Colin Powell, the trailblazing soldier and diplomat whose sterling reputation of service to Republican and Democratic presidents was stained by his faulty claims to justify the 2003 U.S. war in Iraq, died Monday of COVID-19 complications. He was 84.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Powell spent 35 years in the Army and rose to the rank of four-star general before becoming the first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His oversight of the U.S. invasion of Kuwait to oust the Iraqi army in 1991 made him a household name, prompting speculation for nearly a decade that he might run for president, a course he ultimately decided against.
Powell instead joined George W. Bush’s administration in 2001 as secretary of state, the first Black person to represent the U.S. government on the world stage. His tenure, however, was marred by his 2003 address to the U.N. Security Council in which he cited faulty information to claim that Saddam Hussein had secretly stashed weapons of mass destruction. Such weapons never materialized, and though the Iraqi leader was removed, the war devolved into years of military and humanitarian losses.
In announcing Powell’s death, his family said he had been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s longtime aide, said he had also been treated over the past few years for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that impairs the body’s ability to fight infection. Studies have shown that those cancer patients don’t get as much protection from the COVID-19 vaccines as healthier people.

Colin Powell, while vaccinated, was being treated for cancer: multiple myeloma - a blood cancer that decimated his immune system. Remember: for the vaccine (any vaccine) to work, there has to be an immune system for it to enhance! Sadly, General/Secretary Powell's immune system was badly weakened - not just by the cancer, but also by its treatment - making any vaccine of far less of a benefit to him.
THIS IS WHY it is important for even vaccinated people to wear masks in public! You never know whether that diner next to you, or fan seated next to you, or patient next to you in the waiting room - has cancer, or is diabetic, or has active HIV...

Israeli death tolls from COVID-19 aren't significantly higher than other places... their current (8-day average) of test positivity is just 1.5% (very low) - a testament to their nearly 71% partially or fully--vaccinated rate (65% fully vaccinated)...
But, "one of the most vaccinated countries in the world", Israel is not...
- The UK (where @raphjd, the Russian Troll Doll claims to live) is ahead of Israel in vaccination rates: 72% fully or partially vaccinated, 66.5% fully vaccinated.
- UAE has the world's highest partial vaccination rate of 95%, with a fully vaccinated rate of about 85%
- Cuba is still playing catch-up (after initially being denied assistance by some vaccine providers, and eschewing the 1-dose J&J style vaccines): 86% have at-least 1-dose, but only 60% fully vaccinated - one of the widest margins in the world because they tried so hard to get those FIRST SHOTS into arms of citizens!
Israel, like the US and Germany and well, like a lot of the world right now, is "in the middle of the pack" when it comes to vaccination (and death) rates...
