Growing up in a religious household, I think they bother so much because they truly believe they are "doing god's work". Whatever they read or hear preached in a church is what some come to take to heart and believe. They have this outlook that they need to… speak out on the sins people commit and try and mold the world into this pure and holy place they picture that god would want.

Of course though, there are many people out there who don't agree with this sort of logic. There are even a lot of religious people who believe that gays will get into heaven just like anyone else as long as they live a good/honest life.
