With a representative expelling people out of the parlment room declaring that the ennemies of the democracy were unwelcomed, France had a majority of "rational" people saying yes, and some extreme traditionalists in the no, to them some anti-holland movements joined, the afterhours were of great joy however then the riots started.

My input … as with many other countries this will in a month or two completely disappear because well there is 0, totally zero impact in the french society besides more economic growth dued to turism and marriages.

However, the main right-wing opposition party UMP plans to delay its formal enactment by challenging the law in the Constitutional Council, which has one month to rule on whether the law conforms to the Constitution.

I'm more worried with religious groups and violence, the french constitution already supported equal rights as a base, plus there is the non descriminative act and pressure by the european human rights organisms.

That is GREAT news!!

I'm hoping Australia will be able to celebrate also in the future but unfortunately the conservative government is getting into power in all the Sates and soon the Federal government.

When the government changed in the State of Queensland they changed the Civil Partnerships laws and adoption and surrogacy laws also >:D

Here is an extract from the newspaper when the government changed:

"SAME-sex couples will no longer be able to enter into a "civil union" in Queensland - they will be known officially as registered relationships.

Under a further change to the previous government's controversial law, the Newman Government will rename the Civil Partnerships Act, the Registered Relationships Act."

Once again I am so happy for all the other countries that are progressing but very disappointed that mine isn't. Most people are very supportive of the gay community but they are very scared of gay marriage for some strange reason.

Hopefully with so many countries changing the laws more countries will understand that gay marriage isn't going to hurt anyone.

Myrea, you are right. The Constitutional Council has previously ruled that the issue of same-sex marriage was one for the legislature to decide. And since the legislature has already decided, UMP can do nothing about it. It's only a matter of time for the official enactment. There may be some protests, but I'm not worried about violence.

Ozyme, things may be looking backwards in Australia now, especially in the case of Queensland, but progress cannot be stopped, my friend.
It may not happen tomorrow, but soon all Australian states, all states in the US, all EU member states and several other countries in the world will be able to celebrate the right to same-sex marriage. There may be ups and downs, but progress cannot be stopped.

Australia is very gay friendly but not when it comes to marriage as yet but the support is growing. Religious groups are very powerful in Australian politics and they are against same-sex marriage.

I'm disappointed. I ALWAYS thought growing up that France was one of the most liberal countries in the world. But oddly Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, South Africa, Portugal and many others queued ahead of France in extending marriage rights to LGBT. I was shocked by this. And to my surprise there were larger protests in France than in the countries I've listed herein.

So somewhat bittersweet.

On the federal level in the US, much like in France and the Constitutional Council, there will be a fight if and when it becomes law of the land and, DOMA (defense of marriage act defining marriage as between one man and one woman) has already been ruled unconstitutional so that's something.

same with America: religious groups very powerful in US politics. We're winning by default tho- as the federal gv't has decided to allow individual states to dictate same sex marriage laws, those laws banning such unions are one by one being ruled unconstitutional. Pennsylvania the most recent US state to now fully legalize same sex marriage. 19 down, 31 to go!
