Problems with dynamic local IP
-
Recently I've bought a WiFi to Ethernet bridge dongle. I made it to work, connection is good, speed is good, no complaints. However, I now have a problem with my forwarded ports.
I forwarded ports so Deluge would communicate with the GT servers successfully in the past. But now it seems my local IP address is changing every couple of hours, or even less. So my file sharing stops working all the time and I have to go into the router's settings and port forward a new rule with the new local IP. It's a pain, and I'm not around the computer all the time, so it really is a problem.
Do any of you guys know how I can somehow fix this? Like, make my local IP fixed and not dynamic or something?
(Sorry if the terms I used weren't correct)

@bobi1990 Have you tried going to your router and setting a static IP number for your bridge's MAC address?
If you do not have access to your router's settings, you could try to set a static IP number for the network card (making sure to not use an IP number that is within the DHCP range).

You have 2 options, depending on how technically competent you are:
- You can login on your router, and if it's supported in your router, you can make your system have a "reserved" IP address. This way, whenever your system asks for an IP address, the router will ALWAYS assign the same one.
- You can open the network settings on your PC (I would NOT do this on a laptop!) by using the ncpa.cpl command
o right-click the Ethernet (or wireless) adapter you're using and select Properties
o Select (being careful to NOT un-check the box for) Internet Protocol Version 4 (TC/IPv4) and again click Properties
o Change the IP address and DNS settings to the correct values
NOTE: You can obtain your current values by issuing the DOS command ipconfig /all at a command prompt, or using the status option on your adapter up at the first step....
o Be careful - get something wrong here, and you'll be offline in a jiffy!
If I had to offer a preference, I would STRONGLY prefer the router-based "reserved" IP address... different routers may call it other names, and some cheap consumer routers don't offer it at all... dig into the manual for your router to find out...
Good luck!

@bi4smooth @Ricky Thanks for your responses. I'll try to link my device's MAC address to an IP through the router's settings. I hope I can find that option if there is one at all there hahaha

@bi4smooth @Ricky Okay, I tried with the "DHCP IP Reservation" option. I typed my MAC address and the local IP I wanted. The status column says "Not Active". Eventually the reservation disappears from the list and it's like I've never done anything. My local IP keeps changing...
-
@bobi1990 I think I somehow made it to work, at least for now.
-
@bobi1990 It doesn't work again... I don't know what is wrong here, but the reservation always disappears, and I'm back to dynamic IP...
-
@bobi1990 Which router or modem do you have? When you make a change, do you reboot the router and your computer?
-
@ricky My router is Technicolor CGA2121.
Whatever I do it doesn't work. I try to reserve the IP by MAC address but it doesn't work. It keeps changing... I tried many things both in my router's settings and in the WIFI dongle settings. Nothing works. My local IP keeps changing to a higher number every half an hour or so...

@bobi1990 There is a Manufacturer support page for that modem at https://www.normann-engineering.com/en/products/919/technicolor-cga2121/
But this manual on that page does not give enough information:
https://www.normann-engineering.com//support/manuals/CG2121_Quick Start.pdfThere are several possible manuals in different languages at https://www.google.com/search?q="Technicolor+CGA2121" - please look at these to see if one of those might work for you.
If all else fails, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may have a Help or Tech Desk.
What about setting a static local IP number for your network card in the Network Connections menu? (Make sure to set one that is not in the IP range assigned to DHCP.)
-
@ricky I think I made it work, but it may stop working soon lol
I just changed the lease time in my router DHCP settings. Now the assigned IP lasts longer. Maybe that's just a workaround but I haven't had a reassignment in over a day so that's good.
