Books with strong gay characters seem to limited to the following genres:
M/M trashy romance novels by straight women for straight women
M/M trashy erotica short stories by men for men and often fetish focused
Gay/lesbian/bi YA novels for teens
Gay/lesbian/bi mystery novels for adults
The YA novels are usually of a good literary standard, but I left my teen years behind a long time ago. Some of the mystery stuff is ok, but a lot of it is mediocre or a trashy mystery/romance mix.
