Facebook has launched a ‘custom gender tool’ that includes a free-form field alongside 58 existing optional identities.

Type ‘T’, for example, and a list of options beginning with ‘Trans’ appear.

Facebook says it listened to a network of LGBT advocacy organizations to source the list.

One year on, the options have expanded to include the free-form field.

“Now, if you do not identify with the pre-populated list of gender identities, you are able to add your own,” the company said in a statement.

“As before, you can add up to ten gender terms and also have the ability to control the audience with whom you would like to share your custom gender.

“We recognise that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way.”

Ahead of this year’s Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras there are also Facebook Pride Stickers to signify your gender, sexuality and other interests.

A study out of Finland has suggested that men who frequent a sauna are much less likely to die a premature death.

The researchers studied nearly 2,400 middle-aged Finnish men and found those who visited saunas between four and seven times-a-week were 40 per cent less likely to die than those who only went once-a-week.

It found the men that visited the saunas more frequently were 63 per cent less likely to have a fatal heart attack, 48 per cent less likely to die of heart disease, and 50 per cent less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

"Further studies are warranted to establish the potential mechanism that links sauna bathing and cardiovascular health," the study concludes.

Dr Rita F. Redberg of the University of California said:

"Although we do not know why the men who took saunas more frequently had greater longevity (whether it is the time spent in the hot room, the relaxation time, the leisure of a life that allows for more relaxation time or the camaraderie of the sauna), clearly time spent in the sauna is time well spent."

The Victorian AIDS Council (VAC) is partnering with Rainbow Families Council for an upcoming community forum We Are Family: Queer Families 2015 at ChillOut.

The forum aims to discuss the triumphs and challenges faced by families from gender, sex, and sexually diverse communities, with a particular focus on those living in regional and rural Victoria.

“Over the past several months, these community forums have been a great opportunity for VAC to open up the discussion about a range of issues affecting the communities we serve,” said VAC CEO Simon Ruth.

“ChillOut festival is the perfect opportunity to extend that format to those living in regional and rural Victoria. We are particularly excited that Rainbow Families Council have come on board for this event.”

The forum will feature a mix of speakers with experiences ranging from adoption law reform to transgender parenting to accessing support in regional areas. The event will even offer a platform to convey the perspective of children who have been raised in rainbow families.

Rainbow Families Council Co-Convener Amelia Bassett will be one of the panellists for the event.

“LGBTI-parented families are everywhere. They are creating communities in rural and regional Victoria in increasing numbers. ChillOut Festival is a unique opportunity to share stories and make connections in a fun and family-friendly atmosphere,” she said. “Rainbow Families Council is proud to be part of a conversation about current and new frontiers for rainbow families which draws on the diverse experiences of parents, carers and children.”

A new study has found homeless LGBTI youth are trading sex for food and a place to stay.

The New York based study ‘Streetwise and Safe' conducted by Meredith Dank of the Urban Institute interviewed 283 young LGBTI people who had engaged in ‘survival sex’,

Dank was prompted to explore the issue of homeless youth and survival sex agyre an earlier survey discovered LGBTI youth were seven times more likely to have traded sex for food or a place to stay.

Dank said there was not enough good information about why LGBT youths made these decisions, so her study attempted to let them tell their stories.

She told TIME magazine: “I realized at that point that there was so much that we didn’t know about this population. And if we were really going to be able to serve the needs of these young people we needed to know exactly what their experiences were and the large breadth of their experiences.”

Fifty-eight percent of the young people Dank interviewed lived either in a shelter or on the streets. Almost half of the participants were male, and the report includes insight into the experiences of trans males.

A Catholic priest who is accused of molesting three boys had a large collection of gay porn, a court has heard.

Father Anthony McSweeney, 68, denies molesting three teenage boys between 1979 and 1981 at Grafton Close Children’s Home.

According to the BBC, the priest admitted to Southwark Crown Court that he bought gay porn in Amsterdam’s Red Light District alongside care home manager John Stingemore.

He kept the porn collection secret until he was discovered by his parish’s cleaner at St Peter’s in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

McSweeney said he was “ashamed” of his habit, and became emotional during his testimony.

The priest also admitted that Mr Stingemore – who died weeks before the trial – had shown him a clip of child porn, but says it did not raise “alarm bells”.

He said: He replied: “It didn’t occur to me, I can’t answer why. I suppose I was a bit surprised, a bit shocked and I just got rid of it.

“I just blanked it out, I guess. I didn’t give it any more thought. I’m desperately ashamed.”

Father McSweeney denies all charges.
