Gay people in science
-
I wonder what people think about gay people in science, or being gay in general.
I have gay and straight friends too, but only a few of them studies some field of science.
Do you have any thoughts? I've got confused… I know there are people who "can't understand being gay", that's ok, but I can't accept them insulting gay fellows just because of their homosexuality. :afr2:I don't know if there's anyone here studying or working science..
Any ideas are appreciated!

Being a chemist and working in in the industry for several year before getting into the education side. I did not run into may who were into science. If I did they were a biologist or zoology, not chemist. But Oklahoma doesn't make for a good supporting society of any gay person here. But in general the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields are hurting for qualified people any way here in the USA. So not many seem to make it through into the real world.

I know… I have a degree in chemistry and I am still studying chemistry and astronomy.
I plan to go to the USA, I hope that in big cities and in some states (California?) being different is more accepted...
I don't want to change subject just because many gay prefer to study art or other non-science subjects... so sad.
I also think about education at a university, but students can be so cruel. I don't know.

I teach at a technical college, the students could care less of my sexuality and that is in the Bible belt…

From my experiences attending OSSM (Oklahoma School for Science and Mathematics). I find there are many gay students, if not slightly more than the average (open) traditional schools. Perhaps these people are more accepting, or more open about these things, but when it comes to the career objectives of these students, I find they tend to hide their sexuality.
While these students tend to not hide the sexuality amongst their peers, they tend to hide, or fail to disclose it amongst their superiors/potential employers.
I think scientists in particular, are interested, as a whole, as not being perceived as being too controversial. To the point that they'd rather be perceived as controversial in their physical science rather than in their social science.

Im a 2010 Grad with a BS in chemistry and haven't been able to get into a decent career field, but speaking from personal experience in academia, I was the only flat out GAY chemistry major I knew. I live in a very liberal part of the south, so there were tons of gay people, but not many science minded ones. Nobody ever had a problem with it in my department. Im just a normal guy aside from the fact that I fuck dudes. Nearly the entire department knew i was gay, students and faculty alike, it was just never an issue unless someone else happened to take the topic to a conversation of dating or something that would lead back to sexual preference.
I graduated college and moved in with my partner, and since then have been living happily. I believe I have met less than 5 gay science minds in my life though. It is an odd and interesting point. When i was in college i always dreamed of finding another gay guy in the chem department, but it never happened. I am happily settled down now with an architect. He wouldnt know his ass from his elbow if you had to talk about it on a molecular scale, but im OK with this. I still love him
Also, in reguard to scientists being interesting as a whole and not necessarily social, maybe my experience was someone what anomalous, but most of my classmates were great people and extremely social and outgoing. Maybe its a Chemist thing, but I think we are awesome as shit in large groups

Right on top of my head, I can cite at least 10 students in the med school who are gay/lesbian. And some more who are suspected of being in the closet. And I know even more people in the graduate school of my university who are openly gay. So yeah, plenty of gay scientists and doctors (or future doctors), HAH!

I majored in Chemistry.

Biology and engineering, electrotechnics and informatics, medecine… all are populated with gays here (that and art studies xD), also while the students might worry or get some hard time (from other courses or whatever) profissionally NOONE CARES. Being a bigot here is turning into a faux pas.
