Specific user settings for uTorrent 3.5.5
-
My nephew visited recently, and offered to "tune up" my uTorrent client by tweaking some of the preferences. Everything still works, but it seems that I'm not uploading as much as I used to, and I wonder if maybe something went wrong. Here's are a couple of preference screens that he fiddled with:
Do these settings look right? I consider myself computer-literate, but the subtleties of torrent software often escape me. If it matters, the internet connection at this house seems pretty good, 500 Mb/sec down, 25 Mb/sec up.
Thanks!

@eobox91103 ...
By default max connection is 250/50/4 ...
aside from that you can allow legay connection and port forward if you are having issues finding peers ...
allowing too many connections may affect bandwidth transfer ... -
@eobox91103 After looking things over, I do not think the problem is with your uTorrent settings. The issue is that there are next to no leechers actively downloading any of the torrents that you are seeding. I can see what I can do to help with this, but the lack of leechers alone will have a lot to do with your issue.
Also, for our tracker, you need to make sure that the port that your torrent client uses is forwarded through your home router to your computer, both in TCP and UDP for things to work properly.

@john32123666 : Thanks for the response. I gather the graphics you posted are from your own client. The only difference I see is that you have two boxes enabling DHT ticked, whereas I don't. I thought I saw some posts on here that DHT was a "bad thing," but I can easily change this.
@MrMazda : I see that several of my older "nobody's leeching" torrents have been freeleeched (I wonder who did that? ) and my client & modem are now maxed out seeding them. (Several are now fully seeded with a dozen or more other seeders, so I've paused those in order to put maximum bandwidth on a few of the very large torrents.)
So it seems that my settings and such are OK, and it was simply a matter of having no leechers on many of my torrents. There's some older stuff that I've kept live because I think it's of value and I wanted it to be available to people. I'm not concerned about ratio (I'm doing OK with that); I just wanted to be a good sharer.

@eobox91103 I did... It's a great way to revive dying torrents, and many of the torrents you are seeding were dying and had no leechers. This is where the sudden increase in traffic came from.
As a side note, it may be worth putting a limit (throttle) on your upload speed in uTorrent. The reason for this is that in order to browse websites or really do much of anything online, you need to have at least a certain amount of upload ability available. When the connection is fully maxed out, it can create difficulties with other devices trying to use the internet normally.
If your internet speed caps out at about 25 mbit (3,051.75 KB), I would recommend capping your upload speed at about 2,450 KB/s. This will ensure that other devices on your home network have a sufficient upload capacity to be able to work on the internet without causing issues. It's a bit of a reduction, however if you have more than one device on the network, it will ensure that all devices will be able to function consistently on your network over the internet.
Just for reference, the speed calculations can be derived as follows:
1 bit = 1 bit
1 kbit = 1000 bits
1 mbit = 1000 kbits = 1,000,000 bits
1 Byte = 8 bits
1 KByte = 1024 Bytes
1 MByte = 1024 KBytes
1 GByte = 1024 MBytesSo the formula would work as follows
25 mbit x (1,000,000 bits/mbit) = 25,000,000 bits
25,000,000 bits / (8 bits/Byte) = 3,125,000 Bytes
3,125,000 Bytes / (1024 Bytes/KByte) = 3,051.75 KBytes -
@MrMazda Thanks for the tip. I did notice that some other things were slowing down. I'll throttle uTorrent accordingly.

@eobox91103 ...
Torrenting eats a lot of memory or a memory hog while downloading and not much on [upload],
it slows your device performance while multi-tasking ...
Your best option is to reduce your download/[upload] through right clicking -
Bandwidth Allocation - Set Download/Upload limit or > Preferences - Bandwidth download/upload limit rate and select the best option for your bandwidth speed ...
Save @least 25% of your bandwidth to perform a good PC performance ...
[These applies if you have a high speed bandwidth] ... -
These are the settings I use... which were given to me by probably the all-time wizard of Utorrent.
Also... the final version of 3.5.5 which is build 46606 is probably the best. I do not trust any of their 3.6.x versions.

@lololulu19 It is with good reason you shouldn't trust 3.6.0... It has compatibility issues with many sites and trackers, including ours. For this reason, we do no recommend updating it to anything newer than any of the builds of 3.5.5.
