Results
SARS-CoV-2-naive vaccinees had a 13.06-fold (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.08–21.11) increased risk for breakthrough infection with the Delta variant compared to unvaccinated-previously-infected individuals, when the first event (infection or vaccination) occurred during January and February of 2021. The increased risk was significant for symptomatic disease as well. When allowing the infection to occur at any time between March 2020 and February 2021, evidence of waning naturally acquired immunity was demonstrated, although SARS-CoV-2 naive vaccinees still had a 5.96-fold (95% CI: 4.85–7.33) increased risk for breakthrough infection and a 7.13-fold (95% CI: 5.51–9.21) increased risk for symptomatic disease.
Depending on time frame & exactly what outcome, natural immunity alone was anywhere from 6 to 27 times better than vaxx alone, at preventing covid infection, symptoms & hospitalization.
"Hybrid immunity" (having both) was not studied here.
Similar results were reached by previous studies eg, USA "Cleveland Clinic" studies.
So the result in general is not new - but it will be new to some people, plus study itself is new, making it "news".
It looked at 2021, "Delta variant" era - does not address today - except, the immunology principles carry over & it would be amazing if today's situation were different.
Study found that both natural & vaxx immunity wane over time. Except vaxx wanes faster & more, so again, natural immunity wins a point.
This is info not advice. Everyone's situation is different.
And some people - perhaps younger men (cough) at risk for vaxx-related heart damage - may well find that further covid vaxx is medically unnecessary & bad, for them.
Other studies have found that natural immunity is good across variants ie. against new variants.
One possible reason is that the vaxx focus (too) narrowly on the covid "spike protein" which always changes in new covid variants - while natural immunity tends to cover the entire virus. In technical terms, natural immunity gives much broader epitope/paratope coverage including "conserved" parts of the virus, parts unchanged in new variants.
In layman's terms: If you are technically "unvaccinated" but you had covid before & recovered, nature has given you a good vaccine.
