On 12 Jan 1981, Richard Rivera killed an off-duty cop, Robert Walsh, execution-style in NYC.
This was part of an armed robbery, with 4 other criminals.
"As the hero off-duty officer identified himself as a cop and reached for his gun to try to stop the robbery, Rivera shot him in the shoulder. Rivera then walked over to the officer as he lay helplessly wounded on the floor, pressed his gun to the cop’s head and blasted him again, authorities said."

FUCK whatever he's done in the past 40 years (I don't have any idea!) That one thing he did 40 years ago should define everything else for the rest of his life!

How the hell would I know whether he's a liberal or conservative... the fact is, I'm a Christian, and I believe in redemption... not easy-peasy "I said I was sorry" forgiveness, you DO have to pay the piper! But redemption IS (and should be) possible!
If the assault on the cop was 5-years ago (vs FORTY), I would likely be far less keen on believing he was a suitable candidate.
Mind you - I have no idea whether this guy is worthy of the appointment or not - what I'm speaking to is solely the fact that his 40-year-old crime should not, in and of itself, preclude him from serving...
Maybe there are other reasons he's unfit... I don't know...

I don't question whether it is a provocative appointment... I've said from the beginning that I haven't (and don't really care to) looked into this guy's resume... all I'm saying is that something he did 40 years ago shouldn't, by itself disqualify him!
