RE: What Methods do YOU Use to Catalog, Tag, and Manage your Movies & Torrent Files?
If you do not download the entire contents of the torrent, you will be forever listed on the tracker as a leecher for the torrent and won't get the type of traffic you would as though you were a seeder. Not to mention, with respect to saving the .torrent files, don't fool yourself. Last year we had a major server crash and lost a number of these .torrent files. By saving these .torrent files you ensure that in the event that the server should ever go haywire like that again, you have the ability to re-upload the torrent and get credit for it.
As well, when you're not listed as "seeding" the torrent, unless you have another torrent that is seeding, you won't get the seed bonus points for having it seeding. I suggest that its within your best interest to fully download the entire contents of the torrent, but ultimately, that is your decision to make.
Can I get an "Amen, brother"!

What Methods do YOU Use to Catalog, Tag, and Manage your Movies & Torrent Files?
I'm curious to learn what others in our community are doing to help them catalog, tag and manage their downloaded movies on their systems?
After accumulating movies and torrents over the past year, I struggle to find movies on my hard drives. I have employed my own search to find tools to help me manage my movies and content, but there seems very little out there that is truly effective in helping pull all the pieces together of my torrent library, my downloaded movie files, and help categorize, tag and catalog them in a way which is simple yet effective.
My own challenges will probably be similar to yours. Here I'll share both my challenges and work-around solutions that I am employing to help me in my endeavor to manage "the beast". I'd like to hear from you and understand what challenges you have and what tools, or techniques you may employ on your system to help in this endeavor.
My O/S: Windows 7
My Torrent App: uTorrent (Beta 3)
Hard Drive Configuration: 2 hard drives used specifically for my movie and torrent librariesI had employed a spanned virtual drive across multiple disks 24 months ago, but one of the drives failed and I subsequently could not restore my library. I started over (sigh) and decided to use multiple drives just to be safe. At some point I'll be able to afford Raid, but for now, just 2 physical drives.
uTorrent is configured to download all my torrents files into a dedicated sub-directory, and movies into another sub-directory.
Over time, this configuration has just piled on Torrent files with naming conventions which don't necessarily match physical file names. I've found that if I just double click a torrent file in uTorrent, it will open the sub-directory where the file is located, and highlight the file.
If you are like me, you may not be a fan of downloading all the associated image/picture files that accompany a movie when you download it. But, to be safe that I don't get dinged for not downloading all files associated with a torrent from the site's calculator, I download the image/picture files that may be contained with the movie in the torrent file. They gunk up my drive, and I don't need them, but yet there they are. So they are a housekeeping challenge.
Additionally, you will note that some torrent files download single movies, and some torrent files download multiple files which then are hosted in a created sub-directory. The problem for me is that as I try to bounce around viewing movies with a movie file player (I use GOM and a variety of others), I like to switch from one movie to the next with a simple mouse spin. Having some movies in a core directory and other movies in sub-directories, makes this effort somewhat problematic if not simply just inconvenient.
Further, with such a large library of movies now on my hard drive, there is no simple way to find specific types of movies depending on your mood. When I hook up with someone here at my home, I like to ask them if they enjoy porn, and if they do ask what kind of actors, movies, theme, sex activity, body types, etc. they enjoy watching. Just using the computer's file system, I've struggled to narrow down to a sub-group of movies that quickly match the person's description. So often I just pop "something random" onto the computer. For myself personally, I do enjoy at least hearing some background fucking going on while I'm having fun.
So my challenge from all this include the need to categorize my movies, and in this, I've found the sky is the limit in how many tags I want to create. The more tags per movie, the more work involved and time needed to put it together. But what library tagging tools are available for movies? I'm presently using Windows Live Photo Gallery, as it allows the incorporation of movies and an ad-hoc tagging system. Still, it's cumbersome. Any other suggestions of a great tool for tagging/cataloging movies?
Another challenge was how to work with those pesky sub-directories that are created from a multiple file torrent download; either due to multiple movie files or added images/pictures. I'm using the "relocate" function available in uTorrent. When you click on a torrent in your uTorrent application, it will show you how many/what files are associated with the torrent. I use this to move the picture files away into a single sub-directory which I've now dedicated to pics. I then move the actual movie files into a separate single sub-directory dedicated for the actual movie files. This relocate function has another benefit: you can change the file's name! If you are like me, you get frustrated with varying array of how members name files that are uploaded when creating a torrent / and subsequently downloaded onto your hard drive when you download the torrent. Using the relocate function, I can change the physical file name itself. I'm a little annal retentive, so I like my file names to have a specific structure; including the studio of production. You can even move a movie to another hard drive with this function!
So, lots of work - but the techniques certainly have the rewards to help clean up my library and help organize it. Still, time consuming. Ugh. I'm not crazy about using Windows Live Photo Gallery, at all, frankly, but it does give me tagging and incorporates movies directly into a single tool, a single window frame, with search capabilities to find specific sub-categories of movies that may fit any mood. Still, I would think there is something better out there.
So feel free to interact with this post, give your feedback and suggestions, share your own challenges and any tips, tools or process you employ! I'm hoping to learn from others, and maybe benefit even more who are struggling as well with this post.
Isn't this a fantastic site! Great site, great admins and moderators who give their time to help make it what it is.
