Australia Passes Insane Surveillance Law

@raphjd said in Australia Passes Insane Surveillance Law:
So I found this alarming (as many of @raphjd's posts try to be), so I looked into it further... both with AU news outlets AND foreign ones...
To be honest, the foreign press hasn't really looked at this one - it's too new maybe?
But the Australian press is all pretty damning... seems the AU parliament passed a series of bills giving the Federal Gov't there SWEEPING rights to surveil their citizens (all under a guise of "protecting" the populace from "terrorists")
The problem with these kinds of laws is that they get abused. Federal Authorities will use these new powers against "regular citizens", and it's not hard to imagine investigators using these powers for personal gain (is my boy/girl friend cheating?)
So - where @raphjd has a well-earned reputation for yelling FIRE! when there is little more than an LED... in this case, there is indeed smoke and fire there! Especially because changes were proposed to protect individual rights - and provide some judicial oversight - but they were left out! There is no one "watching the watchers" - and that's RIFE for abuse and corruption!
Benjamin Franklin (not an Australian) once wrote:
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I'm absolutely shocked that you didn't downplay this, as you love to do with virtually everything I post.
BTW, as a liberal, I know that it has never dawned on you that I quite often copy the article/video title from the source.

I'll pass on the ridiculous label... and yes, you DO often quote your source... but...
Often, your source is a far-right-wing one that uses a "teaser" - from which you typically "launch" your tirade (which this post lacked - no tirade!). But often too (too often), when you actually read the ARTICLE - the WHOLE article - it doesn't actually back up say what the headline led you to believe it was going to say.
Quite simply, you seem to forget that many of these news outlets are (unlike the OLD network news of the past) trying to make a profit ... and profit means convincing people to read... and when there aren't sufficient REAL "horror stories" to do it, they make them up! At least they do in the headlines...
But, as I am want to say from time to time:
This ain't that
This is a legit story about another Gov't overreach into our as-yet uncodified right to privacy.
We need one! The problem, as I see it, is that religious conservatives see a right to privacy as a danger to their anti-abortion agenda (and rightfully so)...
That said - we're going to NEED a right to privacy... this won't be the END of Gov't intrusion into our privacy... not by a long shot!

Don't criticize my sources when you use sources that ignore all manner of things that make liberals look bad.
You have called Tucker a liar, despite the fact that Tucker has shown the exact video(s) of the person saying, whatever it is that he claims they said. He then reads from, and shows on screen, the official transcript from Shifty Schiff's secret hearing in the Bunker. He proved that they either lied while being a talking head on liberal "news" shows or they lied while being under oath in the Bunker.
Your sources never reported on any of that once the Bunker hearing transcripts were declassified.
It's also comical how you know so much about Qanon and their conspiracy theories, which ascribe to me, and other than pizza-gate, I don't know any of them.

As for the article, this isn't anything new.
GWB gave us the Patriot Act and Obama expanded it beyond anything GWB ever dreamed of. Now the Dems are here to finish Obama's work.
The UK's "constitution" only exists in your (generic) head. Several PMs and people running for PM have promised a written one, but they all lied. Gordon Brown was the last to promise a written constitution, but after becoming PM, he immediately backtracked on that promise.
The Scottish government has been shitting on our legal and human rights via various laws and they are ramping up the draconian laws every time we turn around.
Australia and NZ don't ascribe rights in their constitutions, so they can shit all over their people as they please.
