Are you sure you downloaded regular version and not non-codecs version? In Mint all codecs should work right out of the box.
Check if you have this package installed, http://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/non-free-codecs If not install it.
Otherwise try another video player (totem is quite good), maybe  VLC is bugged.
