Im a 2010 Grad with a BS in chemistry and haven't been able to get into a decent career field, but speaking from personal experience in academia, I was the only flat out GAY chemistry major I knew. I live in a very liberal part of the south, so there were tons of gay people, but not many science minded ones. Nobody ever had a problem with it in my department. Im just a normal guy aside from the fact that I fuck dudes. Nearly the entire department knew i was gay, students and faculty alike, it was just never an issue unless someone else happened to take the topic to a conversation of dating or something that would lead back to sexual preference.
I graduated college and moved in with my partner, and since then have been living happily. I believe I have met less than 5 gay science minds in my life though. It is an odd and interesting point. When i was in college i always dreamed of finding another gay guy in the chem department, but it never happened. I am happily settled down now with an architect. He wouldnt know his ass from his elbow if you had to talk about it on a molecular scale, but im OK with this. I still love him
Also, in reguard to scientists being interesting as a whole and not necessarily social, maybe my experience was someone what anomalous, but most of my classmates were great people and extremely social and outgoing. Maybe its a Chemist thing, but I think we are awesome as shit in large groups
