Will the 'Golden Era' of Gay Sex Movies with proper storyline ever make a comeback?
-
Dear fellow porn aficionados,
I would like to speak my mind and have your thoughts on it...
As a dinosaur , I can attest that the gay sex movies have come a long way and evolved tremendously. From appreciating videos with just actors talking with no voice over but porn music background, to total soap opera with proper dialogue and serious full bush realness, to just immediately fucking.
The sweet spot in my humble opinion of the 'golden era' of gay sex movies with a proper story line is from 1980 to 2015. Aside from the hilariously tragic acting at most times, the storyline is one that heightens the fantasy for porn akin to children watching fairy tales with a happy ending, All pun intended, corny gay daddy joke, thank you, thank you!
It is great that now with advancement in technology we have Onlyfans and all other sorts of fans which allows instant intimacy and gratification. However this might angle more towards a "home-made", faux "amateur" theme only not as varied and colorful as during what I deem as the 'golden era'.
It depresses me that big production studios such as Titanmen and Hot House are no longer producing such quality content like they did in the 'golden era' however I do sincerely appreciate the likes of producer such as Men.com and Chi Chi La Rue who has stayed true till today and still does maintain a certain top notch quality from the golden era. Another relatively new producer that I appreciate is Ridley Dovarez, who although has always done a very fetish and dominating inclined story line is made to a very high standard.
Is there anyone else who understand my thoughts?
Does anyone feel the same way like I do or are all of you in here the different types of berries from the new generation that consider the above archaic and obsolete?
Any movie producers in here able to foresee if the 'golden era' will ever come back or is the subscription-based social media platform for purchasing original content only to stay for good?
Hope to hear comments
Sincerely,
Cazzoguy the T-Rex

@cazzoguy To be really honest with you we are currently living in a time where most individual content creators can deliver a sex that looks plausible, vivid, visceral, and yet it's still well produced. It's hard to believe people will give up either the human aspect or the professional aesthetic when they can have both, so it'll be inevitable for the industry to adapt to both the human aproach AND the production value.
What used to be a niche decades ago is now standard, and vice-versa. So we are already starting to see a few people trying to stand out from all the pseudo-amateur garbage. If you take for instance all films by Noel Alejandro, they're all very artsy and aesthetically beautiful, to an extent that it doesn't even look like porn sometimes. There are also some more elaborate and artistic films from the regular players such as Cocky Boys and MEN.
If you take the amateurish look you described, that used to be a niche back then, today it's pretty much the norm, there are big companies with huge budgets spending to look as amateur as they can without giving up all the marketing bullshit they're used to, and unfortunatelly it's a process that's still in progress, that's still the type of content with the highest demand so if we ever are to overcome that, and I think we will, it won't happen fast enough.
We might soon have a boom in "porn with plot" films but it'll definitely be a niche rather than a comeback of the golden era where it used to be the norm.

Hi @ianfontinell sincere thanks for your prompt and very much insightful reply. I am sincerely touched that someone really understand my point of view. I guess it is inevitable that the standard norm will no longer be the good old "porn with plot" and it becomes a niche.Looking on the bright side, better having the niche than it being totally extinct like a dinosaur. Lol! Personally for me I am grateful that there are countless gay movies now easily available online from the golden era to watch and reminisce upon.
My hope, which is a long stretch, is that there will be a time in my lifetime that the quality of videos can be simply improved to HD quality from the comfort of your own home (a few clicks, no major software and advanced editing skills necessary) especially those from the 80s and 90s because aside from the video quality, everything else is top notch!
Here is a little something for you to enjoy depicting what I mean with regard to video quality improvement. You have to watch the original then remastered, spot the clarity it is amazing!

I am a dinosaur as well and I understand what you mean regarding the "golden age" of porn. My favorite was from around 1988 to 2010. I love the "old" Sean Cody stuff as well.
I scratch my head at what some studios are putting out there today. For example, you mentioned MEN.COM. I love their old content. But this new stuff they are putting out is really off-putting to me. Screaming women and really crazy story lines distract from the scene. And it's a shame because the models are still HOT and most are barebacking. This should be an easy thing for these studios. -
@cazzoguy There is even some vestige of story line in many 1980's-era films, although not all.
I think a lot of it has to do with how people use porn: Is it a fantasy, where we see ourselves entering into the scene, perhaps as one of the characters? I find that to be very rewarding.
Or, is it just showing body parts interacting with each other, often belonging to models that barely sport a double-digit IQ. I don't find that stuff interesting even if it's recorded in 16K super-duper-HD that shows every pimple left over from razor burn.
Will we see story lines come back? I don't know. That takes work, and thus money...and these days, a teenager with an iPhone can make something for free and still get money for it.
Time will tell.

@mjamesman70 gay men paying big bucks to jack off to a representation of their own internalized homophobia, that's what's happening right now.
This makes it easier to reminisce on the "golden era" even when you haven't actually lived it, which is why I relate so much to what y'all are saying.

@mjamesman70 hello fellow prehistoric creature!
What a sweet spot 1988 to 2010 is! Fully agree on your comment of MEN.COM storyline which has now become more comedic based with too many punch lines rather than tasteful gay porn. Very tragic indeed as they did not start that way. I wonder if they have a change of director? They should hire seriously seasoned players to the likes of Joe Gage or Chi Chi La Rue to be their dedicated porn director.
Are you familiar with the movie titled Crossing the Line Cop Shack 2 from year 2007 by TitanMen and directed by Joe Gage? Specifically Scene 3 featuring Leah Wilde, Scott Wilde and Logan Robbins. This is the kind of standard that I want to see MEN.COM do which they are definitely capable with the right porn director. The storyline, videography and acting truly titillates the viewer all the way till the end, so memorable!
Another one which was my favourite from their inception to circa 2015 is menatplay.com. During the said period, they have used actors so devastatingly gorgeous that they set the bar so high but after 2015 the quality in terms of the looks have eroded and now became too typical, no more unique features and they keep recasting the same men. If you followed menatplay from the start, then you will know the video they made entitled Switch staring Antonio and Carl Wilde from back in 2005. That is such a gold standard in every way especially considering the guys were communicating to seduce/be seduced yet there was no verbal communication!
One thing I notice porn nowadays, however big the production is, there is this sense of "rush just to make a quick buck" rather than producing a really solid piece of work that will be remembered by many. I guess we the dinosaurs had it better as the anticipation we had of productions from back in the day is really way, way more exciting and worth it.

@eobox91103 hi there!, the kind of immediately-direct-to-sex-no-questions-necessary-amateur-dumb-and-full-of-cum was a genre tastefully done and perfected only by the pioneer Paul Morris of Treasure Island Media. Onlyfans and the likes try hard to replicate its style but it is a very difficult act to follow and when they fall short it gets really lame fast e.g. 2 guys sitting side by side just wanking and looking at the camera. Is really pathetic.
For quality storylines to come back, I feel hope springs eternal. Sad.

I very much appreciate the stuff with a bit of a fantasy plot before sex. The image quality today is so much better, but the direct to the urologist and proctologist close up view loses me and all the in/out starts looking the same and gets boring very fast.
Will we ever have things like Jean-Daniel Cadinot full stories with hard core sex or even the early Falcon International or BelAmi movies? I doubt it, they took time and much more creativity to make that is not rewarded today. Most are now designed for the web and to allow people to get off quickly.
It's not that different than young people now seeing something like a letter or email with full paragraphs and actual punctuation as hopelessly boring and prefer/use a text with everything abbreviated and a couple of emojis. -
@Mrker1234 said in Will the 'Golden Era' of Gay Sex Movies with proper storyline ever make a comeback?:
Most are now designed for the web and to allow people to get off quickly.
And the irony, for me, is that I find all the "pre-sex" stuff to be more arousing: The search, the look, the returned glance, the first brush of hands together, the first kiss, etc. Those are the things that are unique with each person. Once we get into the territory of a medical textbook, it's all pretty much the same on screen. (In real life, sex is more exciting and individualised because people talk to each other, even if only to say "what do you like?" or "please lick my elbow." One doesn't have that in porn because even with good story lines there's a director dictating the action.)

That's a very interesting and perceptive connection! I think the similarity here is noting many peoples' failure to distinguish between something functional to be done quickly and something to be savored over time. An encounter with a passing jogger who just wants a quick suck/cum/zip back up will soon be as forgotten as a text message saying "running late see you in 10." For that matter, forget the jogger--whip out the porn and soak a tissue in less than a minute.
While I don't consider myself "old" or even "middle-aged," I appreciate the care involved with writing cards/letters and thus I send them as well. I know that many years from now I will thumb through them fondly remembering the people who wrote and handled them. One doesn't get that feeling pulling an old email from an archived hard drive.

In my late 30's now, and I grew up exploring homosexuality with guys like Jeff Stryker, Tiger Tyson, lots of the Latino Fan Club. I also jumped over to web studio produced vids (sean cody, Corbin Fisher, Dink Flamenco Activey Duty... the list goes on).
For one reason or another I've found myself longing for the older style type of videos. The more modern content really doesn't get my interest and to be honest it seem like it's just overly processed. Sure the guys look nice, but it's almost like it's too perfect/polished. There was something about the way golden era films were produced that gave them a more sensual nature.
This is just my opinion here, but the overall look of masculine males has changed too. Male actors in more recent films have a very pristine look to them, which looks nice but still doesn't do it for me. Men in the Golden Era had a guy next door or rough around the edges look about them.
You're not alone OP. I feel like I was born in the wrong era sometimes, lol.

... Welllllll, thing is those movies had a budget and cost money to produce, a cam in a bedroom for onlyfans is basically as cheap as it gets... We also live in more prude times, late 60's to the 70's was peak sexual liberation, you could see porno in most theaters. Our best chance is Erotica and softcore movies being made by indie film lovers... but the fun aura of some films is probably lost, you need lighting a good cenography and camera men with poetic sensual angles, and actors who can actually give a non cringe dialogue line with some emotion etc... tetatita kinda did that a bit just did not went porno enough...

Unfortunately, the attention span of a regular person has gotten so bad. Possibly also life is fast these days with people doing 2 jobs a day, or becoming to tired after burning themselves out in a demanding job.
People favor the short form, high impact video like in Tiktok, or in porn, Onlyfans.
Watch the vid, get your rocks of in 3 minutes max and done.
