    • Conan O'Brien To Officiate Gay Wedding Of Staff Member To Mark TBS Anniversary

Conan O'Brien is set to commemorate his one-year anniversary at TBS in a groundbreaking way – by officiating an on-air wedding between two men.

As New York Magazine's Vulture blog is reporting, the talk show host will be marrying one of his show's longtime staff members and his partner when Conan tapes at New York's Beacon Theater, though producers have yet to determine when the actual nuptials will air.

Although O'Brien's previous NBC show, "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," taped in Manhattan for 16 years, such a wedding would not have been possible during that earlier run. New York became the sixth -- and largest -- U.S. state to legalize gay marriage last June, with Governor Andrew Cuomo being highly praised among LGBT advocacy groups for the legislation.

As TV Guide reports, late-night television previously hosted an on-air wedding in 1969, when more than 21 million viewers watched musician Tiny Tim marry Miss Vicki on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show."

A representative for O'Brien confirmed that the wedding would take place next week, but did not provide any additional details.

    • Oliver Callan,Denies Homophobia, Comes Out On Live Television

Over the weekend Oliver Callan, the Irish satirist and impressionist most famous for his "Nob Nation" and "Green Tea" radio shows, which poke fun at politicians and celebrities, appeared on Ireland's "The Saturday Night Show."

Callan has been making headlines in Ireland due to a controversy over several parodies of media personalities like Kerry GAA football star Paul Galvin that many have labeled homophobic.

Galvin himself said that watching Callan's impression of him – which implied that the reason the football star is such a fashion plate is all the years he's spent in the closet -- "on the couch with his parents" made for "the most excruciating night of his life."

Most expected Callan to appear on "The Saturday Night Show" to defend his sketches, however, they probably didn't expect him to go about it in exactly the way he did -- by coming out on live television.

When asked about the accusations of homophobia, Callan responded, "Let's get one thing straight, I'm not homophobe because I'm gay. Big deal!"

When pressed by the host of "The Saturday Night Show" with the comment "I think a lot of people will be surprised," the comedian responded, "Why? Judges do it. Actors do it. Teachers do it. Farmers do it," which triggered a huge round of applause from the studio audience.

Callan added, "I'm not going around singing about how I'm gay and I'm proud. I'm gay and I don't really give a shit to be honest."

Speaking about coming out, he said, once you're finally out of the closet you think "what was the fuss about there?…I try to have a laugh about it to get rid of the intolerance… try to normalize it a little bit."

In response to the Galvin controversy, the Mirror reports Callan said:

"I mean is it so horrendous to him that people might speculate wrongly that he's gay just for wearing man bags? "Paul Galvin claims he felt it was excruciatingly difficult to watch me poke fun at his fashion sense and him throwing shapes around Manhattan with a T-shirt that had a neckline down to his nipples… Straight men should not be insulted to be sent up like a gay."

    • Taiwan Gay Rights Parade Draws Thousands

TAIPEI, Taiwan (Associated Press) – Thousands of gay rights supporters have marched through Taiwan's capital, calling for increased tolerance and the enactment of anti-discrimination legislation.

The Saturday event is the ninth annual gay rights parade in Taipei, which has one of Asia's most vibrant gay communities.

The parade has attracted gays from around the world, with many marchers dressing up as prom queens, zombies or sumo wrestlers.

About a dozen men and women marched behind a Malaysian flag, deploring the absence of gay rights in the mostly Muslim country.

Ming Yueh of Kuala Lumpur said, "We hope to learn from Taiwan so we can help our friends back home."

Parade organizers called for legislation to wipe out deep-rooted gay discrimination in Asian cultures.

    • Cameron threat to dock some UK aid to anti-gay nations

The Commonwealth must have strong values, David Cameron says

David Cameron has threatened to withhold UK aid from governments that do not reform legislation banning homosexuality.

The UK prime minister said he raised the issue with some of the states involved at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia.

Human rights reform in the Commonwealth was one issue that leaders failed to reach agreement on at the summit.

Mr Cameron says those receiving UK aid should "adhere to proper human rights".

Ending the bans on homosexuality was one of the recommendations of an internal report into the future relevance of the Commonwealth.

Mr Cameron's threat applies only to one type of bilateral aid known as general budget support, and would not reduce the overall amount of aid to any one country.

Malawi has already had some of its budget support suspended over concerns about its attitude to gay rights. Concerns have also been raised with the governments of Uganda and Ghana.
      British empire

Mr Cameron told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that "British aid should have more strings attached".

But he conceded that countries could not change immediately, and cautioned that there would be a "journey".

"This is an issue where we are pushing for movement, we are prepared to put some money behind what we believe. But I'm afraid that you can't expect countries to change overnight.

"Britain is one of the premier aid givers in the world. We want to see countries that receive our aid adhering to proper human rights.

"We are saying that is one of the things that determines our aid policy, and there have been particularly bad examples where we have taken action."

Mr Cameron said he had spoken with "a number of African countries" and that more pressure had been applied by Foreign Secretary William Hague, who deputised for him during parts of the summit.

Some 41 nations within the 54-member Commonwealth have laws banning homosexuality. Many of these laws are a legacy of British Empire laws.

The discussion in the Ugandan parliament of an anti-homosexuality bill in 2009 sparked particular controversy, and earlier this year Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato was beaten to death in a suspected hate crime.

Nigeria's Senate is currently discussing a bill banning same-sex marriage, that includes penalties for anyone witnessing or aiding a same-sex marriage.

A spokesman for the Department for International Development said that budget support, which accounts for about 5% of the UK's annual aid budget of £7.46bn, is conditional direct assistance to governments. To qualify, recipients must adhere to rules on poverty reduction, respect of human rights, good governance and domestic accountability.

Malawi recently had £19m of budget support suspended following various infractions including poor progress on human rights and media freedoms and concern over the government's approach to gay rights, the DfID spokesman said.

Reacting to the news, Uganda Radio Network journalist, Charles Odongpho, said he was puzzled by the move.

"I welcome any move to pressure our government to be respectful of democratic values and human rights but speaking as a Ugandan I think we have much more important issues to deal with than the rights of homosexuals.

"This is your money and you know where you want to put it but we face very serious issues of corruption, poverty, education and hunger. These are the most critical issues for us, not homosexual rights."

Appointing a human rights commissioner to address this and other human rights issues was one of the 100-plus recommendations of the internal report, by the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group, which includes former UK foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind.

However, objections from a number of countries blocked adoption of the recommendation, according to Australia's prime minister Julia Gillard, speaking at the end of the three-day summit in Western Australia.

Besides the homosexuality rights issue, Sri Lanka's human rights conduct also came under scrutiny at the summit. The country will host the next head of government's meeting in two years' time.

Sri Lanka's army has been accused of war crimes during the civil war with the Tamil Tigers.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said he will boycott the 2013 summit unless there are major reforms in the country.
      Succession question

In earlier comments, Mr Cameron said there had to be a "proper, independent exercise to look into the whole issue of what happened, and whether there were war crimes, and who is responsible" in Sri Lanka.

BBC correspondent Nicholas Witchell said the summit had been seen as a "watershed" for the organisation as it "struggles to demonstrate its relevance, particularly on human rights".

Though the summit agreed to draw up a written charter and strengthen its ministerial action group, our correspondent said the outcome will be viewed by many "as a disappointing one and an opportunity missed".

Two other developments came from the summit - a reform of royal succession and action on polio.

It was agreed that sons and daughters of any future UK monarch would have equal right to the throne. They will also be allowed to marry Roman Catholics without giving up a claim to the throne.

The move was agreed by the 15 Commonwealth realms where the monarch is head of state.

And Mr Cameron joined the leaders of Canada, Australia and Nigeria, in committing tens of millions of pounds towards eradicating polio in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

The campaign will be supported financially by Microsoft magnate Bill Gates.

    • Attack On Gay Student By Bully At Union-Scioto High School In Chillicothe, Ohio

A shocking video of a gay student being beaten at Union-Scioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio, has surfaced reports Channel 6 WSYX news.

In the clip, which was filmed on a cell phone and then posted to Facebook, the attacker, who has not been named, can be seen waiting for the gay student, who wishes to remain anonymous, in a classroom.

Once the student arrives, the bully begins severely beating "the holy living crap out of him," says his mother.

Even though the boy tried to get away and asked "Why are you doing this?" the attack continued.

WSYX reports the student received a possible concussion and a chipped tooth.

The student also says that the perpetrator wrote "Check out the definition of a faggot" on his Facebook page two days earlier.

The attacker received three days suspension, but the mother of the gay student says that is not good enough and she is going to file charges.

She added, "For all those people that have hate in their hearts, they need to let it go because people are going to be who they are."

Anti-LGBT bullying is, sadly, not a new phenomenon and despite a very public outcry in recent months, it continues to rear it tragic, ugly head.

In recent weeks two students, Jamey Rodemeyer and Jamie Hubley, both committed suicide after being subjected to bullying because of their sexuality.

      Towleroad adds:
"An anti-bullying bill is pending in Ohio's legislature. Ohio House Bill 208 would add sexual orientation, gender identity, and other enumerated protections to Ohio’s anti-bullying law without changing the general prohibition against any bullying or harassment. Proponents of the bill are seeking testimony in the House Education Committee, according to Equality Ohio, but the bill has not been a priority of the committee."

    • Commonwealth: Time for a Change

Right now, almost 80 countries around the world make it a crime to be gay, lesbian, bi or transgender. In 10 of those nations, you can be sentenced to death or life behind bars. The majority of these nations share a connection - they are members of the Commonwealth - an organization bringing together 54 nations to collaborate on politics, culture and economic development.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma

The Commonwealth leaders are gathering this week in Perth, Australia where Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, just gave a courageous speech calling on each of the Commonwealth nations to finally end discrimination and criminalization of LGBT people. It's historic, but hardly a done deal: Forces within the Commonwealth are working double-time to silence Sharma and others, giving nations that send gays and lesbians to jail a free pass for yet another year.

We need to support Secretary General Sharma and show the other heads of state that a massive global outcry is bubbling up in their own countries and demanding fairness.

Piyah Martell, AKA Honey B Diva, Transgender Performer Born With Caudal Regression Syndrome, Talks About Making Videos, Lady Gaga

Piyah Martell – aka Honey B Diva -- has become an Internet sensation with her YouTube cover videos of songs by artists like Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey.

The singer and performer, who was born with a rare condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome which kept her spine and legs from fully developing in the womb, uses a computer given to her by her godmother to create and edit her own videos. She also shares videos documenting her everyday activities -- like walking on her hands through a shopping mall -- so that the world can see what living her life is like.

We caught up with Piyah, who told her parents she was trans when she was 15 and began taking hormones earlier this year, to find out more about making her inspirational videos, why Lady Gaga means so much to her, and her message to all the haters out there.

How did you first get started making your videos?
That happened in 2008 when I first got my laptop. It was donated to me by my godmother -- she got it from her work. I was just exploring the computer and I knew it had a webcam and I just started recording myself and making music videos.

    • Morgan Tsvangirai,Zimbabwe Prime Minister, Backs Gay Rights For New Constitution

Though he's previously supported his country's notoriously hostile stance on gays and lesbians, Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai now says he wants LGBT rights enshrined in new constitution, the BBC is reporting.

At present, homosexual acts are currently prohibited in Zimbabwe, as they are in most African nations where homosexuality is seen as un-Christian and un-African. As Pink News is reporting, President Robert Mugabe has previously condemned LGBT people on several occasions, once calling them "worse than pigs and dogs."

Tsvangirai similarly dismissed previous calls for LGBT rights protection in his nation, going as far as to say he "totally agreed" with Mugabe's views. But now, he is coming out against that rigid stance. "As long as it doesn't interfere with anybody, who am I to define what individual [one's] opinion is going to be as far as their sexual preferences are concerned? To me, it's a human right," he tells the BBC.

As The Guardian is noting, it's undoubtedly a surprising change of heart for Tsvangirai, who once said, "Women make up 52% of the population … there are more women than men, so why should men be proposing to men?" Though Tsvangirai's reversed views were quickly championed by LGBT bloggers and various human rights advocates around the world, his spokesman was quick to clarify that the prime minister "still believes that "the issue of homosexuality is alien in Africa," according to the AFP. "However, he is a social democrat," Luke Tamborinyoka is quoted as saying. "What he was saying is that ordinary people's rights must be respected as long as they do their things in private."

Last year, two gay rights activists in Zimbabwe claimed to have been abused and tortured after six days in police custody, after being accused accused of possessing pornographic material and insulting Mugabe, The Guardian is reporting.
