I've gone through the same thing, and I agree it can be a living hell. I'm afraid theres nothing you can do. You might want something more, but if you try and fail, I can't ensure the outcome. I've lost a very dear friend in the past over merely the fact that I had feelings for him. I told him I wanted nothing more, and merely wanted to be honest with him, but he still was never comfortable around me again. Do not risk what you have now over something so meaningless.

I second the shower. Things coming off you are likely just as bad as the things coming out of you. I would, however, reserve this opinion for number 1 only.

It's a very tough call. Africa is a sinkhole when it comes to internal affairs, and as heartless as it may sound, America needs to get it's own shit together on the subject before we should involve ourselves with anymore international issues than we already have. Hopefully as more nations move towards a sense of genuine tolerance, rather than forced political correctness, these sorts of issues will be weeded out by example.
