooth muscles throughout the body, including the sphincter muscles of the anus and the vagina.[2] It is unclear if there is a direct effect on the brain.[19] Smooth muscle surrounds the body's blood vessels and when relaxed causes these vessels to dilate resulting in an immediate increase in heart rate and blood flow throughout the body, producing a sensation of heat and excitement that usually lasts for a couple of minutes.[20]

Alkyl nitrites are often used as a club drug or to enhance a sexual experience.[5] The head rush, euphoria, and other sensations that result from the increased heart rate are often felt to increase sexual arousal and desire.[5]

While anecdotal evidence reveals that both men and women can find the experience of using poppers pleasurable, this experience is not universal;[21] some men report that poppers can cause short-term erectile problems.[citation needed]

    • One Million Moms Threatens Toys 'R' Us With Boycott…....

Over Archie Comics' Gay Wedding Issue

Seemingly undeterred that their heated protest of JCPenney has done little to further their cause, conservative group One Million Moms has its sights now set on Toys 'R' Us.

As Right Wing Watch and Towleroad are reporting, One Million Moms has threatened Toys 'R' Us with a boycott because the toy chain is carrying the controversial Archie comics issue featuring the wedding of Kevin Keller, an openly gay character.

The group – a division of the American Family Association -- writes on its website:

These comic books are sold at the front checkout counters so they are highly visible to employees, managers, customers and children. Unfortunately, children are now being exposed to same-sex marriage in a toy store. This is the last place a parent would expect to be confronted with questions from their children on topics that are too complicated for them to understand. Issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, which is becoming extremely common and unnecessary.

The trip to the toy store turns into a premature discussion on sexual orientation and is completely uncalled for. Toys 'R' Us should be more responsible in the products they carry.

UPDATE: No word from the toy retailers just yet, but Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater has released a statement in defense of his publication's gay marriage issue. "As I’ve said before, Riverdale is a safe, welcoming place that does not judge anyone," he wrote. "It’s an idealized version of America that will hopefully become reality someday. We’re sorry the American Family Association/OneMillionMoms.com feels so negatively about our product, but they have every right to their opinion, just like we have the right to stand by ours. Kevin Keller will forever be a part of Riverdale, and he will live a happy, long life free of prejudice, hate and narrow-minded people."

Of course, the planned protest comes on the heels of One Million Mom's much-publicized threat to JCPenney after that retailer appointed Ellen DeGeneres as its spokeswoman.

    • Chris Christie's Gay Marriage Veto: We're Going to Override It

New Jersey nearly made it to the finish line. Unfortunately, a governor driven by national ambition derailed the fight for equality and fairness. But Governor Christie's veto only delayed the day and time when we finally establish marriage equality in the Garden State – because it is going to happen in New Jersey, and we are going to override his veto.

Two weeks ago, the New Jersey State Senate and Assembly passed legislation that would establish true equality in the way we treat same-sex couples. It would officially recognize same-sex couple unions for what they are: marriages. Along the way, we encountered the usual hysteria that pops up anytime this issue is mentioned. We heard the same old claims, all of which are based either on fear, hatred, or simple misunderstanding. We heard the ridiculous statements about this opening up a Pandora's Box that would allow people to marry their dogs. We heard all the inane observations from those who in no way, shape, or form would have been impacted by this legislation.

In the end, my colleagues proudly stood up and rejected those arguments. They stood with those whose only request is to be treated like everyone else. It was an enormous accomplishment, particularly in the Senate, where just two years ago a similar bill failed by a vote of 14 in favor vs. 20 against (it required 21 votes in favor to pass). At the time, I abstained from voting, unfortunately -- a decision I immediately regretted.

In two years' time, however, I and many of my fellow colleagues came around to see this issue for what it was: a matter of equality, fairness, and justice. In the end, the Senate passed marriage equality by a 24-16 vote, with two courageous Republicans defying their governor and voting for what was right. The enormous shift between this latest vote and the one we took two years ago clearly spells out that the days of treating same-sex couples as second-class citizens in New Jersey are numbered.

Unfortunately, Governor Chris Christie refuses to be part of the solution to this problem of inequality. Driven by national ambition that would rather see him be president (or vice president) than do what is right, the governor first tried to deflect his position on the issue by calling for a public vote on whether or not same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.

Anyone who is a student of history knows that you never, ever put the rights of the minority up for a vote of the majority; the majority will almost always vote it down. Not only was Governor Christie clearly ignorant of history on this issue, but his newfound sense of populism (the governor never seems to ask for a public referendum on any other issue) was also a way to relieve his Republican colleagues in the Legislature of their duty to serve the people. Our job as legislators is to act. If we are going to simply punt on every difficult issue that comes up, we might as well pack our bags and head home.

Luckily, the majority of legislators were able to see the governor's action for what it was, and we passed marriage equality. Unfortunately, the governor last week vetoed the bill. As if the veto weren't bad enough, the governor also called for an ombudsman to oversee the state's current civil unions law. It was shocking. Governor Christie was actually advocating for a taxpayer-paid position whose main function would be to continue our state's failed policy of discrimination. The governor would have been better off simply vetoing the bill -- his new conditions are frankly an embarrassment.

The governor's actions are disheartening, but they certainly do not represent the will and determination of the people of New Jersey. We want to join the ever-growing number of states that recognize that two people who love one another and want to be in a committed relationship should have the same rights as everyone else, regardless of gender. We don't want New Jersey, which has led the way on so many other progressive issues, to be stuck in neutral while a country like South Africa, which only a generation ago had state-sanctioned racial discrimination, has already moved ahead on this issue.

I know many of my Republican colleagues believe marriage equality is the right thing. Unfortunately, Governor Christie has put political pressure on them to keep them from voting how they wish. I know we can change their mind. I know they are good people who want to do the right thing. And I know that in the end what is right and fair will ultimately win out. Though the governor has placed his feet firmly on the wrong side of history, he simply cannot stop the tide of fairness and equality that is rising not just in New Jersey but across the country. We are going to get this done.

    • Paul Babeu,Ran Abusive Private School, Had Relationship With Male Student

Disgraced Arizona congressional candidate and GOP sheriff Paul Babeu is facing yet another round of unseemly charges.

The Pinal County sheriff, who stepped down as Arizona's co-chair for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign amidst allegations he threatened a gay ex-lover with deportation, reportedly served as headmaster for the now-defunct DeSisto School in Stockbridge, Mass. from 1999 to 2001. When Babeu – a retired major in the Army National Guard and an ex-police officer -- was in charge, the Massachusetts Office of Child Care Services launched an investigation into repeated claims of physical and sexual abuse from students at the private boarding school, ABC15 is reporting.

More questionable still: Babeu's older sister Lucy told the news station that she confronted her brother after finding a 17-year-old student from the school, which services troubled teens, living with him. She noted: “I said what is this student from Desisto doing here? He says, 'Lucy, he's my boyfriend. I love him.'"

Lucy claims her brother, once considered one of his state's rising Republican stars, was clearly having a relationship with the student, who has not been identified: "I said, 'Paul, get a hold of yourself here,'" said Lucy. "You were his teacher! You were his Executive Director! You can't do this."

At age 17, the student would have been the legal age of consent in Massachusetts.

Babeu, 43, has denied claims that he threatened former lover Jose Orozco with deportation back to Mexico, but has acknowledged that he is gay. "I'm here to say that all these allegations ... are absolutely completely false except for the issues that refer to me as being gay," he is quoted by the Associated Press is saying. "Because that's the truth."

    • U.S. Marine Kissing His Boyfriend: Homecoming Photo Goes Viral

A homecoming photo of a U.S. Marine caught in a passionate lip-lock with his boyfriend has gone viral in the blogosphere after it was posted on Facebook.

The dramatic snapshot has drawn over 14,000 likes, and has received over 3,000 comments, since being uploaded to Facebook's Gay Marines group.

Blogger Joe. My. God. quotes Brandon Morgan, the Marine in the photo, as saying:

To everyone who has responded in a positive way. My partner and I want to say thank you. Dalan, the giant in the photo, can't believe how many shares and likes we have gotten on this. We didn't do this to get famous,or something like that we did this cause after 3 deployments and four years knowing each other, we finally told each other how we felt. As for the haters, let em hate…to quote Kat Williams, everyone needs haters, so let them hate. We are the happiest we have ever been and as for the whole PDA and kissing slash hugging in uniform...it was a homecoming, if the Sergeants Major, Captains, Majors, and Colonels around us didn't care...then why do you care what these random people have to say? In summation thank you for your love and support. I received a lot of friend requests off this. I don't just accept requests so if your request was because of this post message me and let me know. Goodnight all, and Semper Fi.

    • True LGBTQ Stories: When A College Football Team Defended Its Gay Captain

I'm From Driftwood is a 501©(3) non-profit forum for true lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer stories. Earlier this year, founder and Executive Director Nathan Manske and two companions successfully completed a four-month, 50-state Story Tour collecting LGBTQ stories from towns and cities across the country. They're pulling some of the most relevant, important and sometimes just enjoyable stories from their archives and sharing them with HuffPost Gay Voices.

Brian Sims never really had to come out to his college football team as gay. In fact, it was the other way around: his team more came out to him.

My quarterback and I... I think we were walking back to the car to get beer out of the trunk. And out of nowhere, the guy turns around and goes, "Yo, Sims. You gay?" And it completely caught me off guard, and I really quickly said, "Yeah, man, thanks for asking." And we both sort of stood there. It was one of those things where it felt like five minutes; it was probably five seconds. And he says, "Cool, man, thanks for telling me." And we just sort of kept on walking like it hadn't happened. And we got to the car, picked up some beer, walked back.

For the next three months, Brian couldn't go anywhere without one of his teammates stopping him to say, "Hey, man, just wanted to let you know, I heard, and it's really cool with me, I got no problems with that, sorry about anything I might have said."

One day, when running drills on the practice field, Brian's position coach, who definitely hadn't caught wind of Brian being gay, said something that put a serious damper on everyone's mood. Brian explains:

We had all these high school kids down doing some drill. They were down on all fours, spinning in a circle, something that's probably not going to make them better football players, but we needed to kill time, and my position coach, who clearly hadn't heard yet, yells out loud from probably 40 feet away while this kid's down on all fours, "Yeah, this is Sims' favorite drill!" thinking he was just making a dig on me.

While Brian was prepared to let it roll off his back, his teammates weren't so forgiving.

My teammates who were out there and heard it all sort of froze for a second. There's, you know, 50 guys up on this field, probably 300 high-school football players, and everybody just stopped dead in their tracks. And clearly my coach had no idea what was going on. I knew exactly what was going on. And these guys sort of started to converge on him. And I ran up, kind of broke it up; I don't think he had any idea of what was going on. And after practice, I went to go talk to him to sort of explain what was going on, and he walked right past me, didn't say a word.

Brian was terrified of what the outcome of the situation would be. No matter how many times he tried to speak to the coach, he would ignore him. The following morning, when preparing to go back to the practice field, the coach stood up on a table, surrounded by the entire team.

He says, "I need everybody's attention. Yesterday I said something really f***ing stupid. I've spent my career teaching you guys what it means to be teammates, and yesterday you guys had to teach me what it means to be a teammate." And that was it, and that was the end of it. And it was still the sort of defining moment for me. I knew my team would be all right when they had to pull my coaches aside and say, "You better be alright with this, because we all are."

Brian is now running to become Pennsylvania's first openly LGBT legislator.

    • Birthplace of NASCAR now a gay bar

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The penthouse where NASCAR was founded in 1947 is now a gay bar.

Back then, Bill France Sr. walked into the four-story, art deco Streamline Hotel and, in a series of meetings, laid out the rules and regulations of what would become the nation’s most popular racing organization.

Friday, two days before the 54th running of France’s baby, the Daytona 500, the lobby of that same hotel, now dusty and worn, was filled with a combination of cheap NASCAR memorabilia and a line of drag queens set to sing and shake to a raucous crowd of almost exclusively male patrons gathered inside the hotel’s racing-themed bar.

In all of American sports, there is no more profound juxtaposition of past and present.

This here was a fine symphony of salt air, longneck Buds, an old Ken Schrader cardboard stand-up awkwardly holding a package of Little Debbie snack cakes, cheap wigs, Kasey Kahne posters, Lady Gaga lyrics, “Do you have a husband?” pickup lines and, right there on the wall near the front desk, a historic, hopeful black-and-white photo of France and other racing enthusiasts banking on a future no one could predict.

“The times they are a-changin’,” crooned entertainer Kelly Mitchell, opening the show with the classic Bob Dylan tune. And, really, who could argue with her?

      Or him.

      Or reality.

This was a circus in all of its glory, a simply wonderful mix of grandiosity, color and approachability right here in the birthplace of a sport that has thrived on packaging the exact same cocktail. If Bill France Sr. had ever decided to create a gay bar, this would be it: comfortable, inclusive and with beer sponsorships on every inch of the wall.

Yes, there in a room with a checkered-flag ceiling, the hood of a Busch Series car on the wall and a neon Miller Lite rainbow “Pride” sign glowing above, Kelly Mitchell and her crew were right at home.

What, this is more flamboyant than neon-green race cars? Wilder than those makeshift clubs in the infield of Daytona International Speedway?

“My favorite driver?” Mitchell said. “How about Madonna.”

Mitchell laughed. Everybody laughs at this. It’s funny and there is no reason to apologize for it.

“I love it,” Mitchell said. “This place is anything but straight.”

An old police chief once called the Streamline a “den of iniquity,” which the regulars took as a badge of honor. Developers have proposed buying the place, renovating it and turning it into a spiffed-up, NASCAR-themed museum and hotel.

Somewhere in between lies the Streamline’s present reality: an aging joint with more personality than customers ($89 rooms available even on race weekend).

Where else could you purchase a Kurt Busch vintage die-cast car for $44.95 while listening to a husky drag queen belt out Shania Twain’s “Man, I feel like a woman?”

“Showtime … (at the) NASCAR bar,” the Streamline’s promotional flyer proudly read. “Where the men are men (and so are some of the women.)”

And yet there’s no denying its history – its patently cool connection to the sport that keeps this beach town famous.

In December 1947, Bill France Sr. gathered a group of racing enthusiasts in the rooftop lounge, now the “Penthouse Club.” It remains the city’s best perch, with crashing waves just a block to the east and the lights of the famed Daytona International Speedway, France’s ultimate legacy, glowing six miles to the west.

Back then, France was trying to bring order to a sport that traced its roots back to the bootleggers flying over the dirt roads of the South during prohibition. He emerged with NASCAR but never turned his back on the outlaw nature of the sport – a populist, live-and-let-live (just live it fast) persona. What other major professional sport was born in a bar anyway?

So maybe that’s why NASCAR seems comfortable with fate taking its course with the Streamline. Who is it to judge?

“Bill France Jr. came here with the mayor and dedicated the plaque outside [marking the hotel’s place in NASCAR history],” hotel manager Michael Blake said. “They had no problem and they knew what business was happening here.”

NASCAR is a far more progressive company than its stereotype. It’s taken strong stances against the flying of the Confederate flag, engaged in outreach programs to inner cities and been home to tremendous professional opportunity for women – not just as drivers but team owners, executives, marketers and publicists.

And while its fan base is often categorized as solely Southern, rural and working class, the infield rows of tricked-out motor homes with Northern license plates and price tags pushing $400,000 tell a different story.

Perhaps it’s why Blake says NASCAR fans generally range from indifferent to supportive of the Streamline. Whether it’s in the expansive infield or here near the beach, this is a group that’s often looking to raise a little hell before watching a little racing. The love of a fast car cuts through barriers.

“This is 2012, not 1912,” Blake said. “Just as I wouldn’t say they are all rednecks, they shouldn’t say anything about the lifestyle of some of the people in our building. I think most people are more grown up about lifestyles now.”

And of course there is this: “There are a number of people who live an alternative lifestyle that are NASCAR fans,” Blake said.

Some of them on Friday were at the Streamline, where a large yet amazingly agile performer was cranking out Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman” to a rowdy, hysterical throng. Then Taylor McCray delivered a rendition of “Milkshake” that was met with enough cheers to rattle the Mark Martin stand-up in the lobby which had been defaced with mascara painted around his eyes.

Mitchell was soon back in control of the microphone, complaining that McCray was unjustly skinny considering “all she does is drink and eat taquitos at 7-Eleven.” And at that point, the old Streamline was up for grabs.

Somehow it all made perfect sense, with a sea breeze pushing the smoke of Marlboro Reds through the air of the precise spot of Daytona’s most historic decision, in a battered and boisterous hotel that created a sport of the people, for the people. All the people.

This was Daytona 500 weekend in full effect – completely and terrifically in full effect.

“We’ll be back,” Kelly Mitchell would soon declare.

Yes. Yes, they will, every Friday at 11.

    • Dan Brian, Gay Teen, Comes Out To His Mother On YouTube

A gay teen's poignant coming out to his mother is making the blogosphere rounds.

As Dan Brian notes on his YouTube page, "Finally got the strength to come out to my mom…I decided to post this so that I could share my experience with you. Hopefully it will be an inspiration to those who do not have such supportive families."

Though heartwarming, the authenticity of the video has been questioned on Twitter, to which Dan Brian has responded, "If she did know [it was being filmed] she would've worn better pants!"

The video comes on the heels of Randy Phillips, the gay U.S. airman whose post-"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" admission to his parents went viral after he uploaded it to YouTube last fall.

Take a look at HuffPost Gay Voices' picks for the 11 best gay viral videos from last year:

    • 'Days Of Our Lives' Gay Kiss:

Will And Neil's Steamy Smooch Makes Daytime Soap History

Daytime soap opera "Days of our Lives" made TV history yesterday by airing the show's first same-sex kiss.

Thursday's episode featured Will (played by Chandler Massey) snogging a handsome stranger named Neil (Jesse Kristofferson) outside at a party, Entertainment Weekly is noting. And fortunately for us, the much-hyped moment is actually more of a steamy make-out session than just a smooch!

“After living with self-loathing and disgust over not being able to accept himself, compounded by everything else that is going on in Will’s life, he’s tightly wound,” Massey told Soap Opera Digest, according to Radar Online. "Will allows himself to do something he wouldn’t normally do in a sober situation.”

Fun gay-relevant fact: Jesse Kristofferson's famous father, Kris, co-starred with Barbra Streisand in 1976's "A Star is Born."

    • RE: Maryland Gay Marriage Debate Resumes In State Senate

Maryland Gay Marriage Bill Approved By State Senate

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Gay marriage is all but legalized in Maryland with the legislature giving its final OK Thursday to the law that is awaiting the expected signature of the governor.

The state Senate voted 25-22 for the law. The vote comes less than a week after the House of Delegates barely passed the measure.

Maryland will become the eighth state to allow gay marriage when Gov. Martin O'Malley – who sponsored the bill – signs the legislation.

Opponents, though, have vowed to bring the measure to referendum in November. They will need to gather at least 55,726 valid signatures of Maryland voters to put it on the ballot and can begin collecting names now that the bill has passed both chambers.

Senators rejected some amendments to the legislation Thursday. Proponents warned that amending the bill could kill it because gathering enough support for altered legislation in the House would be difficult.

Last year senators passed a similar measure by 25-21, but the bill died in the House after delegates rescinded their initial support citing concerns that it could violate religious liberties of churches and business owners who do not support same-sex unions.
