Memes - What are they?
-
I know I sound like a total grandma right now, but I have to bring it up. It's been a few years now since the pop culture of 'memes' had arrived and I have bitten my tongue for a while. But now I just have to understand what memes actually are. I see meme pages and meme edits, but I still have no clue as to what it is.

MEMES ARE JOKES ORIGINATING ON THE INTERNET WHICH ARE USED, REMADE AND REFERENCED BY SEVERAL GROUPS OF PEOPLE. IT USUALLY STARTS AS SOME SORT OF INSIDE JOKE FOR A GROUP IF PEOPLE, AND THE GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE INSIDE JOKE AND KEEP RE-USING IT KEEPS EXPANDING UNTIL IT'S POPULAR ON THE INTERNET. ANYTHING CAN BE A MEME, IT DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE TO BE FUNNY.

It's something like an inside joke that goes out of control on the internet.

The word "memes" is a brainfart by (otherwise well-regarded and respectable) biologist Richard Dawkins, who likened the transmission of human culture to genes in one part of his book about biology, "The Selfish Gene." But Dawkins knew nothing about the transmission of information in human cultures.
For the past 20+ years, "meme" more or less means any copycat trend on the internet.

Pretty sure memes are a frog that hates black people… could be wrong...
