Uncheck - Updates & Privacy / Check - Notify me before installing updates ...
[This will prevent your client from updating automatically] ...
You don't have to uninstall [updated version to avoid conflict] ...
simply download from the recent version [that works, w/ no issues] and install ...
all your active torrents are present after downgrading is completed ...

by downloading version 3.5.5 from the link and unchecked the auto update and now I'm supposed to install the same file again from the link? Is that how to downgrade?

If the torrent version prompted you then you don't have to make anymore changes ..
see the version on Help it will show your current version ...
