Guinness Picks World's Longest Nose
Mehmet Ozyurek's colossal conk - measuring 3.46 inches - is officially the world's longest hooter.
(Sept. 17) – This nose knows no bounds.
According to Guinness World Records officials, Mehmet Ozyurek has the world's largest nose. Measuring 3.46 inches from bridge to tip, the Turkish national's schnoz has earned its spot in the hot-off-the-presses 2011 edition of the record book.
I have purposely refrained from picking on this guy's nose, despite having some rather juicy jokes just hanging there, waiting for me to pluck them. It's probably a good thing. though; nose-related humor is rather congested and is on par with crusted-over humor best left under seats or counter tops. You might think it's funny, but it's snot.

Russia Admits Staggering Losses of Museum Items
Revelations of insider theft at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, shown here in June, spawned a three-year review of the country's museums.
(Sept. 19) – Nearly a quarter of a million museum pieces from collections across Russia are missing and unaccounted for, the Ministry of Culture has determined after a comprehensive but unpublicized three-year inspection.
AOL News has learned that a consultant to the Museums Department of the Ministry of Culture, Lyubov Molchanova, told a seminar for museum workers in the southern resort town of Pyatigorsk last week that the probe had found 242,000 museum pieces missing. Of those, about 24,500 have been officially registered as stolen and are being sought by the Interior Ministry.
The Culture Ministry's press office has made no official announcement about the finding and offered no details on specific works of missing art. But Svetlana Nekrasova, head of the Museums Department, told AOL News that "the information stated by Molchanova is accurate" and confirmed that the astonishing figures reflected the ministry's most current information.
Nekrasova said that "the review itself was completed at the end of last year" but that the numbers may still change. Culture Ministry officials stressed that many of the missing items would likely be found in the course of organizing the museums' inventory -- some, for instance, may be in special locations for analysis or restoration.
But Molchanova also admitted at the seminar that many more have surely been stolen than the 24,500 registered with the authorities.
Reports of such apparently staggering losses would be hard to sweep under the carpet in the West. "It would be a scandal if a single significant work were stolen from a museum in the U.S.," said Stevan Layne of Layne Consultants International, a leading firm in the protection of cultural properties worldwide. "It happens, but it's usually a big deal."
And if an inventory of U.S. museum collections revealed a similar proportion of works unaccounted for? "You could see museums closing," he said.
Among the losses, according to a 2008 report on Russian television's Culture Channel, was a draft of a painting by Russian artist Ilya Repin, allegedly stolen along with unique works of china, firearms and other art objects, from the museum in the south-central city of Novokuznetsk.
Keeping track of Russia's cultural legacy, scattered in cities and towns spanning nine time zones, is a daunting task. The exhaustive review of Russia's museum inventories took three years and covered 1,881 museums with more than 63,000 employees and more than 73 million objects. "It's the first time in history that an investigation of museums on such a scale has been conducted," Nekrasova said.
The missing treasures throw the problems of Russia's rich museum system into stark relief. In 2008, Mikhail Piotrovsky, then the director of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, estimated that "more than half the country's museum holdings were in desperate need of complete repair and restoration."
The current probe was ordered by then-President Vladimir Putin in the wake of stunning revelations of insider theft at the Hermitage. At the end of 2004, Piotrovsky told a Russian news magazine that "pieces cannot be stolen from the Hermitage without it being noticed. Too many traps have been laid for crooks, you can't slip by them ..." Less than two years later, an internal review found 221 pieces worth tens of millions of dollars missing from the storehouses of Russia's most prestigious museum.
Larisa Zavadskaya, a specialist in decorative art, became the central figure in the scandal. She was an inconspicuous Hermitage employee making $500 monthly, whose family occupied a room in a communal apartment. Shortly after the internal review was announced, she suddenly collapsed and died of a heart attack at her workplace. Eventually, the authorities found in her room receipts for the sale of more than 70 of the missing Hermitage items, ranging from jewelry to icons.
In 2007, Zavadskaya's husband, Nikolai Zavadsky, was sentenced to five years of hard labor and ordered to pay $5 million in restitution to the Hermitage. He was eventually released on the grounds that the statute of limitations on the thefts had passed.
Together with reports of theft at other institutions, the scandals provoked an enraged Putin to order an exhaustive check on museum collections nationwide. He created a commission to oversee the review that included the state security agency FSB, the Attorney General's Office, and the Interior and Culture ministries. Nekrasova said that the Ministry of Culture continually reports to this commission.
Some items may be hard to find because of the manner in which many Russian collections were assembled. Over the years, the Soviet government confiscated masses of valuable possessions from individuals and the church, usually transferring them to museums. As a result, museum collections often include troves of articles better classified as antiques than museum pieces. Simple to dispose of and difficult to track, these are eternal temptations to underpaid museum staffers.

But the missing items could easily include big-ticket items -- world-class artworks and important antiquities. Soviet state policy frequently favored distributing valuable pieces to museums around the country rather than concentrating them in the capitals. That means that important artifacts and artworks can be found at any number of provincial museums, often inadequately funded and equipped, where the staff and even the administration may be quite vulnerable to pressure from any number of sources.Molchanova said as much to her colleagues at the Pyatigorsk seminar: "Some governors [of regions in Russia] like to do things like saying: 'Give me some things from your collections.' And the museum staff don't know their rights or just don't have the backbone to refuse."
The hope is that a close study of Russia's museum collections will produce a more transparent and responsible museum system. If collections are fully listed and pictured online, stolen items become harder to sell and and tracking the internal movement of items becomes more straightforward. Layne says that Russia's "management process is not as refined as it should be" and suggests that areas for modernization include increased "video surveillance, electronic access controls in collection storage rooms, much tighter key control, and policy and procedural control."
Whether these problems can be resolved, and how quickly, remains to be seen. But two things are clear: The Russian museum system has a major institutional problems, and the Russian government is making a substantial attempt to address them.

Indeed hornylevy is in good hands now and I will continue to monitor his quest. Lack of comprehension by anyone other than hornylevy is unimportant to this thread. Understandable for sure. I am doing all that I can to insure his safety while making an informed decision.
To be sure this is a dangerous path to take with out proper advice. The man I have put in touch with is vastly experienced with this lifestyle choice. When I approached him to assit hornylevy on this quest his first concern was for hornylevy's safety and well being both mentally and physically. RE: Guinness Introduces World's Smallest Cow…..
5 International Incidents Caused by an Animal
Animals are always screwing things up for us humans, if 80s slapstick comedies are to be believed. But sometimes animals' adorable tomfoolery goes beyond disrupting a wedding and making a cranky old man fall hilariously into the cake. Sometimes, they can start freaking wars.

Guinness Introduces World's Smallest Cow…..
A minuscule cow with a taste for contemporary music has been named the world's smallest by the Guinness World Records book.
Guinness said the sheep-sized bovine from the West Yorkshire region of northern England measures roughly 33 inches (84 centimeters) from hind to foot.
The 11-year-old cow is named Swallow and her owner, Caroline Ryder, said she would spend Thursday either grazing with her herd or listening to BBC radio in her cowshed. Swallow is a Dexter cow, a breed known for its diminutive stature, but is small even by Dexter standards.
She already has nine regular-sized calves and is pregnant with her 10th. Guinness said her youngest calf has already grown larger than she is. "Guinness World Records 2011" was published Thursday in the U.K.

Lady Gaga takes on John McCain over ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’
Can Lady Gaga succeed where gay rights activists in Washington so far have failed?
Everybody's favorite hangar-steak-wearing pop queen is pushing her more than 6.3 million Twitter followers to lobby the Senate ahead of a planned vote this Tuesday on repealing the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which bans gay members of the military from serving openly.
On Tuesday, Gaga, via Twitter, encouraged her "lil monsters" — as she refers to her legion of fans — to call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to schedule the vote. Reid promptly did and subsequently announced this in a Twitter message to Gaga herself. "Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so," Reid wrote.
But Republicans, led by Sen. John McCain, have threatened to filibuster DADT, which is included in a larger Defense Department budget bill. So on Thursday, Gaga, who is the most widely followed person on Twitter, directed her ire at McCain. "SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN is attempting to stop the DON'T ASK DON'T TELL repeal vote this Tuesday, with a filibuster," Gaga tweeted.
After explaining what a filibuster is, the pop star then urged her followers to lobby the Senate in order to keep McCain from blocking the vote. "All hands on deck Lil Monsters," she wrote. "We need 60 senators. Call your senator now."
Early Friday morning, Gaga posted a message on YouTube urging the repeal of DADT. In it, she calls out McCain, as well as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. Jim Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma who opposes the repeal. You can watch her appeal here:

So far, there has been no response from McCain, who has never been shy about exchanging messages with celebrities via Twitter. Earlier this year, McCain exchanged tweets with Snooki from MTV's "Jersey Shore." McCain, a skin-cancer survivor, assured the orange-hued reality-TV star that had he prevailed in the 2008 presidential ballot, he would have never imposed a tax on tanning beds.

Pope Meets Abuse Victims As Thousands Protest London Visit
Demonstrators gather in London Saturday for what would become the biggest protest of Pope Benedict XVI in his five-year papacy. The Catholic sex abuse scandal has clouded the pontiff's visit to Britain.
(Sept. 18) – Pope Benedict XVI met with five victims of priestly child abuse as part of his official trip to Britain, while thousands marched the streets of London in protest against his visit.
Benedict prayed with the victims and said that the Catholic Church is "continuing to implement effective measures to safeguard young people," according to a statement from the Vatican.
"He was moved by what (the victims) had to say and expressed his deep sorrow and shame over what victims and their families had suffered," the Vatican said.
Earlier in the day, Benedict offered one of his strongest apologies for the actions of priests who sexually abused children. Speaking at Mass in Westminster Cathedral, Benedict referred to the priests' actions as "unspeakable crimes."
"I think of the immense suffering caused by the abuse of children, especially within the Church and by her ministers," Benedict said. "I express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of these unspeakable crimes, along with my hope that the power of Christ's grace, his sacrifice of reconciliation, will bring deep healing and peace to their lives."
In previous visits to Australia and the United States, Benedict has also met with victims and apologized for sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests, The Wall Street Journal said.
The meeting with the victims took place at the Vatican's embassy to the United Kingdom. Bill Kilgallon, chairman of the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission, the church group that organized the meeting, told The Associated Press that the victims might not speak with the media.
On Friday, the pope addressed British dignitaries including former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher in a speech at Westminster, thanking them for the official invitation and praising British political and legal traditions. Prime Minister David Cameron was not present, as he was attending his father's funeral.
Hostility towards Benedict has been strong during this visit. Protesters took to the streets today, denouncing the pope's stance on birth control and the behavior of the Catholic Church in regards to the sexual abuse of children.
Protesters carried signs saying, "The pope is wrong – put a condom on," and "Pope protects pedophile priests." Organizers said they expected about 10,000 people in the march.
The protesters gathered in London's Hyde Park, while a crowd of Catholics rallied outside Westminster Cathedral.
Even before Benedict arrived earlier this week, notable figures such as comedian Stephen Fry and author Philip Pullman said that he should be not be allowed to visit the UK as a head of state, citing the Vatican's positions on birth control, abortion and gay rights.
Benedict's words of contrition received a cool reception from representatives of the victims of priestly child abuse

"We don't need a pope who is sad about crimes. We need a pope who will prevent crimes," Peter Isely of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said in a statement, according to the AP. "And his words prevent nothing."Margaret McGuckin, who was abused in the Sisters of Nazareth Orphanage in Belfast, took a more positive line in an interview with BBC News.
"I feel hopeful, I feel he knows he's hearing the outcry of the people here," McGuckin said.
Still, even McGuckin said she wished that the pope had gone further in discussing the role of the Catholic Church in covering up child abuse and protecting the perpetrators.
"He should have said about admitting the cover-up that they were responsible for and that it did go right up to the hierarchy," McGuckin said.
There was greater enthusiasm for Benedict's words among the faithful gathered at Westminster Cathedral.
"It was very important that he apologized for the abuse that has taken place," Ann Maria Hayden told The Daily Telegraph. "It showed a lot of humility on his part."
This is the pope's first visit to the UK. As part of his packed itinerary, Benedict has met with members of the royal family, spoken with the Archbishop of Canterbury and addressed the country's elite at Westminster Hall.
Six men are still being held in connection with an alleged plot against the pope. Police arrested the suspects on Friday, acting on a tip.
The men are all North Africans, including at least one Algerian. Police searched eight homes this morning, but offered no more details on the case, Reuters reported.
Benedict drew fierce criticism Friday when he appeared to link atheism with the horrors of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Speaking to members of the royal family in a speech in Edinburgh, Scotland, the pope, who was a member of the Hitler Youth, spoke of Nazism as a form of extreme atheism, and urged respect for "traditional values."
He sounded the same note in a short, philosophical speech at Westminster Hall Friday, warning against the "marginalization" of Christianity.
"There are those who would advocate that the voice of religion be silenced, or at least relegated to the purely private sphere," Benedict said Friday. "I cannot but voice my concern at the increasing marginalization of religion, particularly of Christianity, that is taking place in some quarters, even in nations which place a great emphasis on tolerance."
Benedict again emphasized the importance of religion in informing political life, saying that relying on reason alone contributed to 20th century totalitarianism and the historical slave trade.
The pope's visit will continue Sunday, when he is due to fly to Birmingham, the second-largest city in the UK, to beatify Cardinal John Henry Newman, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Newman was a 19th century writer and theologian who converted from Anglicism to Catholicism.

Why We're Scared Of Happy Meals
It's pretty much conventional wisdom that you don't head to McDonald's for a healthy treat. And, if you've seen Fast Food Nation, you'll know that the chain's offerings have got a whole lot of icky ingredients. Though we don't really like to think about that while munching on a Big Mac, NYC artist Sally Davies did, creating the Happy Meal art project that provides evidence that Mickey D's food really is the worst shiz you can put in your body.
Davies took a Happy Meal sized burger and fries, put it on her living room table, and as Bravo says, decided to "watch what happens." She photographs said meal every day, and 137 days into the project (with no end in site), the results are remarkable in the fact that they're really unremarkable. To some eyes, the burger and fries look exactly on the same on day 1 as on day 137.
