    • RE: What's going on with "Upgrade"?

I finally saw it.  I really liked it!  It's my favorite film this year (keeping in mind that I haven't seen this year's Marvel movies and Incredibles 2, as I'm saving them for my birthday.)

NO SPOILERS, but I really liked the resolution to the mystery of whodunnit.  I thought it was an easy mystery to solve, but I was waaaaay wrong.  I also liked the ending.  I never saw it coming.

I haven't seen any of the Marvel movies from Black Panther onward because I'm saving them for my 49th  :cry2: birthday.  I intend to do the same thing next year for my 50th  :afr:

That being said, I'm very excited for the next Avengers film because of all the rumors I'm hearing about the possibility using it to introduce the Fantastic Four and the X-Men to the Marvel cinematic universe.  I also heard that they may introduce the Red Hulk, too, which would certainly explain Ross' conspicuous appearance in Captain America: Civil War.  I'd LOVE to see a Hulk/Red Hulk throwdown, with Ross beating the shit out of Banner for ruining his relationship with his daughter.

Even if no new characters are introduced, I'll still enjoy the hell out of it, because, you know, Marvel.

    • What's going on with "Upgrade"?

I have no idea what the fuck is going on with this movie and it's driving me insane.

A few months ago, I watched a trailer for an upcoming film called "Upgrade".  It was dynamite!  I watched the trailer over and over.  Then I watched an endless number of reaction videos of people who were as excited as I was.

      Youtube Video

Anyway, when June 1st rolled around, I was surprised to find that the movie wasn't at my local theater.  I thought the movie had gotten pushed back, like "The New Mutants" or "X-Men: Dark Phoenix", but it hadn't.   Eventually, I discovered that the film was indeed out, but in an incredibly limited release.  I would've had to drive over a hundred miles to see it.  I thought that the limited release must've meant that the movie sucks, but Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 86% audience score (?).   Baffled, I figured that I'd just have to wait a while for a wider release, but it never came.  And since the film is scheduled to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on August 28th, it probably won't get one.
      WTF????

It gets weirder:  I went to torrentz to see if I could download it, only to discover an OCEAN of fake Upgrade torrents.  Someone is going through a fuck-load of effort to bury any actual Upgrade torrents, which there seem to be none.   I mean, even on MAJOR studio releases like …..let's say.... "Black Panther", I didn't see ANY effort to fuck with downloaders!  l found one Upgrade torrent that seemed to be legit, but when I tried to play it, the audio track informed me that I would have to go to another site and download a special codec (NO... FUCKING.... WAY!!!).

Does anyone have any information about this film?  Has anyone seen it?  Does their marketing strategy (Widely released trailer for a barely released film) make any sense to anyone?  Is this "codec needed to view film" crap becoming "a thing" now?  Will all pirated movies soon require it?

Finally, another reason I'm so hung up on this fucking movie: If you go to Google and input "Poor man's Tom Hardy", one of the few names that pops up is Logan Marshall Green.  Right after I first heard Logan Marshall Green described as a poor man's Tom Hardy, I first encountered the "Upgrade" trailer.  This made me realize something interesting:

June 1st - "Upgrade" - Logan Marshall Green plays a man whose body is invaded by something that talks to him in his mind, makes him powerful, controls his body, corrupts him, and makes him kill.

Oct 5th - "Venom" - Tom Hardy plays a man whose body is invaded by something that talks to him in his mind, makes him powerful, controls his body, corrupts him, and makes him kill.

A bizarre coincidence that I had to share.

    • RE: Recommend me a decent tv series to start watching

My husband and I started watching "Breaking Bad" a few months ago.  We were totally obsessed with it.  It is truly great television.  We're now tearing through "Better Call Saul", the prequel/sequel to "Breaking Bad".  Excellent.

I'd also suggest "Rick and Morty".  The third season jumped the shark a bit (except for s03e01, which was PERFECT), but the first two seasons were funny as hell.

    • RE: The Flash. Please, please, please let's talk about it!

For you, if you haven't seen it. Your fourth point reminded me.

Thanks for the clip.  No, I hadn't seen it.  Great stuff.  I have no luck finding superhero humor clips on YouTube.  Feel free to recommend more.

For a Captain Cold vs Killer Frost fight they'd have to bring Capt back from his future death. I've been hoping that the Legends "breaking time" might bring both Reverse Flash and Captain Cold back. You think either are coming back?

I'm still trying to figure out why Wentworth Miller left to begin with.  I kinda thought "The Flash" had recharged his career (it seems that way in his IMDB page), so why leave "Legends" after one season?  More "Prison Break" to film?  In any case, I hope he comes back.  I'd love it if Barry went to another universe and encountered the REAL Rogues, wearing their REAL costumes and having their REAL powers.

As for finances, same is true of Green Arrow. Oliver became poor, Felicity ran Ray's company into the ground and yet they're able to afford that bunker with all the toys?

When Slade was attacking their wealth, Moira had Oliver and Thea sign papers to transfer some of their savings to a safe place.  I thought it was a trick by Slade to get every last dime, but nothing was ever mentioned about it, so I assume it was legit.  Therefore, I think Oliver has a few paltry millions left, which would explain his purchases.

Remember that Barry built Gideon. It might have been his trip in the Speedforce that gave him knowledge of advanced mathematics to make Gideon a reality.

I suppose.  I always thought that the reason Barry was able to create Gideon was because, well….let me paraphrase Wally West from a Flash comic I read years ago: "Speedsters like to move at superspeed whenever we can, thus creating lots of spare time.  We also don't sleep much, which gives us even more free time.  We tend to read during that time.  You can read lots of books while other people are sleeping, ...or blinking.  Trust me, never play Trivial Pursuit with a Flash."

Barry exhibited this ability during the show.  I believe he was doing research into running faster.  IIRC, he irritated one of the Wellses by doing this.  Anyway, I just assumed that Barry decided to devote himself to researching computer systems and, seconds later, created Gideon.

    • RE: The Flash. Please, please, please let's talk about it!

Is Barry the type of guy you go for?

The only Flash characters who've turned me on are Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), Mark Mardon the Weather Wizard (Liam McIntyre), Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell), Zoom (Teddy Sears) and Girder (Greg Finley).  There are probably others, but I can't think of any at the moment.

      What's up with Killer Frost/Catlyn?

Same shit, different season, I guess.  Now she's just switching back and forth without any tacky, glowing blue jewelry.  I wish they'd just get around to the Killer Frost vs. Captain Cold fight I've been drooling for.

      Random thoughts:
1.) Wow, Cisco finally became a superhero.

2.) I bet Barry picked up a mental hitchhiker in the speed force.  "This house is bitchin'" could be the hitchhiker's opinion of Barry's body.

3.) BITCH IN CHARGE isn't a good look for Iris.

4.) I find it funny that the ONE episode where Barry is finally ACCURATE about being the fastest man alive (not Savitar, not Wally, not Zoom, not Thawne) is also one of the few episodes where he doesn't open the show by making that boast.

5.) So the immortal "Speed Force alien" couldn't find a way to "balance" herself, but a mere human could figure it out in a few months.  Also, did Cisco say that his solution was to "trick" the Speed Force alien?  Doesn't that imply that she didn't really need Barry?  Barry better make a concentrated effort to stay out of the speed force from now on.  Otherwise, he'll probably get an interesting reception the next time he tries to reset time.

6.) Cisco used to work with the CCPD.  Is it even possible that they don't know he's Vibe.  Cisco's look IS pretty fucking unmistakable, after all.

7.) I'll laugh heartily if Barry is instantly given his job back after apparently having a MAJOR psychotic break.  After that, I wonder how Joe will cover his ass.  "Uh….he was jerked around by the airline on his way back home from his sabbatical, so he rented a car, drove to the middle of nowhere, stripped naked, and attacked a pick-up.

8.) The people in the pick-up saw Barry running at super speed and then saw his body crackling with electricity.  Do you think they included all that in their police report?  In their insurance claim?

9.) EXACTLY what did Wells bequeath to Barry?  We know he got the Aircraft Hanger of Justice, and we suspect he got enough money to pay for a "bitchin'" apartment, but the writers are still being needlessly coy about Barry's assets.  And since Iris never married Barry, how does she have access to that money in order to make the rent?

10.) HOW THE HELL DOES "TEAM KID-FLASH/VIBE" MAKE A LIVING???  Are they working on military contracts during commercial breaks?  Is their income coming from H.R.'s S.T.A.R. Labs Museum?  Whatever they do must pay a lot if they can lure Iris away from her reporter job and hire her as….um......boss(y)??

    • RE: Gotham: Anyone watching? Season 4 starts tonight and I'd love to talk about it

I'm part of a Gotham community on Reddit and a few on YouTube and you're the first and only person I've heard criticize the auction scene which everyone has, literally, said was the best part of the show so far. I agree. I laughed – I loved it.

I should've been more specific.  I only hated the opening part where he was making a complete ass of himself with regards to the painting, followed by his excruciating greeting to the Penguin and the painful dialog that follows.  After Barbara shows up, however, everything instantly gets better, and it does indeed become the best part of the show.  Bruce's catty remark to Barbara (….for someone like YOU!) was delicious, and I delighted in the wonderfully dramatic way that Oswald ran to the podium and completely fucked up Barbara's plans.  SUCH a nasty, vicious queen thing to do, brilliantly depicted by a homosexual actor portraying a homosexual character.

As to Bruce's body, what are you expecting?

I'd post pictures of some 16 year-old bodybuilders, but I think I'd get banned.

What do you think they're going to do with Riddler? I was a little disappointed they killed his fan.

The Riddler's cunning intellect is his best feature.  Without it, he's…....well, let me put it this way: "What is nowhere, but everywhere, except where something else is?"  They need to fix him, FAST!

Oh, and you're right about Jim. Less Jim, please

Hi.  I know I killed your son and all, but I really need yet another favor from you?!?  If they're going to give Jim balls that big, they should at least allow us to see them.

    • RE: Gotham: Anyone watching? Season 4 starts tonight and I'd love to talk about it

I think this might be my favorite season, and I have no problem figuring out why:  Jim Gordon and the GCPD are taking a back seat to Bruce Wayne's ascension.

I loved that Bruce started learning about acting and disguises.  That being said, "Bruce the Brat" at Penguin's auction was absolutely cringe-worthy.  I had to pause repeatedly so that I could take some time to shiver uncomfortably.

I was terribly amused by Bruce's "LET HIM!! in response to Alfred's concern that Ra's would come for the knife.  Considering the utterly laughable security at Wayne Manor, and how EVERYONE waltzes in and takes whatever they want, Bruce might want to use some of that auction money to bid on a fuckin' clue!  And since no intruder leaves without beating the shit out of Alfred first, Alfred should've gone to that auction with some copies of his résumé.  Oops, I meant to say: Copies of his CV.  🙂

I thought he'd gotten much more fit in the three-month break. You have to cut him a bit of slack because he's still growing, but he cut a fine silhouette.

Sorry, but I spent the entire episode staring intently at that kid's body :pope:  (mind out of the gutter, people) and I honestly don't think he's putting any effort into looking the part.  Just my opinion.  I'll change it whenever Bruce's head doesn't look too large for his frame.  I don't mean to sound cruel.  David certainly looks a hell of a lot better than I do.  But the difference is: I'm not accepting money to portray Batman.

    • RE: Post the last movie you've seen and how you rate it

I was incredibly bored, so I decided to try to clear out a few movies from my Netflix queue.  I watched The Veil(2016), a horror movie that seemed smart.  It wasn't.  I kept wanting to turn it off, but I thought it would get better.  After all, it had a tiny bit of star power (Lily Rabe, Thomas Jane, and Jessica Alba), so it couldn't be THAT bad, could it???  So I forced myself to overcome my miniscule attention span and watch it to the very end.

      Fuck, I wasn't I hadn't.

By the end of the film, I began to massively reconsider how I make use of time.  It was a total life moment.  Then I started going through all the movies on my queue, reading descriptions and watching trailers, just to weed out some of the more obvious shit.  Then, in spite of my desperate need to work on my attention span, I instituted a policy of ALWAYS pausing the film after fifteen minutes in order to determine if I should continue.

    • RE: The Orville

The Orville is truer to 1960's Star Trek than Discovery

I watched the first episode.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  It wasn't a laugh riot, but to be honest, I found myself not wanting it to be.  I actually (strangely) found myself wishing they'd played it a bit more straight, or at least made the confrontation with the Krill a bit more serious and tense.

Also, I found the visuals of "The Orville" to be a lot more….uh... comfortable(?) than "Discovery".  I know that "Discovery" is going for a darker tone, but I just can't stand the sets.  Even the sets on DS9 seemed more cozy and less oppressive than the ones on "Discovery".  I don't know what it is, but something about "Discovery" really pisses off my subconscious mind for some reason.

...but back to "The Orville".  I'll continue to watch it, but as soon as I feel that they've warped over top of the cosmic space shark, I'm out.

      Final thoughts:

      • My husband and I thought that Isaac was being voiced by Brent Spiner.  Was anyone else fooled?

      • We loved Justin (the holographic ogre).  We'll be very disappointed if he doesn't come back.  I'm hoping he either gets a mobile emitter, or they feature him heavily in holodeck based episodes, a la Dixon Hill, Moriarty, Leonardo Da Vinci, the Ancient West, etc.

I'm on the fence about watching this.  I've heard lots of negative stuff, but there are some people who say the criticism is overblown.

Personally, I want Adrianne Pilicki back on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., playing Mockingbird and hitting people with her battle staves™.

Should I be watching the Orville?  Is it good?  Seth MacFarlane tends to grate on me a bit.  The clip about "conquering the banana" made me cringe and scream: "Stop stretching it out!!!  It isn't funny!!"

I'm laughing my ass off at how Alfred is somehow okay with all of this.  Shitty guardian of the MILLENNIUM!  But I'm so happy that they're actually finally "Smallville"-ing Bruce that I don't care.  Still, I don't see how Alfred's sporadic training and a couple days (weeks?) of forced League of Shadows training could possibly make him ready for such a huge step.

….and why isn't David Mazouz lifting weights yet??  Seriously!  It should've been put in his contract or something.  If you're gonna accept the role of Young Bruce Wayne, you'd better be prepared to eventually start working out!  I mean, I'm having trouble conjuring up enough verisimilitude to handle the idea of "Li'l Brucey" kickin' some ass.  Stephen Amell needs to have a SERIOUS discussion with that kid.

Sorry, but I've been out of comics for so long that I am sorely unqualified to discuss the present state of childishness in Marvel vs. DC.

In my day, the level of maturity of a story depended on whoever was writing the book, not the company that put it out.

As far as the movies are concerned, I don't share your optimism about DC.  I really liked Wonder Woman, and I sorta liked Man of Steel, but the others….not so much.  I especially hated Superman vs. Batman.  I'd been waiting for a live-action Batman/Superman meet-up for DECADES, and when I finally got it, it was utter garbage.  Zack Snyder and his bleak, colorless film style need to get the hell away from my childhood fantasies!  I'm glad he's off Justice League, but I'm not too sure that the man who gave us Avengers: Age of Ultron will do much better.

      We'll see.

I'm hopeful, but I'm concerned that the Punisher show, just like the Punisher movies, will quickly turn into a mindless shoot'em-up.

What I'd like to see:  Frank has to use his raw cunning, his military training, and a FUCK LOAD of artillery to take down an organized crime boss…. AND HIS TEAM OF SUPER-POWERED ASSASSINS/BODYGUARDS!!!!!!

What I'll get:  A hackneyed 80's-style revenge flick.  "Commando" without the jokes, ....but with a cool skull t-shirt.

I'm pessimistic, to be honest.  To me, the reason that THIS Punisher was so awesome was because he interacted with/argued with/and FOUGHT WITH both Daredevil and the Kingpin.  Those scenes were fucking GOLD!!!!!!  Now Frank will be on his own.  No Daredevil, no Kingpin, and as far as I've seen thus far, no one with powers.  We've already seen this done in the movies.

      VERY pessimistic.

    • RE: Netflix The Defenders

I'm a DC comic book reader. Nice to meet you.  Grin

Although I mainly gravitated to the Marvel books, I did read a lot of DC as well.  (As proof, I had one of my letters printed in an issue of Captain Carrot and I sent in a (unused) character design for "Dial H For Hero").  My favorite comics were Batman/Detective Comics, Captain Carrot, Teen Titans, Blue Devil, and the Will Payton version of Starman.

what you would have thought had they not done the Danny Rand Ironfist instead going for either a brand new Ironfist or pulling up one of the older or lesser known Ironfists?

My comic reading days are done.  I keep trying to get back into it, but the magic is gone.  Thus, I never read any Iron Fist past "Heroes For Hire".  Therefore, I prefer the Danny Rand version of Iron Fist that I knew from back then.  I just wish they'd done him RIGHT!

      [Speaking of Madam Gao…]

I agree with everything you said.  I want to add, however, that I loved Madame Gao during Daredevil S1.  She was so casually heartless, filled with helpful, but cruel observations about everyone.  Loved it.  And just when I thought I couldn't love her any more, she goes and hits Daredevil so hard that he flew across the room!  When I saw that, I jumped up and screamed "OHMYGOD!  She's from K'un Lun!!!!!!"
…..so of course the Iron Fist show comes along and makes her seem weak and powerless, and the Defenders comes along and makes her POINTLESS!!!

LC's father was a preacher. No character has ever mentioned the revelation about life existing off our planet and the writers had a perfect reason for crime to take off in a new nhilistic direction, i.e. god must not exist therefore anything I do is okay.

A good plot idea, but they'd never do it.  Think about how the Marvel movies and shows bend over backwards to avoid offending the masses. I doubt they'd offend Christians by questioning the existence of God, because they don't even have the guts to offend them by having even one gay man (except barely ever seen Joey from A.O.S., spiritual brother of Matt from Melrose Place).  In addition, Jessica doesn't smoke or say her trademark: "Fuck!",  Luke Cage went from an angry black man to a big 'ole softy whose racial views are summed up as "It's complicated", the Ancient One is white, and the Purple Man's sickening, ever-increasing appetite for murder and all forms of sexual depravity was dropped in favor of making him…..what?  Audience friendly?  Oh well, at least no one was offended enough to drop their Netflix account.  Bored, but not offended.

Yeesh!  For someone who keeps saying they could go on and on, this thread sure is making me go on and on.

      @aadam101:

I really liked Iron Fist.  I don't understand all the hate for it.

They could've given us the costume, but they didn't.
They could've given us some really cool training flashbacks, like in "Kung Fu", but they didn't.
They could've shown Danny's fight with the dragon, but they wanted to save money, so they didn't.
They could've given Danny a fascinating personality, shaped by eastern philosophies, but instead they just had him act like an unthinking,  impetuous brat.
They could've shaved off several episodes, but instead decided to stretch it out endlessly, like they did with Luke Cage and Jessica Jones (I'll murder Killgrave….no I won't.....yes I will....no, it isn't right......yes I will.....no, I'll try to reform him.....no, I can't reform him......maybe his parents can help.....no, they only made things worse.......I FINALLY FUCKING KILLED HIM!!!!!  If there's a moral to season 1 of Jessica Jones,
I'm totally clueless.  Sorry, I digress.

I wish I had the ability to ignore the faults of JJ, LC, and IF, but I can't.  I've been reading comics since '75, and as a result, I had high expectations that were only met by DD 1 & 2.  Those are masterpieces!  Sure, I wish they'd hired a few parkour masters and stuck them in the suit and spent more time showing Daredevil flipping around the rooftops.  But except for minor gripes, I can't complain.  The others, however, I could complain about for days.

I envy your ability to like Iron Fist, I really do.

    • RE: Netflix The Defenders

I re-watched Daredevil season 2 just before the Defenders was released, which turned out to be a grave mistake because it shined a huge fucking spotlight on just how shitty the Defenders was.  I was hoping that Daredevil would lift up the other characters, but instead he was dragged down to their level.

-When I watched "Wonder Woman" as a child, I remember thinking how laughable it was that Wonder Woman could stop a tank (shown in the opening credits) with her bare hands, but frequently showed strain while fighting ordinary men.  Now, decades later, we have Kristen Ritter struggling against ordinary men, but able to support a freight elevator by a steel cable.  And speaking of steel cables, shouldn't that describe the muscle density of the arms of someone able to pull off that stunt?  And yet a handgun easily shot a bullet straight through Jessica's arm in the first season of her show.  DEFINE THE WOMAN'S POWER!

-Speaking of defining women's powers, what the fuck is going on with Elektra?  Does she have super strength and speed now, or was that just how it seemed to a fighter as pathetic as Danny?  And how can Elektra jump out of high windows and survive being hit by a car?  FUCKING TELL US, YOU SHITTY DAREDEVIL FOLLOW-UP!!!!!

-During the first Captain America film, the first season of Jessica Jones, and the first season of Luke Cage, we are shown shitty, slapped together versions of the costumes they wear in the comics.  And in the first X-Men film, Cyclops even takes a moment to mock Wolverine's comic costume ("What would YOU prefer…..yellow spandex?").  You know what?  I'm getting really fucking sick and tired of Hollywood telling me what to think.  How about giving us what we want, instead of trying to condition us into accepting your watered-down, barely recognizable, street-clothes wearing versions of the characters we want to see.  I mean, it's a really good thing that Danny constantly tells us he's Iron Fist.  Otherwise, who would know?  Give him the damn costume!

-When Stick said: "Now it's a party", I wanted to kill myself.  Whose shtick felt more overused and cringe-worthy, Stick's or Jessica's?

I could go on and on, but I'll just summarize by saying that I expected the Defenders to wash away the disappointment I felt with the non-Daredevil shows.  It didn't.  I'll still watch them when they come out, but I'll no longer look forward to them.
